what's going on guys my name is dale, from creatorpro website in this video, i'm going to show you how to make a logo, for free in just five minutes by the end, of this video you'll be able to make, logos like this without any experience, necessary and there's no software needed, it's all done on your web browser and by, the way for any of my subscribers that, have been following along with us for, our move into the new space as you can, see we are still a work in progress this, is not the way the studio is going to, stay it's going to transform over the, next few videos so let's get started, step number one is to click on the very, first link in the description or you can, just go over to your web browser and, type in logo maker without the e.com, and then you can just go ahead and, cancel out of this little tutorial, so i'm going to show you how to use it, so first off a quick overview is that, you can search for any icon you want, just by clicking up here in this little, bar or you can add text and shapes over, here and change your colors over here, so now we can move on to step number two, which is to create an icon, so to do this just go up to the search, bar up here and you can type in anything, that you want now i'm going to be making, a logo for a fake men's grooming and, fashion website just to show you so what, you can do first is actually click on, this browse all logos button, and there's all different categories up, here like abstract shapes nature and so, on or you can just type in anything that, you want so for this, logo itself i'm going to be typing in, something like, bowtie, and then you've just got thousands and, thousands of different bow ties to, choose from and this is with any, category whatever it is that your, business is you're going to have almost, limitless options so i'm going to go, ahead and choose this one right here so, you just click on it and it will drop it, into your project and you can resize it, just by dragging on the corner and, pulling out, or going down, and you can move it around just by, clicking and dragging, now i'm going to make this a little bit, smaller, and we want to make this logo a bit more, unique so i'm going to go up and grab, another one so i'm just going to type in, let's say hair, and i'm just going to grab one of these, first ones right here like this one, and what i'm going to do is just move, this up, and i'm going to put text in between, right here so this is what i really, recommend doing is taking multiple icons, and combining them to make a more unique, logo if you don't like any of the ones, that come with logo maker, okay so now we can move on to step, number three which is to add your brand, name so to do this you can just go over, here and click on the little text button, and that's going to drop in some text, for you and i'm just going to type in, clean cut, that's going to be my new brand name, and you can just resize it by clicking, and dragging, or you can move it around so if you, click off, and then click back on you can drag it, around and you're going to get these, little guidelines that are going to let, you know when it's in the center and, it's going to snap, and if you don't like the stock blue, that it comes with you can just go ahead, and click on the text and then drag over, here in the color wheel all the way down, to black, now you can also change the font so if i, just go up here you've got a font, category and then a font family so the, font category you've got all different, types you could do fun and funky and get, some really crazy ones in here but to be, honest i like to stick with more simple, and modern looks they look a little bit, more professional but it's going to, depend on your brand so i'm going to go, ahead and click on simple and modern, and then i'm going to go over to the, font family and just select a new one, let's say this one, so now let's go ahead and make your, brand name a little bit more unique so, what i'm going to do is just click on, the text again, and i'm going to type in cut, by itself, and i'm just going to drag that out so, we can see it, and i'm going to make it black, and then i'm going to change the font, family to something a little bit more, bold let's say like this one, just like that and i'm going to delete, cut out of this one so i'm just going to, type clean, and then i'm just going to move it over, just a little bit, and put cut next to it, and then size it up, just like that, maybe resize this one a little bit, and there we go and now if you click and, drag a box you can drag them both around, at the same time, so i'm just going to make sure that, these are centered like that, maybe drag my hair down a little bit and, my bow tie up a little bit, and that is a pretty good looking logo, right there, and the reason i chose both of these, fonts is because cut being bold makes, the word clean look a lot more minimal, and clean, so now we can move on to step number, four which is to select your colors, so this can be done very simple so what, i'm going to do is just click on the, word cut and then go over to the color, wheel here and if you just click on this, little outside wheel you can change the, hue to anything that you want and then, you've got the saturation and lightness, in this box here so what i'm going to do, is select a blue color, maybe something like that, and then select kind of a dark, desaturated version of this blue, something like that, and that could be my company colors, right there and you can do this to the, text and the icons themselves, so now let's move on to step number five, which is to download your logo so to do, this you just go up to the little save, button up here at the top right and, click on that, and then you can see it's going to ask, you to buy this high resolution file for, 19 bucks but there is a button down here, that says no thanks download the low, resolution file and you just have to, credit logo maker you could put it, somewhere small on your website really, doesn't matter so you can go ahead and, click no thanks download the low, resolution file, and that is going to hit your downloads, right there, so now i'll just go to where that image, is in this case i just put it on my, desktop but you've got your image right, here and this is a png meaning that it's, going to have a transparent background, so you can put it on top of anything and, only the icon and the text are going to, show through, and one more quick tip is that if you, want to go back and edit your logo at, any time just go back to logo maker and, just copy this little url down here by, hitting this button right here and then, save it somewhere where you can access, it because if you type that into your, browser again you can go back at any, point and edit it, alright guys so that was how to create a, logo for free next if you'd like to, learn how to make a website just click, on this video right here or you can just, go up to your browser and type in, createaprowebsite.com, and you can learn there alright guys, thanks for watching and i will see you, on the next video

