okay so moving down we are gonna need a, logo let's go ahead and make a custom, logo for a site even though it's kind of, cool they gave us this alder logo to add, a logo I always like starting at logo, maker com, that's L OG o ma ke R without the e.com, all right once a year we can click away, from the video and first we just want to, search from a gothic so I really want, the blog to be a travel blog and for, that reason I'm gonna go ahead and, search for a jet or an airplane that, sort of thing all right cool and you get, really more examples of icons than you, could ever want all right so once you, search for a little bit at all your, icons and you could search something, else like really any keyword you can, think of then you're gonna settle on an, icon and I really like this one up top, because it just makes me think of a nice, cool private jet just floating through, this guy taking you wherever you want to, go so we're gonna grab it and it'll come, into our panel here and we can see it's, really easy to just click and drag and, move it all right you can also click on, the corners and make it bigger and they, have these helpful aligning lines, looking good now we just need some text, so let's click on that T and I'm gonna, start typing something, well that somebody's gonna be Bluehost, set up calm because that's the name of, our domain name and in most cases I, think the title of your site should, match your domain name plus it described, cold we're doing here we're setting up, an awesome blog at Bluehost the best web, hosting okay so here we go with our text, we're gonna position it next to our icon, but not too close so we don't want any, overlap unless it happens to look good, that way which it could really I guess, it cool maybe it does to change the font, we can go up to the drop down for simple, and modern and change it to something, cool like handwriting and then you're, gonna get more drop-down options on the, right so go ahead and play around your, heart's content don't go too crazy here, after all your logo should be clear and, easy for your readers to process alright, so I really like happy monkey I think, it's just the right amount of style for, me right now and make a little bigger, and what I'm going to do is change the, color about the text and the icon to do, that you just want to have one of them, selected like right now we're citing the, text now click on your color wheel and, it will change to match wherever you, point and click we can check out our, site to see what kind of colors are, prominent right now so it's gonna be, kind of tans lighter Gray's blacks maybe, even like a pink so let's go with that, direction here let's just to make it, easy on ourselves I'm gonna try to go, with like a nice orangish pink color and, then you can do the same thing for the, icon itself we can click on our airplane, icon and we can change that to maybe a, slightly darker version of what we just, chose and bear with me if it looks crazy, at first I think our vision will hold, true once we get it done right alright, almost there guys, and one rule of thumb is to definitely, have the first text first letters of, your logo be clear so we don't want that, be cut off or something weird like that, we want to be super clear the first, letter of your text all right and we, nailed it, so you might want to add more icons of, course you can do that you can go as, crazy as you want there are so many, different options once you have your, logo looking perfect all you to do is, just crop it on the lower right to get, rid of the unnecessary whitespace so, this looks good we'll bring out a little, more white spaces I was just gonna be a, pain in the butt in WordPress so get rid, of it, and now that entered to confirm the cup, and where you're gonna click the Save, floppy disk icon to save it alright now, we're gonna say no thanks and name our, logo logo version 1 sounds good and save, it and there are instructions here for, giving credit to logo maker so please, make sure to follow these steps and add, credit once you're done uploading your, logo where it says no credit is required, just click follow this guide and we can, scroll down and say that for a website, what you need to do is copy and paste, some text like this and then make a, credits page and then link that to logo, make your URL so back in WordPress I, know it's an additional step but you, should have this page always going, forward is hover, new and click page call it credits and, come down and we're gonna paste that, text beautiful and then we're gonna link, that to logo makers so the way you add a, link is just by first getting the link, it's we're gonna get the link to logo, maker comm which is just logo maker com, copy that now in WordPress we're just, gonna highlight this old piece of text, click on the link icon to add a link and, then paste your URL click the gear to, make this open in a new tab and click, update and publish that credits page, awesome great job and make sure the, credits page is displayed somewhere, prominently just like they request you, to do so okay now to upload our logo, we're gonna go back to WordPress and hug, around appearance and click to customize, we're spending a lot of our time you and, now we're gonna go to header and logo, settings and click select image under, upload logo, now select files that WordPress will, search your computer where you're doing, your work from and it should find logo, version 1 just click open all right and, click Choose image and hopefully it, works and it did awesome great job guys, so we now have our own custom logo of, course you can add any icons you want I, just kind of like it cuz there's an, airplane and it also symbolized this, like launching something or starting a, new journey which you might be doing, today with your new blog at Bluehost, and by the way I'm sure you guys can, make a way better logo than this alright, let's publish exit and take a thump page, and see what we made ok job we're really, cruising now
Ask HN: Review my webapp: Mobile site makerHi everyone! I just finished my app (ready for public Beta release after your feedback) and am hoping to get some feedback from the HN community.
