[Music], hey what's up it's me ben i'm back with, another video on how i make an led sign, today i'm going to show you how i made, that bride to be sign so a lot of people, still ask me about my original sign the, wild one if it still worked there it is, it works fine never had any problem with, it um, left it on for hours even when we had, the event so that was my first attempt, ever making it nah it came out pretty, good there was a couple of things that, would change a little different the main, thing is the back wiring some different, stuff today we're gonna try this one, it's all white lime but it should have, uh both the red and the white line, inside it's just covered in white uh so, i'm able to kind of put it in the back a, little easier same stuff we used last, time uh gorilla glue worked great hasn't, moved at all those clips, the same flex wiring so, and a razor blade all right let's get, started, i, [Music], it's a little windy but, here's my template, it's not perfect but it's a lot better, than trying to draw a freehand and this, is the plexiglass i'm using um, it is 18 inches by 24 inches and it is, point 22.220, clear, [Music], [Music], see, right there the black line that's where, you're going to cut if you cut in the, center there'll be nothing to attach to, those little um the corners that you, need to attach to right at the black, line so anywhere you cut you have to, measure it out and cut exactly on that, black line boom, [Music], you see those two dots right there those, are what you're going to connect to, these are those clips, i don't know if you see it there's two, metal, clips in there, that's what's gonna touch, that's what you're gonna make sure, these two clips, i'm gonna touch on the two clips here, and the the two um the little copper and, the little metal pieces in here as long, as they touch that's all light up so if, you're putting this together and it's, not following through it's because, you're not getting a good connection, between these things or the wire but i, don't know how much you can see in there, those two middle clips have to touch, this, you're just gonna make sure, those clips line up with here, and then you just close it and then, we're just going to cut off the excess, this is wire, [Music], should have two in there it's just, covered in white, slice it with the, knife, pull this back, you don't need to trim these, there we go and so amazon actually, screwed up and sent me the wrong one, it's supposed to have two holes and they, set in but this one has three uh it's a, little tighter fit uh let me just see if, it works if it works it works because, i'm already started, do the same thing to this side, uh if you see this, they have three holes they're supposed, to have two like the one i built last, time, but let's see if we can get it to work, pushing those in, make sure they're going as far as they, can close it, clip it and use this white one just to, see if it works hit the sides you're, gonna make sure those little copper, things or whatever are gonna match and, touch the metal in here, peel back both sides, push that in, and close it, a moment of truth, no light, so what that either means those clips, don't work or i have them in reverse the, positive negative let's switch it out, see what happens, all right so you know what that means, i had the ones reversed, so you know how these are color, coordinated i just had them reversed, these are the three three holes, this is the original one that i had up, from the other video it has two holes so, these are the better ones amazon screwed, up and sent me these but, uh it still works so definitely look for, the ones with the two holes it just, makes things easier but before you try, and connect them all and start, gluing them down always double check, each one to make sure they're working, before you do any gluing, [Music], i, [Music], oh, [Music], [Music], oh, [Music], is, [Music], [Music], [Music], oh, [Music], you
Anybody dealing with the VID/PID USB issue for small open source projects?Anyone dealing with the VID/PID issue for opensource projects?
E.g. Start a Open Serial Bus org perhaps to highjack some abandoned VID spaces?

If I recall, USB-IF is pretty hostile to small players distributing only a few products like open sourced projects.
I wonder if there has been any progress in this matter. If not... then has there been any efforts to at least hijack a VID space from a dead company, and coordinate the distribution of the PID numbers for open sourced projects.
On dealing with the USB markings, is it possible to perhaps design a logo that is different enough from the logo USB, but is distinct enough to not be a legal concern?
If so, then we should call this logo "Open Serial Bus", maybe the shape of the logo could be a silhouette of a usb plug, but superimposed over the open hardware lock&gears.

While we are at it, might be also nice to provide a consistent method for non-standard signals to interface with such "Open Serial Bus" devices. E.g. I saw some phone re-purposed the micro usb connectors to enable or output TTL serial pin outs in place of D+ & D- with a special signal to the ID pin. Sounds very useful. (In that particular case, perhaps a one wire eeprom with baud rate settings might be helpful on the ID pin)

Btw "Open Serial Bus" does not mean USB. It is OSB. Especially since such org cannot provide guarantees that USB-IF wouldn't do anything to cause trouble (e.g. reissuing a revoked VID/PID pair). And trademark wise, it is OSB, not USB, and thus is not likely to be confused by consumers (Especially if the logo is kept distinct).
You should also have a strict admittance system to ensure only open source projects are included (at the very least to reduce the incentive for USB-IF to take additional offensive measures).
There is precedence for this however. If you recall about i2c, other companies decide to call compatible implementations as TWI (two wire interface) to avoid paying licencing fees.
USB-IF will not be losing money from this however, since if you are making a normal commercial product (with sizable number of items to sell), you ought to fork up the fee to USB-IF to ensure your product is kosher anyway.
tl;dr: Open, but not Universal. But better than the alternative of forking up $5k for a small open source product..

I get 30% of adjusted gross advertising revenue.
'Initial term is one (1) year. Then, repeated one (1) year automatic renewals, unless Owner notifies [media agency] of non-
renewal in writing. [media agency] will have a 30-day exclusive right of first negotiation after any termination, expiration or non-
renewal. Owner will not have discussions or negotiations with any third party until 30 days of negotiation are complete.' That was initially 2 years but I got them to work it down.
I only get paid if my amount payable exceeds $1000.. which I think will take a long time.
I have to put their logo and slogan on my site.

,Ask HN: Launching a side-projectThis is a SaaS webapp targeting devops.
1. When to launch: too soon or too late?
Rather launch 'embarrassingly early' than later to benefit from early feedback. It has been used at my day job and does make some tasks faster and easier. I made basic changes so that it can run multi-tenant.
2. Pricing
Going to use an open-source core. The back-end and front-end will both be AGPL open-source from the start. Client access libraries to the API will be MIT licenced. The 'core' is that which is needed to run the app standalone in one's own environment, similar to what is run at my day job. Other non-core changes are infra-related e.g. supporting more scalable dbs.
Having the core open source also makes any service provider (including myself) use value-add-based pricing. I'm planning on $5, $29, $150 per month for Hobby, Startup, and Business tiers which have different limits and all with a free trial. Using a PayPal checkout button which seems to support the free trial bit.
3. Marketing
Being a side-project I'm not spending on marketing, just on operating the platform. The main places I hope to get traffic from are HN and Product Hunt. Also thought I'd give out some free accounts (can I call it Beta if I'm charging others?).
Other ideas are to write dev blog posts and possibly tech talks on software development with the related product plug. I don't have any significant online presence (Twitter etc).
Materials I have so far:
a. the webapp (static served from Netlify+CloudFlare)
b. single landing page
(unspalsh bg, screenshot, features, pricing and checkout)
c. API documentation
d. try it playground/sandbox
(like cURL requests in web forms)
