so what if you need a new logo for your, website but you're not a designer, well you need a logo maker tool but, which one is the best, after i did a quick search on google, there are about, 930 million results like what, so for the past week i set out for a, journey to find out the best, the creme de la creme the pinnacle of, logo makers, just so you can save time and get the, best possible tool, for your needs to achieve this i tried, all of these 19, tools let's dive deeper into the free, and paid logo creators, that i've reviewed plus i found an, interesting tool for those of us, that don't know how to design stuff i'll, show it at the end so stick around, [Music], sweat punch hello internet people my, name is robert, and for this video i've used three, criteria to judge the logo makers, usability icon library and price i don't, want to bore you with the details you, can, find all the criteria definitions and, specific scores, for each tool in the link in the, description, now what i noticed right away is that, many tools are really bad, like somewhere between shite and crap, and this is what i mean so most of the, tools start really nice, so you choose stuff like the type of, industry, also design style that you prefer and, usually also color palette, then obviously you fill in your name for, you the logo and maybe a slogan, but then the results are a bit, disappointing, nope nope, crap crap, again crap well that was a weird noise, crap after spending hours on reviewing, all 19 tools, let me show you the ones you can, actually use, as the best free tool we have, squarespace a very popular website, builder, they also have a logo maker and the best, part of it, it's super easy to use and it actually, has a decent icon library, although the icons themselves they look, pretty basic, but at least there's a lot of them the, only restriction with this tool is that, it's quite limited with the editing, possibilities, so there's only a few things you can do, here it's totally free and you can get a, high quality png, with the transparent background for free, my overall score for this tool is 17 out, of 25., by the way there are not that many free, tools that also allow you to use the, logos without attributing to them, so for example here's a logo maker you, can export the logo for free but, whenever you use the logo you need to, attribute, the logo maker let's start with a few, honorable mentions, they're good tools but just didn't make, in the top three, first one we have logomaster.ai it, starts, like a lot of tools where you have to, select some of the logos, that you like so that it can generate, some suggestions for you, in my case i just selected what i want, for my youtube channel, and then it starts giving different, layout suggestions with this tool you, can edit pretty much anything, it's full on logo editing software and, you can change everything on your screen, and i think the grouping of logos is, very well made, it made a lot of sense and it helped me, to find a different logo design, quickly the thing is it does cost 22, dollars for a png logo and 66 dollars, for a vector logo, so that's something you want to keep in, mind my overall score for this tool is, 19 out of 25., honey i made a portrait of you then we, have design, evo this is a proper logo maker it seems, to be specialized, only in logos and you can tell it right, away it has a lot of templates and, icon options and some look really great, the only thing is that the amount of, icons, just makes it hard to find where you can, start the tool is not free, but for a png you pay 25 and for vector, about 50 bucks the editor is easy to use, it's very intuitive you can really see, that the team behind this tool has put a, lot of effort into usability, my overall score for this tool is also, 19 out of 25., the next two tools are the best for, those that really don't know how to, design, things so for those that don't feel that, designing stuff is their thing, i recommend luca.com they have a large, icon library with icons that, look good luca can also generate letter, logos, which is pretty cool and not that many, tools can do that, it's almost as cool as you hitting the, like button of this video, you suck now you can't move elements, freely in luca, so the layouts are fixed i usually hate, this, however you can pretty much adjust, anything on the page, so i never felt restricted by this, limitation, and as in many other logo generators you, first enter some of your preferences, like colors and logo styles, and then it will start giving you, suggestions once you are done with your, logo you can see it in context so for, example as a logo, business card invoice and so on now luca, is not cheap, as it will cost you about 65 to get the, high resolution logo, but when compared to many other tools, this price is justified as you just get, a bit more unique designs, and better quality logo suggestions my, overall score for this tool, is 19 out of 25., remember how i mentioned in the, beginning that there is a surprising, tool, in the mix well it's actually not a logo, maker per se, but it's called fiverr.com which is a, website where you can hire someone to do, a custom logo and the price is similar, to, what the logo makers charge you fiverr, is always, easy to use because you just need to, contact the seller and they will ask you, a few questions about your logo needs, and then usually you will get a few, design concepts, and it will take you from a day to five, days for the whole process, now keep in mind that at lower price, point i'm pretty sure that the designers, reuse logos from somewhere else, but at least in this way they modify, them a little bit and make them a bit, more unique, than if you get it from a logo generator, now fiverr has a wide price range but, the cool thing is that you could get a, png logo for about eleven dollars, and for vectors it's like forty dollars, i think it's a decent price considering, that somebody is, actually going to help you choose your, logo so this is definitely the best, option for people that don't know what, they need, overall score for this tool 21 out of, 25., if you're curious to know if these, freelancers are any good, check out the white youtube card should, appear somewhere here in that video you, will see, different logos based on the price, category you choose, so you get different quality with, different prices it's like the time they, were trying to, save some money and cast me as a mermaid, i think the best overall tool is still, campbell and i say still because i, made a similar video back in 2019 but, canva is just, it can do everything you need in terms, of design canva is not only for making a, logo but, also for your website images, infographics ads, social media and so much more it's a, full-on, design tool the templates just make it, so much easier, the reason i like it so much is that, it's easy to use and it's easy to edit, things, and they have a lot of templates not, only for logos but also for, other design related stuff like your, social media ads, physical things like business cards and, you can name it there's just a lot of, different templates, they also have a lot of free elements, although they are pretty basic, the good thing is you can buy separate, elements for like a dollar, and you can upload your own elements if, you want to for example if you found an, icon that you really like, you can upload it and include it in your, logo design, but just make sure you have a copyright, when you do it for free accounts the png, doesn't come with a transparent, background but you can quite easily go, around it by using another tool that, will, remove your background i'll leave a link, in the description to tool like this, just use a background that is really, different color than your logo, and you'll be able to make the, background disappear, and if you choose to go with the pro, account of canva it goes for about 13, a month my overall score for canva is 21, out of 25., so those were my recommendations do you, think i got it right, did i miss Ask HN: Is there a way for indie developers to avoid the App Store Tax?Several large entities like Netflix, Spotify, Epic Games, and Tinder seem to be successfully avoiding the “App Store Tax” (30% on all purchases) seemingly on account of their size and clout.

