Our organization makes free software, and recently 'Product X' was reviewed and given the 'Editor's Choice' award by PC Magazine.
Seeing this, I placed their magazine logo linking back to the review on our download page, alongside the badges of other download awards we've been given in the past.
I was contacted barely 24 hours later by Ziff Davis Media legal, and told that my use of the logo was not Fair Use and I had to license their editor's choice award logo for $1250 per year.
I'm no lawyer, but I honestly feel that this is fair use? I'm using their logo to link back to their site - does anyone know if this is not allowed?
BTW, the PC Magazine review used our product, screenshots of our product, and more without letting us know they were doing a review let alone asking for our permission. Can someone explain the logic in this to me? And on their site, they have the screenshot of Product X alongside the 'PC Magazine Editor's Choice' logo.

If I recall, USB-IF is pretty hostile to small players distributing only a few products like open sourced projects.
I wonder if there has been any progress in this matter. If not... then has there been any efforts to at least hijack a VID space from a dead company, and coordinate the distribution of the PID numbers for open sourced projects.
On dealing with the USB markings, is it possible to perhaps design a logo that is different enough from the logo USB, but is distinct enough to not be a legal concern?
If so, then we should call this logo "Open Serial Bus", maybe the shape of the logo could be a silhouette of a usb plug, but superimposed over the open hardware lock&gears.

While we are at it, might be also nice to provide a consistent method for non-standard signals to interface with such "Open Serial Bus" devices. E.g. I saw some phone re-purposed the micro usb connectors to enable or output TTL serial pin outs in place of D+ & D- with a special signal to the ID pin. Sounds very useful. (In that particular case, perhaps a one wire eeprom with baud rate settings might be helpful on the ID pin)

Btw "Open Serial Bus" does not mean USB. It is OSB. Especially since such org cannot provide guarantees that USB-IF wouldn't do anything to cause trouble (e.g. reissuing a revoked VID/PID pair). And trademark wise, it is OSB, not USB, and thus is not likely to be confused by consumers (Especially if the logo is kept distinct).
You should also have a strict admittance system to ensure only open source projects are included (at the very least to reduce the incentive for USB-IF to take additional offensive measures).
There is precedence for this however. If you recall about i2c, other companies decide to call compatible implementations as TWI (two wire interface) to avoid paying licencing fees.
USB-IF will not be losing money from this however, since if you are making a normal commercial product (with sizable number of items to sell), you ought to fork up the fee to USB-IF to ensure your product is kosher anyway.
tl;dr: Open, but not Universal. But better than the alternative of forking up $5k for a small open source product..

We want to make buying and selling software a better experience. We do this by allowing sellers and marketers to combine all sorts of content—slides, videos, forms, calendars, text—into one sharable webpage, which they can then easily personalize for specific prospects. Think of it like a website that is specifically designed for a specific individual to take a specific action, which answers any questions or objections they may have.

To customize it, I simply added the YC logo at the top, and a "Welcome HN" video to intro the demo—but you can customize these things as much as you like, as your sales process moves forward.

Of course it's not really restricted, because we want you all to see it, but it's an example of how you can evolve these demos in response to specific people's questions.
Back in 2012 I launched a B2B email marketing startup called Userfox on Hacker News (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4715237), and as that company grew I repeatedly found that it was really hard to create an email that performed well—because if an email is too long users will skim over it, and if it has more than one link they’ll never come back to click them all. Our hope is that Journey helps fix such interactions by allowing you to send users a specific page that has all the content you want them to read, including answers to their specific questions about your product.
Sales people have a hard job, and we don’t think their tools help them enough—they have to rely on live meetings and phone calls. Which is annoying because a live phone call is pretty much the last thing I want to do when I want to actually use a product. You have to talk to a sales person because there isn’t a good way to communicate complexity today in an asynchronous manner.
Sales and marketing is actually ‘just’ storytelling. You build something and then you tell people why they want it. We often think that the latter part is the easy part—but it isn’t! It’s really hard to introduce your product to someone, even when you know they would benefit from it.
If Journey can provide a superior storytelling experience it stands to reason that humans will require fewer live meetings. You don’t need to telephone for a taxi because you have the Uber app.... You won’t need to talk to a human to buy software because you’ll have Journey…
Journey specifically is a web app where you can embed and sequence various pieces of content (videos, slides, forms, calendars, …) and then share that sequence (a “Journey”). You can then take a Journey and personalize it for a specific recipient. Once you’ve shared a Journey, you get insights on where they’re spending time, and any comments they may have. Over time, you and your prospect can build up an entire sales conversation this way, focused around what they specifically need from your product. And you can reuse any bits that worked particularly well in your future conversations with other prospects.