,Ask HN: Help Is it worth rebranding (trademark infringement)?I'm one of the Cofounders of a startup called Super Owl and we are busy working on an iPhone app which delivers spoken word content weekly to subscribers. We have recently been featured as part of a Next Web article about 'How Startups Choose their names' - http://thenextweb.com/insider/2011/12/03/9-startups-explain-how-they-chose-their-names/

This was a nice bit of early press for us and we were surprised but delighted to be approached. However, very soon after this article went out we received a letter from a company stating that we have 'breached their trademarks'. This company is another startup, yet to launch their app publicly, however they claim that they are an established business - see their first letter to us here - https://skitch.com/aishay/guy25/letter1

I e-mailed the following reply:

--------------------------

'Hi ,

I haven't heard of * before - just looked at your website and it looks like a great service.

I'm slightly confused about the letter attached as you state that Super Owl breaches your trademarks - have you registered a trademark for the name 'owl', '' or 'super owl'? Obviously, if it's the latter I can appreciate your concern.

First of all to clarify Super Owl is not a streaming service for audiobooks so it's quite different from what you're doing (we are aggregating spoken word audio podcasts for download). As yet, we also are not related to anything in the book space and our future plans don't include audiobooks.

Owls and audio are what we appear to have in common and I hope we can agree to differentiate ourselves in the market through product, logo, marketing, service etc. A quick search in the iTunes store reveals several apps with the word 'owl' included and I haven't seen this as a major setback or concern.

I hope this puts your mind at ease, however do feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss anything further. You can get in touch by e-mail or give me a call directly on *.

Best of luck on your launch.

Regards,

Aisha Yusaf'

--------------------------

I have now received the following letter as a reply to my e-mail - https://skitch.com/aishay/guy2a/letter2

So, here's my dilemma, do we change our name?... I don't feel like we are infringing any trademarks even though we do share the word 'owl' in both our business names. As we haven't even got a product out as yet we don't want to waste our time or money on legal fees or petty issues but rather concentrate on building, selling and promoting what we make.

The business that has been pursuing us on the trademark issue also doesn't have a product out (even though they speak as though they have) and although we can rebrand what we're doing, as it's not going to make or break our app, I am concerned that by doing so we are being bullied or coerced into doing something which is not even necessary.

At this stage no one really cares about our product and if we're lucky some people might care once its available to use and buy, so we don't have time or energy to spend on the wrong things (such as this).

Any advice, help or suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks :).
,A Startup’s Most Valuable Asset: The TeamStartup ventures are exciting, dynamic, and risky. They require a balance between luck, skill, and timing. Of all the essential elements regarding startup businesses, there is one particular element that remains paramount: the team members.

For many “financially-deficient” (aka bootstrapped) startups, choosing the correct team members/founders may be the most important decision the young company faces. Despite this truth, it is all too common for startups to constuct their team with insufficient or unsuitable candidates. This type of behavior is not just harmful, it’s potentially deadly for a young upstart business.

I see many startups invest most of their focus on things like: marketing strategies, business name / logo, and market position — before ever really considering the composition of their startup members. The fundamental problem with this is simple: idea and strategies mean nothing with the wrong people in the driver seat. It is critical to place the correct individuals in the correct positions in order to achieve maximum efficiency. This becomes difficult as a startup begins developing ideas and executing particular strategies.
Here are a few aspects to consider when constructing your startup’s fouding team.

Is your friend the “right” choice? Friends are the easiest and most convenient individuals to bring aboard your startup venture. Friendly conversation does not necessarily translate into smart business tactics, however. Your friend may be a great person to bounce ideas off of, but not the right business partner. Take advantage of your friend status and mentally project them into a startup role. From all that you know about that person, think about a few scenarios:

    * how well do they handle stressful situations?
* do they possess perseverance or do they stop at the first sign of hardship?
* are they trustworthy?
* how well do they communicate?
* how do they handle uncertainty or chaotic situations?
* what is their level of dedication or passion towards projects?

No money, no problem. Lack of cash is often considered a major startup obstacle. And while this may be true in most circumstances, it does provide an indirect benefit in the case of bringing aboard team members. Startups with little to no working capital are fueled by one thing: passion. Bringing aboard individuals with no promise of monetary compensation ensures that they are in it for all the right reasons. You can worry about salary and payroll after you ship your first unit.

Previous entrepreneurs welcome. There are certain intangibles one learns from operating inside the trenches of a startup company that cannot be learned anywhere else. This is why you should always look to bring aboard previous entrepreneurs given the chance. The company benefits greatly from the individuals’ prior startup experience and you gain a trusted business partner who understands the difficulty associated with launching a business venture.