The Financial Times (much smaller) blatantly gets away with a message in their app saying “You can join the Financial Times by going to our website” and prevents users who aren’t logged in from reading articles. There’s no way to pay for an FT subscription in the iOS app.

Is there a way for independent developers to do the same?

Could I have a login splash page with my app’s logo and no other information that subtly encourages people to Google for the app’s site where they can then sign up? Or could I charge a separate “iOS usage fee” that’s in addition to my app’s main subscriber fee?

For context, users of my app also have access to a web client with many additional features. In fact, the app is an ancillary product with a subset of features that are useful in a mobile context.

Here are my four best ideas for what to work on next. I don't know how to "validate" them beyond a landing page/adwords. Last time I attempted that, adwords banned my campaign immediately.

Business naming app: After all the naming debacles I've seen on HN, I think an app that generates names (and checks against .com registration and trademark) could be really useful. My big doubt is if anyone would pay for it.

,Ask HN: Ever hired an artist?I've been making social apps for about two years now, but so far they have never used graphics. I don't know any artists, and don't really know where to find them, or even the right terminology. What I'd like to accomplish at this stage is as a test get a few simple drawings done, such as badges that users can get, and then expand from there once I find a relationship I'm comfortable with.

I've tried posting on DeviantArt and other forums, but when I browse the replies others are getting, the portfolios posted don't seem to compare well to the level of graphics in social games like FarmVille. Now I'm thinking that instead of trying to contact individuals, I should find some kind of an art company which has already gathered such talent. ,Failure to launch US phone Covid-tracking apps?What's going on with phone based covid-tracking apps? Apple & Google
have widely released bluetooth based tracking capabilities that need an app to leverage them, and in the US these seem to be state based. The US has a disgraceful national failure to have a countrywide plan for most cv19 issues. The Google & Apple strategy we have seems to be that each state makes their own app leveraging the infrastructure. My state (Washington) doesn't have an app as of now.

Only a few states have released them. Washington State people have been working on an app for a while; commoncircle.us seems to be their website, they have a github site that hasn't had a checkin for a couple of months. Is this effort dead? Their twitter account has nothing since July. Why isn't there an app available or any discussion?