http://gmbhnews.com/make-mobile-site/ is a mobile site creation service. You just add your blog urls ( +rss feed url ), and it generates a mobile optimized version of your site. It's very easy for the publisher to generate a mobile blog, All you need to do is add your blog, copy the generated code snippset in your blog for redirection to your mobile site and you are good to invade the more than 3,3 Billions mobile devices out there ( By 2011, 10 billion wireless devices will dot the Planet–five billion mobile phones and another five billion wireless devices ).
The mobile generated sites are optimized for almost every mobile device platform (symbian, iOs, Android, PalmOs, cell phones....etc) and publishers can monetize their mobile traffic with adsense for mobiles and keep all their revenues.
At the front end http://www.gmbhnews.com/ people can use the service as a news reader/discover dashboard, everything has been kept to the minimum necessary to give peoples a great experience reading news/blogs on their mobile devices, and saving the readers some bandwidth. I hope this can serve some of you and will welcome all your suggestions. FWIW , it's a bootstrapped startup and I'm still struggling to create a decent Logo for the front end www.gmbhnews.com/ (hope there's a designer reading this :) and willing to take a shot on it).
NB: the weird url: /make-mobile-site is for SEO purposes, till I can convince high profiles blogger to take a look and give me a chance (TC, RWW, Mashable......), got to count on SEO.
----> The user front end www.gmbhnews.com site is optimized for mobile devices and webkit browsers , looks very weird in other browsers but still works!.

,ASK HN: I encountered an online scam operation. What can I do?A family member got sent a link in this format
https://bazaraki.to-dispatch.ink/83923676746
and they were asking them to do some payment verification to receive a payment. They usually target victims that are selling on Facebook, Ebay and other websites. They then craft a specific website for your item and pretend to have paid and send you a link to collect the payment. Because you are a "first time user" they have a specific verification page that you need to input your card details.
For example if you sell a piano on hackernews, they then make a website called
hackernews.3ds-order.online/123123
123123 is the unique identifier of the piano, with a correct image, and on the top left they will also put the logo of HN. To sell the fake page even more.
I did some reverse lookups on their webapp IP (185.106.93.21) and I got more than 40 pages with scammy names.
Examples:
3ds-order.online, payl.online, processing.tel, qhdns.net, rentcars.store, toptyler.com, transferz.online, deal-express.icu, dealy.ink, fast-deal.live
NS servers:
ns1.qhdns.net, ns2.qhdns.net
I contacted some registrars like NameCheap, but they say I don't have enough evidence. I have screenshots similar to this other person that also blogged about this scam [1]
So my question to HN is, what do we do in such cases?

,Tell HN: Steal my ideas #2A while back I submitted a thread with ideas that I had but likely would never use. It got a decent response so I'm back with more free ideas for you to steal. Again I apologize if some of these already exist. If you've got your own, why not share them below?
Idea #1) Kickstarter in a box
It seems like every day I see a new story or blog post about X new product that was funded on Kickstarter. But what do the projects that get funded have in common? Usually they tend to have high quality videos, great photos of their prototypes, good rewards, clear and effective copy, etc.
However, the people with neat projects may not know much about video production, they aren't photographers, they may not have a website for their product, they may not be great writers, may not know marketing, etc. So the idea is to have a consulting firm that would offer a full service Kickstarter package. You'd get the creator with a great product a website, a high quality video, good donor incentives, great copy, high quality photographs, help marketing etc. In exchange you could take a % of their funding if successful, just like Kickstarter does.
Idea #2) A YC/Techstars consulting firm
The basic idea is that they'd obviously be a prior team or group of individuals that participated in YC/TS who would help hopeful applicants refine their applications, prepare pitches, interview practice, investment advice, etc.
Idea #3) Freelancer deals
The basic gist is that the site would sell the services of freelance designers, developers, writers, marketers, etc, Groupon style. Say you're a good designer but you're looking for work. You normally charge $60/hr. You could offer a special to this site to do 2 hours of work for X people for $20 instead. This would probably be enough time to make a decent logo/layout for someone. Although the designer may be doing work for far below their normal rate, their portfolio would be featured to everyone visiting the site. In addition they'd have the chance of recurring work at their normal rate from anyone who bought their deal. This also gives the buyer a chance to try someone temporarily at a minimal expense before making a bigger commitment.
