Numari is a number puzzle I've been working on for a few months that I (finally) completed recently. This game was made with the intention of appealing to those who like games similar to Sudoku.

I actually released this as a native app in 2018 (for both iOS and Android), however the rules were a bit too complicated for the initial release (the game used to allow for diagonal movements). Since the general feedback about the game was positive, and since I was looking for an excuse to play with and learn React, I decided to remake the game as a web app with slightly different rules than the original version.

I love C. I like C++ too. I used to write a lot of Java when I was a kid (as in high-school kid) but now that I've written quite a bit of C and C++, Java seems more like a toy language. I did enjoy Java back then, however. I yet to do any major work in C#, but it seems to be a powerful language, especially when handling certain kinds of complexity.

I've been learning LISP on weekends for two weekends now, and I find it interesting. I know little bits of Haskell (am planning to learn it later this year) and seem to like it too. Maybe I like the idea of liking Haskell, I'll know for sure once I actually start writing Haskell.

Coming back to the point - I don't like Python. I've never liked it. I've tried working on various Python projects but have always found some or the other excuse to prematurely back out. And mind you, I love coding - I spend most of my time writing code or learning new stuff about code.

My question to the hardcore python lovers is this (and mind you, by hardcore I mean the kind of people who wrote Exaile, not the kind who hack up a Python script every now and then to organize their iPod): No doubt many of you have come from C / C++ / LISP backgrounds. What is the paradigm shift you experienced? I look at a piece of C code in a certain way - how do I look at a piece of Python code? How do I think about Python? How do I think in Python (copied that one from Bruce Eckel)?.

I’d like to share with you my project: JSDB.

Two months ago I had this thought while reviewing a PR on a web application. What if I didn’t have to write code to communicate with my backend or database?

It would be fun to just use arrays and objects like you normally do in javascript and have things magically save.

That weekend I hacked together something that used proxies and classes to ‘magically’ send data to your backend when you assign or access properties in an object or array. Using the same API you already know.

This means you can save data like this: items[x] = {a:2,b:false} and read data like this: console.log(await items[x].a) or console.log(await items.find(o => o.a === 2))

While sharing it with some devs I started to get comments like this? “Wow that’s super simple. Is it secure?”

So I started building a platform around this idea. A platform that allows javascript developers to write full stack applications, with the least overhead possible and just writing javascript.

Security Rules are JS functions, files are simply assigned to an object property, triggers are JS functions etc. Everything is javascript! Check the docs: https://javascriptdb.com/docs

Why?

Because there are developers that can write code using arrays and objects but are not confident with backend code.

I would like to lower that barrier and empower every developer that knows JS to be full stack with the least effort possible.

Aren’t there other platforms that solve this problem?

Yes, there’s some great efforts. Supabase recently had a killer launch week and I have tons of respect for what they’ve accomplished.

JSDB targets the javascript lovers, the devs that rather just write javascript and would like to avoid sql if possible. By design it will only work on javascript codebases.

Is this production ready?

No! It’s still an MVP, designed to show the idea and where I’m going.

I presented on dogfooding at Tribesports at last week's London Hacker News meetup (http://skillsmatter.com/podcast/home/dogfooding). We received some really valuable feedback at the event, so we thought a rate-my-startup post might be of interest here; we'd certainly love to hear your thoughts.

About a year ago, we began building a new tool for sports lovers, a place where people can build up their complete sports profile (like Steve's here: http://tribesports.com/users/steve), join Tribes based on their sports interests and take on Challenges to get motivated to do more in sports.

We launched into open beta earlier this month, after about 3 months in private beta. You can sign up using email, Twitter or Facebook - a process we've tried to make as easy as possible.

A few tech details if anyone's interested: we're running Rails 3 on Ruby 1.9.2, with the following core gems: devise/omniauth for authentication, resque for background jobs, sunspot/solr for search, and capistrano for deployment. For development, we use cucumber for acceptance/integration tests, and rspec for unit tests.

Me and my two co-founders we're working on an iPhone app (for now) for vinyl record lovers and collectors.

We're having good traction and retention, testing some different pricing model and looking forward to a monthly subscription plan.

The industry is a niche, a bigger one actually, and it's 15 years that is constantly growing. A mix of nostalgia and need of the people to own a physical product rather than an mp3.

We're looking for investors or acceleration programs, but I'm always hesitant in what direction to look for in our case, considering the niche.

Should we look for pure investors (for the sake of just money) or should we look for someone who's a vinyl collector?

The market is there, opportunities as well, but this won't be an "AirBnB/Uber business opportunity" (well at least for now!).

I know it might sound like a dumb question but somehow is not.

I truly believe in this project (I'm coming from a failed vinyl record project which actually was well known between vinyl record lovers), I want to make it happen and I'm trying to figure out what would be the best approach to connect with someone who believe in us, the project and our vision.

Albeit a $300 down payment for a designer may sound cheap to some, it's turning out to be very clean looking and contemporary. In regards to the developer, I pay him $300-$350 for a set of tasks every 5-7 days. This way, it's much easier to keep track of his progress and pay him accordingly. As of now, the basics of the website have been developed, and it's now to the point where you can play around with the very basic functionality of the social network.

Now that I've just about exhausted the $1000, it's time for me to start seeking seed funding. I had considered a business loan, but even though I have my own LLC registered, I'm unable to open any type of account under my name with any financial institution, due to my age. I reached out to a few firms that I found on CrunchBase that focus primarily on early-stage investments, providing them background on who I am, what I feel I'm capable of, and then asked if they could grant me a few minutes of their time to pitch my idea. Unfortunately, I've yet to hear back from any of them. I'm unsure if I'm just not being taken seriously of if they're simply not investing in anymore companies at this point in time. A simple reply to my email would've definitely been helpful to help me determine what I'm doing wrong, yet that wasn't the case.

In 2009, I started a hosting company that offered Xen-powered virtual private servers. Within the first week of being open for business, I was able to get over 100 paying customers to sign up and buy a VPS. It became quite successful until I had to shut it down to focus on school. In addition, I've taught myself Objective-C and have experience with Linux and managing servers (I have also been running an IRC network and managing it myself since 2007). Now, I'm an early high school graduate. I finished my last day of school a few weeks ago and can now pour all my time and energy into bringing this project to life. Additionally, college doesn't start anytime soon, and I don't have a job that would occupy my time.

I assure you my idea isn't a 'Pinterest for dog lovers,' or an 'Instagram for sports photos.' I consider my idea to be pretty unique, thus the reason I'm going forward with it. I apologize if I sound arrogant or cocky at all (I promise you, I'm not like that!), but I just want to make sure nobody thinks I'm here to waste anybody's time.

Would you guys be able to point me in the right direction? Do you know of any investment firms in the position to make any new investments? Anyone I could talk to for advice? I'm in the Los Angeles area, but flying up north to meet with investors wouldn't be a problem at all. I'm very eager to keep the ball rolling and continuing to build this website the way I've visioned it.