,Walmart has old Macbooks for sale cheap at their websiteThey are of course just 10.7 max, old Intel Core 2 Duo Macbooks. They are good enough for someone just starting out who can't afford a modern Macbook. You can buy 10.6 Snow Leopard from Apple to run 10.6 on it and use Rosetta to run PowerMac apps. 10.7 removed Rosetta.

I'm sure it can dual boot Linux or Windows as well using Bootcamp. A good student starter laptop with the Apple logo on it for as cheap as $99.

,Ask HN: How to you go past Windows Defender SmartScreen?We are about to distribute a Windows client from our web site, for potential users to test our upcoming solution. The code signed application still triggers Windows Smart Defender into displaying a scary warning.

I am trying to find a way to get rid of this. I have been trying to solve this problem for a couple of weeks. I can't believe we are the first one to face that.

,Ask HN: I'm 17. Should I drop school for YC S12?I'm extremely interesting in applying to Y Combinator for this summer. The only problem is that I'm still in Cegep (a two-year college for Quebec students before they go to university - I'm 17) and so if ever I get chosen, I still have one more year remaining to complete my program (International Baccalaureate in Pure & Applied Science).

I don't think I would drop it, because I ultimately intend to go in computer science at Stanford. Therefore, I would have to leave the Bay Area at the end of August in order to move back in Quebec and stay there during the year and come back in the summer when I'm finish my program.

I would still have time to work on my startup during the year, but at a much lower pace (2-3 hours each night and 8-12 hours on weekends). The other guy on my team (he's 17 too) is in a much less intensive program then me and he could continue working almost full-time on the startup.

Yet, if you guys tell me that I would absolutely need to continue working full-time on my startup, I will consider dropping school more seriously. It would be hard for me, but if it's really necessary I could do it. The thing is, the program I'm currently in, International Baccalaureate, is a program that I must complete in two years. The special thing about this program is that we are the same group for every class (we started 40 now we're 28). If I drop/fail a course, I'm out. And I then need to go in regular science. If ever I were to be selected for YC, the choice would be quite hard as I said, because I really enjoy my program, I'm fond of the other students and I appreciate the teachers a lot. And I also fear that I won't go back to school if I enter the startup world.

At least, I'd like to finish my program and then maybe take a break from school to focus on my startup. My program requires a lot of effort, it's considerably more challenging than regular science, and I just don't see myself dropping it when I'll be halfway through it, but still there's a lot of chance I would - it's 50/50. I'm constantly debating in my head whether I should drop or stay, but I guess I'll wait to see if I'm selected for YC to make a final decision. Ultimately, I feel I would drop my program, because YC is such an amazing opportunity and also because I have a very good co-founder who is a long-time friend of mine. He would definitely succeed in convincing me :P

Moreover, I'm the only one writing code. My co-founder (who's currently studying in Business Management) will be working on the marketing (posting on the blog, making videos showcasing the app, posters in schools and other places, talking with other companies so that they use our app, etc.) I also have a graphic designer that will not be directly involve in the startup but that will do my logo and help me design icons, textures, etc.

Without even knowing anything about my idea (I can tell you though that even if I'm the only technical founder, it's not an overwhelmingly complex app and I am confident that I could manage the coding alone. All features would get implemented during the summer. During the year, I would only make little changes to the user interface and update the content of the app, but I probably wont implement radically new features, that is if I choose to stay in school. The goal during the year would be to get as much users as possible and thats exactly what my co-founder would be working on full-time. Complex new features would get implemented in the following summer.), because really I don't want to be chosen for my idea but rather for my team (I've got this interesting idea that I want to work on, and I like it because I would actually use the app, and actually, Ive got a bunch of startup ideas (Im the kind of guy that always has tons of ambitious projects going on and new ideas in mind: I want to code apps, make feature films and crazy edits, learn new monologues by heart, run marathons, travel around the world and learn new things!), but this particular one is not too complex to implement, yet if it turns out that I choose to do a completely different project, then so be it! Anyway, I dont think the idea I apply with matters that much (but it ought to be good obviously), because anybody could apply to YC with a similar idea and develop a similar app. But would they really be as much passionate as us about the app and as much caring about the users, would they achieve to convince companies of using it, would they convince people of using it? I know we would. My point is that Im expecting to be chosen a lot more because of my team than because of my idea. The reason I want to go through YC is to meet interesting people, discuss ideas and because I'm sure it would be a tremendous experience. If I don't get chosen, I will still develop my app over the summer, but I just think YC is an outstanding opportunity and that I ought to at least submit an application. I will continue submitting applications every summer until I'm chosen.