Idea #4) Teach me
One on one live video music/gaming/etc lessons. Education related startups seem to be a really hot market right now so maybe some of these already exist. The basic idea is that you'd pick a niche and have a site of professionals in that niche. Say musicians for example. You'd be able to pick a guitar player that you like the style of and the site would allow you to take live streaming video lessons for $X/hr. The instructor would be able to give you immediate and instant feedback, etc. You could do this for a lot of industries I'd imagine.
Idea #5) Codecademy for investing
Many people are somewhat clueless about investing and saving for retirement. This site could help teach you on a basic khan academy level about the fundamentals of investing, guide you on the right types of investments for you based on info you provide, help you sort the different packages by various investment firms, etc..
,Tell HN: Professional Branding and Identity for your Startup for $100My friend has extraordinary skill at creating company branding and identities. He created the logo for my startup ( http://www.blabberize ) and its been really great for our image. He recently is spending some free time between jobs and mentioned that he has been doing some sketches for fictitious companies to expand his portfolio. He finds creative work more fun than most of the high profile companies he works for. I suggested that there may be some people who would love to have the quality of his work in the startup community that may not have the resources to pay for his caliber of work. Heres a link to his portfolio:
http://www.thomas-doyle.com
Hes willing to deliver a company logo for $100. All you have to provide is: 1: Name of the Company 2: Imagery that you would like incorporated and/or text 3: Your vision of what you like the logo to look like.
I'm posting this here because when I started my startup four years ago I didn't have any money to spare and I needed a logo. My friend ended up building this stellar iconic graphic that ended up being our defining image. He went on to bigger and greater things, and I felt lucky that I got to tap into his talent back when I didn't have the money and it was worth so much more. I think it anyone starting a startup would think this is a godsend..
,Ask HN: Stock image as website logo: any side effect?I'm building a website. It is bigger than just a side project. Found an image on one of the stock image sites, bought it for $20. I use this image as site a logo. I contacted the artist. Asked him to make few illustrations for my website in the same style. He did. Everything fine so far.
No I'm thinking about uniqueness of this logo image. The picture was sold for a long time on this (and few others) stock image sites. It is still available there.
Should I get (buy) some exclusive rights ? If I do this — what happens to the people who bought this image before?
Should I just add the unregistered trademark™ symbol somewhere near this image and site name?
Should I ask the artist to modify the image to make it unique? (something like adding one or two letters from the site name, "pied piper" style, you know)).
,Do you need any permission to add your client's company logo to your website?Hi there! I’m working for a young startup and we already have some bigger brands among our trial users, but I’m not sure if we can already add their logos to our webpage as our client or not. What is the legislation in this situation? Shall we have their permission first to add their logo to the website or it’s not necessary? What is the best-practice in this case?
I see many companies (even younger startups) who show their clients’ logos on their websites and I just can’t imagine they asked every company and each of them approved to use their logo basically as a reference. We’re an American company if its help.
Thank you very much for your help!.
,Ask HN: When your friends ask "can you build me a website?"Hey HN,
It always happens, someone has an idea, and they want to create a website quickly and cheaply. So they turn to their techy friends, and ask you to do it!
Now, the majority of such sites are just a logo and some content, which they will produce themselves. Hence, my question is, rather than building and hosting a static site for them, where do you send them so they can do it themselves? Obviously there a huge number of options out there, but the ones I've come across all seem very crude.
I'm imagining something like Tumblr in terms of ease of use and customisable design, but without the blogging focus.
Would love to know!.
,Ask HN: What Elements Has Your Perfect Pricing PageHi,
I am working on our future pricing page and looked at 303 websites and came up with a list of best practices for our pricing page.
I wanted to share my finding and hopefully you can add yours?
- Call to action headline that matches the unique selling points mentioned on the homepage
- Subheadline will give details on trial, no credit card needed, amount of users in system (if the over 10,000), sense of urgency using get started in 60 seconds. Product positioning (what does the product do). Value messaging
- Plan that focus on different markets you address
- Website design Features, Pricing & Plans, About, Contact and remove the rest (including login) form the menu so there not to many links.