,Ask HN: How should I organize my portfolio? What should even be in it?Growing up as a Generation Y, I fell in love with computers at a very early age. Since then, I have accumulated tons and tons of work (personal and for work). These range from running PPC campaigns, social media marketing consultant for hundred-million dollar company, logos/print design, and even a game-hack that I wrote 10 years ago for SC:BW. I was an odd child.
However -- About 75% of them are just simple (but professional) websites that I have made as a freelancer over the more recent years.
1) What would you include in the public portfolio?
I feel that potential clients / employers may like to see that I try to be well-rounded and always curious to try new things. But I'm not sure how others would think about my SC:BW hack called "BagFullOfSh!t" (can't make this up, you can Google "BagFullOfSh!t ghoztcraft" if you're curious lol). Sure, it was 10 years ago when I was 12, but does it deserve a spot -- on my professional portfolio?!
2) How would you organize your portfolio?
I was thinking of putting them into categories, such as "Logo Design," "Website Development", "Social Media Marketing", etc. But a lot of them overlap with eachother. I could also organize it by client instead of project -- but I've worked with some clients more than others. I'd love to hear your input/suggestions/inspiration.
3) What can you include in your portfolio, morally and legally?
For example: I've had the wonderful opportunity to do some social marketing work for the LA Dodgers (just a small project; custom app on Facebook). However, there was a middle-man advertising agency that reached out to me. Morally, I feel that I can post this project in my portfolio, since I did do 100% of the actual work. Legally, however, could it have repercussions on me?

This morning I read the post "The Rust Performance Book (2020)" and when I wanted to upvote it 10 hours later I had to go to page #4 (ranked currently #108 with 184 votes "20 hours ago") => finding it on page #4 was weird for me (I would have never found that precious post if I would have checked HN only this evening).
The usual reply to my kind of question is "click on 'past' to see a kind-of-better ranking" but after having done that exactly >now< I see for example:
- at position #41 "Logo and Learning (2015)" (63 points, 3 days ago, 26 comments) and...
- at position #42 "America’s favorite family outings are increasingly out of reach" ( 270 points, 1 day ago, 569 comments) - btw. I read this and for me it wasn't great but still interesting, so in the end I liked it, at least 10000 times more than "logo and learning" (which I glanced over).
I don't like the current ranking :(.
,Ask YC: what is the future for browser extensions that personalize the web?i'm in a position where i can launch personalization on 30,000 browsers. but i havent - because i'm not sure what the equation with websites, my monetization options, and my users could be.
so i thought i'd ask the community, with the example of a few cases & existing scenarios:
[1] GetGlue provides a check-in mechanism for pages you visit. They basically augment the website with toolbars,links, 'like' buttons, badges & so on & even referral links to 3rd parties
[2] webmynd adds personalization to google
[3] rapportive adds links,and even third party raplets into gmail
Conduit[4] has a toolbar, that triggers personalization within webapges and is in the top 100 websites visited in the world today
my question :
1. will they alienate themselves from content destinations ( their 'hosts' )
2. will they be able to sell advertising on a space owned by the host
here in india, a comparable scenario would be when popular dailies occasionally had a pamphlet that the delivery boy would fill and make some money out of. but guess what. the newspaper sued the advertiser - not the 'enabler'.
that said, there are content/personalization cases where the line is more blurry and tilting towards what the user decides to do.
eg: skype extension[5] that takes numbers on a page and turns them into 'call via skype' buttons.
or more recently google's highlight extension [6] that let's you double click/select random phrases on any page, and it displays a google logo with a search button right there. does this account for monetizing 3rd party content? essentially users of this plugin could be on a yahoo or bing page, select a word and a google search would show up. it's kind of a tricky case of accountability IMHO.
if my users want a site personalized, does that justify my plugin personalizing content/websites?
Or perhaps Cooliris [7] & Facebook's [8] form of bizdev driven personalizaton offer a half way path. I think wibiya [9] has reached great scale and are in a position to offer a non-extension,publisher-controlled personalization experience.