P.S. As a developer, I'm not that skilled, but I always manage to figure things out by myself and find a way to do what I want. If I'm stuck, I don't easily give up. Nevertheless, I'm more of an idea guy. I'm currently following tutorials from http://www.raywenderlich.com/store since December in order to get more familiar with the iOS 5 SDK. When I'll finish them, I'll look at the Parse SDK (http://parse.com) and then at the Facebook iOS SDK (https://developers.facebook.com/). I will then code an app similar to FML but it will be called 'You know you're in IB when...', IB being the program I'm currently in. I will integrate the Parse SDK and the Facebook iOS SDK in this app. It's a simple app that I want to do for testing purposes and also because I know that my other classmates would actually use it and that fact motivates me a lot. I will then start working on the real app that I want to do for my startup. My goal is to have a working app with bare minimum features for the end of May so that I have something to show if ever I move to the Bay Area. ,Ask HN: promoting and positioning very early stage web apps?I'll put the 'TL/DR' version up front: When following the 'it's never too early to launch' philosophy, how do you position the application to visitors or potential customers?

I hear PG and others saying often that you can't really launch too soon; that you should launch as soon as your app is remotely useful; in fact that if you were not uncomfortable with the state of the product when you first launched you waited too long.

I've done that, launching the first iteration site of a site in the past week. While the feedback (quite limited so far) is helpful and interesting, frankly I am a bit uncomfortable with the state of the product. The site has some utility but it should be obvious to anyone who spends any time on there that this product is in what I'd consider a pre-beta state. It's not that the site is buggy or that there are dead ends or 'coming soon' links or anything like that. The features that exist in the live version are relatively polished. It's just that the site is clearly 'light' on features and content.

I want the feedback from having my application live, but I'm afraid my app isn't complete enough yet to justify promoting it very much. But without promotion I won't get much feedback.

(One answer is laboratory style user testing, paper prototyping and the like, but I could have (and to a limited extent, did) do that without launching. I believe there's something valuable about the real world context, but I'm not entirely comfortable with the initial impression I'm giving to visitors.)

So, how do you position a very early phase site with customers/visitors/users? I guess we could slap a 'beta' sticker on the logo, but that feels like the modern equivalent the 'under construction' digging guy from the 90s--it indicates 'broken and likely to stay that way' as much as 'early stage and dynamically improving'. Besides, is 'beta' is just a term of art for our industry? Does the public at large relate to 'beta' in a meaningful way? I'm not sure my target market does.

Is there a way to say 'yes, we know it is lame right now but just you wait and see' without turning off potential users or looking unprofessional? Is there a way to send a strong enough message to invite the public at large to check out the site without setting them up to say, 'lame, call me back when it's ready?'.

I am constantly thinking of ways to better the world and make certain things in life less complicated or constructive for the mass.

Ive been passionately trying to start a business since I was 18...and failed or pivoted many times. This is the order in which they have originated from.
I am still working on a few of them! Looking to hash them out more with other Entrepreneurs that believe in my vision or engineers that would like to assist in wire framing or designing beta sites/apps.

1st idea - MealDealz: Dining deals. Coupons and discounts for all the popular restaurants and fast food places. Now there are many alike.

2nd idea - MiServices: Directed toward younger individuals trying to make money on the side walking dogs or putting up christmas lights, etc but would like to be accredited through ratings. Something better than Craigslist but you're not licensed so you can't technically be on Angies list or Yelp.

3rd idea - Readr: Discover and share books you love and start a book club online. Have authors start a book club for their new releases, or fans start one. Now alike Goodreads.

4th idea - Betsy: make bets online and through our application with others on any topic from the Tech world, Entertainment, Sports, Politics, etc. Earn points, humblebrag and use the points to get cool rewards.

