Unsurprisingly, my finished applications never look quite right. I use bootstrap which helps a lot.
I think the problem is mostly with the layout of elements on the page. I try not to overdo things with unnecessary elements, and am at a point where each individual piece of the webpage (e.g. a button, a logo, a navbar, a form) looks fine on its own, but doesn't look professional as a whole (for reasons I'm not yet perceptive enough to detect - I can tell it's clunky but I can't articulate why).
I know 30 minutes is ambitious, but I'm working on an MVP and don't have a lot of time right now (in the future, absolutely).
Any recommendations for crash courses, videos, articles, or tutorials greatly appreciated! Particularly interested to hear from anyone who wasn't a design 'natural', and had to self teach as I am..
,Can anyone clear Google cookies from Chrome?I notice today it's impossible to clear google cookies. I had several tabs open, including one to gmail and one to calendar, and I have "Do Not Track" set to "yes".
Then, I clear cookies and close my browser.
Then, I open my browser (it re-loads all my tabs automatically).
As soon as possible, I again clear my cookies.
Finally, when I load the google home page, it still has my account showing in the top corner (my logo, my name, and my email).
My guess is google have some JS which detects cookie loss, and immediately reconstitutes the lost cookies - so all my "clear" requests are being surreptitiously violated...
Does anyone know how to tell chrome to actually get rid of google cookies? Even the "new tab" window contacts google and sets more cookies every time!.
,Ask HN: Should I trademark the name of my startup?I kept wondering if trademarking the name/logo of my startup is worth it.
* If so, when is the best time to do it, before or after launch?
* Should I hire a lawyer to do it, or is it simple enough that even I can do it? (I'm a software engineer with no legal background)
* What are some of the caveats of the trademark process?
Thanks!.
,Ask HN: What's with the giant & clunky web designs?Today Freshbooks began testing, with its paying customers, an 'updated' look:
http://www.freshbooks.com/blog/2011/12/14/new-redesigned-header-emails-and-login-screen/
The feedback has been mostly negative (189 comments as of now).
The most visible difference is the new header area (logo, primary nav, secondary nav), which, among other changes, has been stretched vertically, occupying more pixels and pushing down the important stuff (you know, the actual content).
I've seen this over and over again with recent web designs: enormous fonts, images, excessive white space, etc.
My theory is that the folks designing this stuff have massive hi-res Apple Cinema displays, which make the designs look reasonable to them (I've seen this firsthand a few times).
Any ideas what's going on here?
Is there a practical basis for these (what I perceive as giant and clunky) designs?.
,Ask HN: Importance of trademarking early onLast week I put my first splash page up online with a notification signup form for people interested in when I launch my startup... Immediately a friend (who happens to be a patent lawyer), criticized me about not having trademarked my name/logo saying that someone could theoretically go trademark my name now and steal my brand. I believe this is highly unlikely, but it got me thinking at least about trademarking. Does anyone with experience in this area have advice? Should I throw my money at getting a trademark or is it really not that big of a deal right now?.
,A Startup’s Most Valuable Asset: The TeamStartup ventures are exciting, dynamic, and risky. They require a balance between luck, skill, and timing. Of all the essential elements regarding startup businesses, there is one particular element that remains paramount: the team members.
For many “financially-deficient” (aka bootstrapped) startups, choosing the correct team members/founders may be the most important decision the young company faces. Despite this truth, it is all too common for startups to constuct their team with insufficient or unsuitable candidates. This type of behavior is not just harmful, it’s potentially deadly for a young upstart business.
I see many startups invest most of their focus on things like: marketing strategies, business name / logo, and market position — before ever really considering the composition of their startup members. The fundamental problem with this is simple: idea and strategies mean nothing with the wrong people in the driver seat. It is critical to place the correct individuals in the correct positions in order to achieve maximum efficiency. This becomes difficult as a startup begins developing ideas and executing particular strategies.
Here are a few aspects to consider when constructing your startup’s fouding team.
Is your friend the “right” choice? Friends are the easiest and most convenient individuals to bring aboard your startup venture. Friendly conversation does not necessarily translate into smart business tactics, however. Your friend may be a great person to bounce ideas off of, but not the right business partner. Take advantage of your friend status and mentally project them into a startup role. From all that you know about that person, think about a few scenarios:
* how well do they handle stressful situations?
* do they possess perseverance or do they stop at the first sign of hardship?
* are they trustworthy?
* how well do they communicate?
* how do they handle uncertainty or chaotic situations?
* what is their level of dedication or passion towards projects?
No money, no problem. Lack of cash is often considered a major startup obstacle. And while this may be true in most circumstances, it does provide an indirect benefit in the case of bringing aboard team members. Startups with little to no working capital are fueled by one thing: passion. Bringing aboard individuals with no promise of monetary compensation ensures that they are in it for all the right reasons. You can worry about salary and payroll after you ship your first unit.
Previous entrepreneurs welcome. There are certain intangibles one learns from operating inside the trenches of a startup company that cannot be learned anywhere else. This is why you should always look to bring aboard previous entrepreneurs given the chance. The company benefits greatly from the individuals’ prior startup experience and you gain a trusted business partner who understands the difficulty associated with launching a business venture.
The most important point to remember is this: your startup’s most valuable asset is its team members…so choose your partners wisely! Remember that at the end of the day, you and your team are the ones putting the ideas and strategies in place. It’s not enough to have an idea, you need the physical manpower to execute them effectively. A founding team needs to have the right balance of intelligence, innovation, and drive. In order to achieve the correct balance, your team members must share a common passion while working towards shared goals.
trueventures-teammembersI saw a great affirmation of this belief when I came across a particular venture capital firm’s website, and noticed their portfolio companies. True Ventures, an early stage tech venture firm, showcases their portfolio companies in a refreshing way. If you notice, all of their investments are accompanied with a picture of the founding team. Although it is just a picture, it establishes the old investment addage of: “We invest in individuals, not companies.” This is something that we as entrepreneurs hear, but sometimes overlook..
,Startup advice: When to hire professional branding/logo designWe're building an eHealth startup marketing to individuals. The team is three engineers/scientists, so we have great tech-- and limited graphic design or marketing skill.
We're getting ready to push out a beta version, and realize that our corporate image is terrible. We need a name, logo, color theme, etc.
Minimum price from decent brand agencies seems to be around 1,500.
99Designs/Upwork can give us something for a few hundred, but it isn't the full package, which means inconsistencies and lower quality.
How would you frame the question?.
