hello Paul Hamilton here for iPad, monthly we're gonna jump into a little, bit of logo design but I have to say, that the main focus of this lesson is, actually mathematics so currently with, year six we're looking at our, transformations flips rotations, reflections and we want students to get, a better understanding of those kind of, geometric location maths concepts so, what we're actually gonna do is going to, do that through a little bit of design, so what I'm gonna do is just bring in a, shape here I go here just bear with me, while this assembly app goes through, I'll make it a little bit bigger and, basically what we can start to do it, before we get into that creative mode is, say to our students okay our logo design, let's say it's a new logo for McDonald's, or a new logo for Nike or something like, that but we can actually dictate and set, some parameters that it must have a, transformation in there must have a, rotation in there must have a reflection, in there and what our students can start, to do is if I do some duplicates here, and making a duplicate here we can start, to get our kids that are actually doing, their logo design but actually starting, to bring in some different aspects of, mathematics with it so I might just do a, little join that up there you can see, there that I'm starting to play around, with some different things I might, actually do a little bit of a flip there, I do it back to front so it actually, goes there I could do a full rotation, that shapes behind what I could do is, actually do a whole one here bring that, over here now and I can actually start, to build my logo design that's actually, based on something slightly different, than what we've actually done you can, see there it's starting to look really, really good so we can actually play, around with colors and do those, different things but if we look at logo, design as something that has to involve, different maths that we're actually, studying and then we can actually say I, don't know I might just quickly take a, screenshot of that and we can actually, bring that into something like let's, bring it into book creator so I'll get, out of here for a second and go to new, book, we can actually get our kids to actually, talk about their designs in regard to, mathematics concepts that actually use, so if I actually bring that in what we, can actually do there is start to look, at the students actually bringing in an, arrow for example we might bring in a, shape, we'll get that point to it turn that, around make that a little bit longer and, we can get our kids talking about those, maths concepts those reflections those, rotations those transformations actually, in their logo design and so it's just a, great way of students actually thinking, about the kind of the design maker, praise process but also get them to, actually acknowledge the different, mathematical concepts that they're, actually using in their designs so, that's just a great way I know in, Australia it's the year six curriculum, it really looks at those different those, reasonings and those geometric and, locations so it's a great way of kind of, in I guess integrating those maths, concepts with the arts and also tech, design as well Paul Hamilton here for, iPad monthly signing off
Ask HN: Introducing my son to programmingMy 6 year old has an interest in science, maths and technology. I was wondering if I could introduce him to programming to see if he likes it. I'm aware of languages such as logo and scratch but was wondering if there are any others and, more importantly, if theres anything I should keep in mind or any techniques I should try?
Any and all advice appreciated. Programming and my love for it accelerated my learning in primary school and I was curious to see if my son has inherited the 'bug' :).
,Maths rebels look to reform Estonian education,Ask HN: best languages to learn as a newcomerA friend with an astrophysics and maths background is looking to get out of her current gig in journalism and into software. She's got minimal programming experience (beyond BASIC in the 80s), but has a startlingly sharp mind, so I don't see lack of experience as a major barrier. She's asked me what language/s is/are worth learning.
I've suggested Ruby or Python just to get the fundamentals down, BUT (and this is where it differs from previous Ask HN threads similar to this), she wants to use her maths/physics knowledge towards creating industrial/scientific applications. With that last bit in mind, what language(s) are worth her investing time in?.
,Ask HN: VAT and sales taxes for small SaaSHello fellow HNewsers.
I would love to learn how you handle VAT (Value Added Tax – and other applicable sales related taxes) for your small (or large) SaaS businesses.
For example: the VAT rules are quite complex in the EU. The rate you pay is based on the location of the customer, rather than where you are located. In some countries elsewhere I know there to be a threshold you need to reach before you have to start paying. Additionally it seems the rules and rates keep changing.
My question to you is:
- Do you handle this yourself? If so, how much time does it take?
- Do you outsource it to a third party? If so to whom, and would you recommend them?
- Do you altogether ignore it, and hope you won't be caught?
When first becoming consciously aware of the need to collect the applicable taxes myself I was quite surprised to find it wasn't something companies such as Stripe handles for you out of the box. It seems like a no-brainer service for a payment provider to handle?
There are services like Paddle which act as the merchant and deal with the taxes for you. Paddle comes at quite a hefty premium though (5% + 50c/transaction – meaning if you have a subscription price of 5EUR and sell to a customer in a country where the VAT is 20% VAT, the maths end up looking like: 5 - 20% - (50c + 25c) = 3.25EUR going to you. In other words Paddle effectively costs you 15% of the sales price...). The premium might of course still be worth it given they deal with all the bureaucracy.
Thanks for your time and suggestions!.