5th idea - standUP: organize all the online campaigns into one place. Enlighten people on common issues and how to take action through either petitions to congress, sharing the message or supporting the cause, etc. Show all the trending topics currently going on: Occupy Wall Street, GunControl, Internet Control, Oil Spill, Education, War on Drugs, etc. Then the main objective would be to help people establish their standpoint on the issue by showing all the different points of views and how they could easily take action all in one simple organized application. The app would be like the One campaign app.

Plus many other ideas! But these are the ones that I've either already worked on or are currently working on.

I am fascinated with the concept of building businesses, the surprises with successful marketing, and the power of social media and how much impact it has on the world.

I can assist in creating a business model. Assist in product design. Make Logo. Talk to potential customers, test design hypotheses. Figure out sales and marketing strategy, find beta users, warm up early adopters, performance tracking, online profiles, help create a blog. Research. Checking up on competitors and how they do business. Or help collectively create a meaningful mission statement explaining why we give this service/product.

,Ask HN: How do you feel about .io ccTLD used for US web-app?I have spent a good year developing a great web app for programmers (in the US). I asked a few SEO 'experts' if a .io domain would have an effect on my ranks. I got a unanimous reply: 'no.' So I bought a really great name.
After all is said and done, and I do some research myself, (naturally) I see that it DOES in fact affect rankings, as it's not considered a gTLD.

I've tried doing some googling, and it's difficult due to the short 'io' keyword, but I have a few questions.

I'm wondering how this will affect me trying to make my app popular in the US (ranking wise). I find it frustrating because .io is so popular among 'tech apps' due to its input/output connotation.

1. Do you think theres any hope for this being moved to a gTLD?

2. Do you think in general I should just stick it out and try to keep going? (I have already designed my logo, and everything about my app, around this domain)

3. I read the following on a blog post I found. Can anyone shed some light on if this is relevant?

'Here's to hoping that Google adds .io to their list of blessed domains soon.

Also, aren't TLDs going to be opened wide-up soon? So, that makes gTLD, rTLD and gccTLD stuff less relevant?'.

I am looking for someone to test my app, it's a small web app prototype to help event organizers build cross platform mobile apps, the main concept here is building blocks and cloud storage. With these two modules I can automate the whole process. I mean any kind of informative app without complex business logic can be built that way, I'm thinking about portfolios, small businesses apps, etc..

The idea is not new, similar services already exist but what I'm offering is very cheap compared to what you can found on the market. Also many features are still not implemented... like accent color, logo, etc.. The finished product of course will be an APK and IPA files.

,Ask YC: what is the future for browser extensions that personalize the web?i'm in a position where i can launch personalization on 30,000 browsers. but i havent - because i'm not sure what the equation with websites, my monetization options, and my users could be.

so i thought i'd ask the community, with the example of a few cases & existing scenarios:

[1] GetGlue provides a check-in mechanism for pages you visit. They basically augment the website with toolbars,links, 'like' buttons, badges & so on & even referral links to 3rd parties

[2] webmynd adds personalization to google

[3] rapportive adds links,and even third party raplets into gmail

Conduit[4] has a toolbar, that triggers personalization within webapges and is in the top 100 websites visited in the world today

my question :
1. will they alienate themselves from content destinations ( their 'hosts' )
2. will they be able to sell advertising on a space owned by the host

here in india, a comparable scenario would be when popular dailies occasionally had a pamphlet that the delivery boy would fill and make some money out of. but guess what. the newspaper sued the advertiser - not the 'enabler'.

that said, there are content/personalization cases where the line is more blurry and tilting towards what the user decides to do.

eg: skype extension[5] that takes numbers on a page and turns them into 'call via skype' buttons.

or more recently google's highlight extension [6] that let's you double click/select random phrases on any page, and it displays a google logo with a search button right there. does this account for monetizing 3rd party content? essentially users of this plugin could be on a yahoo or bing page, select a word and a google search would show up. it's kind of a tricky case of accountability IMHO.

if my users want a site personalized, does that justify my plugin personalizing content/websites?

Or perhaps Cooliris [7] & Facebook's [8] form of bizdev driven personalizaton offer a half way path. I think wibiya [9] has reached great scale and are in a position to offer a non-extension,publisher-controlled personalization experience.