The most important point to remember is this: your startup’s most valuable asset is its team members…so choose your partners wisely! Remember that at the end of the day, you and your team are the ones putting the ideas and strategies in place. It’s not enough to have an idea, you need the physical manpower to execute them effectively. A founding team needs to have the right balance of intelligence, innovation, and drive. In order to achieve the correct balance, your team members must share a common passion while working towards shared goals.

trueventures-teammembersI saw a great affirmation of this belief when I came across a particular venture capital firm’s website, and noticed their portfolio companies. True Ventures, an early stage tech venture firm, showcases their portfolio companies in a refreshing way. If you notice, all of their investments are accompanied with a picture of the founding team. Although it is just a picture, it establishes the old investment addage of: “We invest in individuals, not companies.” This is something that we as entrepreneurs hear, but sometimes overlook..
,VW to Change Logo in Preparation for Electric-Car Era,Crowdspring: marketplace for logo design, graphic design and website design,Startups with Marketing Budgets – Logo Placement on an Indy Lights Car?,MarkMaker – prototype logo generator,Ask HN: How to find a good designer for a small project? We're a relatively young B2C software startup looking for a designer that helps us position/brand/style our product more professionally. We are looking for a simple branding package to align the design of our applications and marketing material (logo, typography, icon set, colors, etc.). The budget is $5k - $10k.

Should we look for freelancers instead of agencies? We think that agencies have advantages like faster turnover and multiple involved people who bring in different ideas and concepts. The downside is the higher price.

Is the project/budget too small for an agency?

Where do I look for good designers that fit our needs? Upwork, Dribble, Behance?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!.

,DIY, Outsource, Partner... How should I approach creation?Hi all. I come here for some advice. Like plenty of others, I have an idea for an internet business. I know that an idea isn't worth much though if you don't act on it and execute. So, I've been trying my hardest to do what I can. I'm not technical, but I've been been working in all the ways I know how and learning what I don't.

I've developed the idea, asked potential customers questions, got feedback. I know it has potential. So, I designed the website wireframe, business model, marketing model, logo...

But now comes the time where something useable needs to be created. I can show potential customers a wireframe and ask them questions, but until they actually show they are willing to use (and pay) for it, I know I don't have any real traction.

I come here asking for advice on how I should approach creation. There seem to be three approaches:

1. Do it yourselfn2. Outsourcen3. Find a co-founder

Now, I am determined to learn to the technical side regardless. I've started on that journey, tackling HTML, CSS, and Javascript. I'm no expert, but I understand. I want to go after PHP as well. However, I know I don't have time to be professionally proficient in a reasonable time. It won't stop me from learning, but I'm not sure if it's the smartest way to approach this. But please, tell me if I'm wrong. I don't underestimate the amount of work/experience needed to be a great coder though... so I don't expect to be good enough in a few months.

In regards to outsourcing, I have a good amount of money saved, enough to hopefully create something. However, that something might not even be close to the end goal... and then what? What about when customers ask for more? What about maintenance? What if I do go to investors and it's just me... sure, I consider myself valuable on both the business and design end of things, but with no one to cover the technical aspects, who will want to invest? Which brings me to...

Finding a technical co-founder. I'm from NYC and plan on going to some startup meetings I've found out about. However, I know this is a scary proposition as well. For one, I have nothing created, so will anyone want to even come on board? Then I guess I need to assess options 1 & 2.

I just am looking for some guidance here. I'm at this standstill and I feel overwhelmed with all the options and just pick a direction and go. If that's outsource and then find a technical co-founder once something is implemented, then I'll tackle outsourcing now. If it's DIY, then pick up my pace (hell, quit my job, live at home and make studying and creating my new job) so I can get things going. If it's find a technical co-founder, than go out there and prove myself.

Anyway, I apologize for the length of this post, but I guess I have a lot on my mind here. But any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!.

I'm the so called 'leader', and I'm having the following problem -

I'm a huge fan of Github and Travis CI design. I just love the characters and the way they help the marketing of the product. I have a great idea of a character that fits the purpose of the product. The problem is that the designer doesn't like having a character in the logo as it is 'too childish' .Of course, I mentioned we can use it in email marketing etc.In my opinion having the character in the logo is crucial to the marketing. How do I persuade her that we must do this? What are the pros and cons to having a character? In short... can you compare the success of top products who feature a character in their logo and top products which do not. e.g which one maximizes the probability of a 'unicorn'..
,Ask HN: Client Threatening about blog post against meI am a creative designer with a good reputation. I have recently done a logo for a social media marketing guy. He sells information product on social media marketing. After doing several revisions of the logo and working very hard for the client, he told he don't want to continue with me and asked for refund of advance. I dont do that because I have put lot of work into it.

Now the client is threatening me by telling about his skills in social marketing. He says he will do all possible thing to do negative publicity against me and a reputed Design agency, where I am working part time.

Just got an email telling he has given me deadline till Wednesday and after that he will start putting blog posts and other social media things against me.

Anybody faced similar thing before ? What should I do ?

FYI: There was no official agreement or any thing signed. Only exchange of emails..