- Trust element top right (phone-number will work well there)
- All plans above the fold
- Free plan in bottom right of plan (if your bootstrapped, but if you have VC money and Freemium is your strategy, place free as first plan)
- High to low or low to high, 62% of SaaS companies have low-to-high and with lack of research I guess thats the best. (We will go and test these once we add the pricing page)
- Badges (user logo’s) under plans as trust elements (make them gray so there not distracting)
- Communicate the differences not focus on the similarities of the plan
- Scanable (not to long page)
- Clear pricing (good contrast)
- Use color on background of plans to keep focus on each plan. Mouse over background on horizontal is a nice feature.
- Make bigger plan feel bigger using a visual element that becomes bigger with the growing plan.
- Keep in line with website design
- Important features in F eyetracking line (price, plan differences and sign-up button)
- Mention USD not $ (Austrailian and Canadian dollars look the same)
- Testimonial under plans
- Explain how things work billing, 30 days, free under plans
- Mouse over on features
- Little amount of links (you do not want them to click away)
- Impeccable grammar (in my case huge problem :-) with easy fix... let someone check it
- Call to Actions Orange
- Blue color gives trust we might use these on plans that are not the preferred plan (need to test this)
- Green associates with wealth (try to add green check-marks on items that are simular)
- Use full screen width for plans (no right blocks with sign-up or text
- Repeat 14/30 day trial under sign-up buttons so they know what they sign-up for (<button: Sign-Up> for 14 Day Trail)
- Add some credit-cards logo's or payment processor logo to pricing page as trust element if you do not have a lot of well known clients. You can also add SSL seal if your just starting and have little trust elements available.
- Social Proof (twitter accounts, positive tweets, testimonials etc. all help (under pricing plans)

,Ask HN: Freelance graphic designGreetings fellow hackers...
I have a fair bit of design work I would like to have done in the near future. It includes....
1. Aesthetic-only redesign of our website (just some templates really, not the actual finished product. we can handle content and the HTML drudgery),
2. Some print media brochures of our products,
3. some tradeshow displays and business cards.
We already have a great logo but unfortunately our designer has moved on to bigger and better things.
There's two avenues I want to explore:
1. I know there are some sites where you can post freelance design work like this for people to bid on. I have forgotten what the good ones are; does anybody recommend a site and/or person who has done work for them in this fashion.
2. If you know a freelance designer (preferably a person and not a firm) who can do most or all of above described things in the 4-7k range (depending on the quality of their portfolio) whom you recommend, I am all ears. We are on a budget as you might expect and I can't really afford to pay more than this.
Thanks in advance all..
,The blog is running EXTREMELY slow. Can you find out why? This blog has been running EXTREMELY slow for the last few hours.
I've tried it with CURL and everything is working quick, so server is working OK.
Something else is delaying it. I've tried checking on Chrome Console and Network just takes forever between the logo and the next thing but the logo itself takes no time, so I don't know what's going on.
Can you please check?

,How do you feel about forward metablogging? (A question of mareketing and usability)I'll make the assumption that we know about Metablogging (blogging about blogging). What about forward metablogging?
It's a phrase I've used maybe twice on my own site, but numbers of times have I talked about it, and how it's a destructive practice for the end-user. Forward Metablogging is a type of blogging or in other instances of user interaction where instead of linking them directly to a website being reviewed or discussed, you forward them to another article on the same site, about the same topic.
Example: TechCrunch's article about ClickPass(http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/03/11/clickpass-could-change-the-way-you-surf-the-web/) doesn't directly reference ClickPass until the third paragraph, but however has the site logo affixed next to the first. Software developers should be familiar with what a perceived affordance is. If a user sees a radio button, they expect it to perform like a radio button and perform the task it says it will do.
That said, you click the ClickPass button, and it takes you to another page also operated by the TechCrunch team that holds no value to a user expecting to see this ClickPass site in action.
Other sites like Technorati, CNet, even CNN do this type of 'bait and switch' all the time. Even links with the title of a web app or website placed directly between <a> and </a> never take you to the site itself, but to more blogs.
If software performed like this, the exodus to web applications would be monumental. All of that said and keeping relevant to YC themes, from a usability front do you think forward metablogging is a good practice for users to experience who plan on running blogs based on their startups and business ideas for fear they may inadvertently do it themselves and ruin the experience of their applications?.