,Ask HN: Looking for Junior Developer Vacancy for a University Level Maths TutorMy friend is looking to pivot careers from being a maths tutor for university students. He's been a tutor for a number of years and has a very high level of maths but he's looking for something a bit more stable.
He likes the idea of coding and has started down the route of being a web developer. I'm sure he'll be a rockstar developer with some experience under his belt but getting the right first job is the toughest.
Anybody out there hiring junior web developers, ideally in London UK? Or recommendations where to look?.

Quick context: At Springworks (our company), we moved to WFH from mid-March
and then announced our remote-first policy on May 6th. We’ve been since optimizing our home offices and our Slack workspace for productivity and testing lots of team-building activities.
We saw lots of traction with Quizzes, but they required fixing up a timeslot, downloading a separate app and conducting the quiz over a Zoom call.
That’s when we decided to build a Slack app for quizzes inside Slack.
Introducing Trivia! https://www.producthunt.com/posts/trivia-for-slack
With Trivia's suite of quizzes, you can bring Social & Fun back to your workspace (right inside Slack) even while working remotely.
Trivia quizzes are fun, easy to launch, and provide a quick 5-minute break to your workday.
MCQs - multiple choice questions with 4 answers each across topics like science, tech, business, movies, entertainment, and even Maths and Grammar. Look out for the GoT, The Office and Harry Potter quizzes as well.
Seamless - play with your team anytime, anywhere right on top of Slack
Multiple game types (coming soon) - for variety
Leaderboards (coming soon)- track results real-time along with final podium standings showcased at the end.
Check out the video for a walkthrough of how it works (watch at 2x speed): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCnQLbGeUNU
Try it out. It’s free for the first 10 quizzes and 7 days.
PS: Trivia for MS Teams is coming soon too!.
,Pullback of complex functions as a logo for the Twitter Math camp,Possible jobs areas after math doctorateA friend of mine finished her maths doctorate and worked in a startup for 3D renderings. Unfortunately the positions was discontinued. They are looking for jobs where maths plays part in the daily routine. But would like something different then statistics or optimizations.
Which industries, fields or institutions would offer or require such topics?
I am trying to find possible work areas and help her, but my industry knowledge only applies to a small field not related to maths..
,Why do cauliflowers look so odd? Cracking the maths behind their ‘fractal’ shape,Ask HN: Recommend a maths book for a teenager?I'm looking for recommendations for a maths book for a bright, self-motivated child in their late teens who is into maths (mainly analysis) at upper high-school / early undergrad level.
It would be a birthday gift, so ideally something that is more than a plain textbook, but which also has depth, and maybe broadens their view of maths beyond analysis. I'm thinking something along the lines of The Princeton Companion to Mathematics, Spivak's Calculus, or Moor & Mertens The Nature of Computation.
What would you have appreciated having been given at that age?.
,Ask HN: Do you know any fun science/maths books for a casual read?I am looking for books related to maths/science which can be read in bed without a need to take notes or work on proofs..
,Ask HN: Developer roles that require advanced maths? Are there developer roles that require advanced maths? I know that machine learning and AI require relatively advanced maths but I personally am not quite interested in it. Quant developer is another role I know that requires advanced mathematical thinking but I often wonder if it's really meaningful apart from providing some liquidity. What are other roles that a programmer could potentially transition to that requires advanced maths?
A bit of background about myself: I’ve been in the industry for 7 years and have worked on low level messaging system, rails backend, and more recently frontend web apps with React. I love learning new things but after 7 years it seems on the technology side, I’m not seeing anything that interests me to a large extent, on the backend or the frontend. I’m recently considering obtaining a maths degree via Open university, it’s a huge undertake but I’m willing to put in the effort. I also did well in the maths courses when I majored in CS in college. The real issue is time though. I don’t see myself context switching between day job as an app developer, and going back home studying maths at night. My experience while switching from backend to frontend developer made me believe learning on the job is a very effective way. Thus I’m looking for a job where advanced maths is required as well as programming skills.
Thanks!.
,Ask HN: How do I re-learn maths as a middle-age person?I'm in my early 40s. Recenlty I was looking at one of my old CS textbooks (Mitchell's Machine Learning), and I quickly realised I have forgotten most of my maths, I found much of it impenitrable, despite having no problem with it when I was at university.
It's been 18 years since I've had to do any maths beyond the basics, that was just some trig to do coordinate conversions. Most of the code I've written since uni has been information systems, not mathmatical in nature. I'd love to try my hand at interesting problems, a bit of ML, stats, probability, perhaps simulation or signal processing, and some electronics. But I feel like a carpenter who's forgotten how to use his saw.
I'd really like to regain what I've lost, and perhaps advance a bit more from A-level (that's the 16-18 qualification in the UK). I know I can learn it, I did before.
What are good resources for re-learning maths? I have two small kids so I'd like to find something structured that I can do a little at a time in the evenings, a good book with exercises or an online course would be great..
,Looking out for number one
