What Happened to Translation in Android?When you select non-english text in Android, the first option in the context menu is Translate with the Google logo. You would assume this brings up Google translate. But pressing this option in fact just opens a Google search for "translate XXX" where XXX is whatever text you selected. No translation widget appears on the search result page and I don't actually get a translation unless I click one of the links (which look like spam in the language I'm translating).

Has it always been like this? Why doesn't the translate button actually link to their translation service?.

We provide a tool to convert design files between Figma, XD, Sketch, Figma, PDF and more and have recently rebranded it from "XD2Sketch" to "Magicul". We started out as a simple tool to allow users to import XD files in Sketch hence the name XD2Sketch but soon added more features. The name just didn't make sense anymore. Magicul initially seemed to be a great name, but turned out to be a bit of an interesting pick when translated to French.

We've sent out a newsletter to our customers to let them know about the changes and here's what one of our users replied:

Hey folks,

While I understand that you guys probably hope to operate primarily in English, I think it needs to be mentioned that your brand name "Magicul" in french, literally means "Magical ass"... but the real kicker is the .io of the domain, which literally means input & output...

So here goes the bad news... The entire french community is reading your brand name - literally - as: Magical ass (dot) in & out.

And then there's the logo itself... which is a hole with a hat.

Christ. You can't make this stuff up. This is ugh, umm, a brutally unfortunate brand?...lol

I'm in Quebec, Canada, where french is dominant and so I'm keenly aware of this - and so are my partners, colleagues and friends. We all had a good laugh.

This becomes difficult as a startup begins developing ideas and executing particular strategies.
Here are a few aspects to consider when constructing your startup’s fouding team.

Is your friend the “right” choice? Friends are the easiest and most convenient individuals to bring aboard your startup venture. Friendly conversation does not necessarily translate into smart business tactics, however. Your friend may be a great person to bounce ideas off of, but not the right business partner. Take advantage of your friend status and mentally project them into a startup role. From all that you know about that person, think about a few scenarios:

,Ask HN: How do I pick a logo? /$500 99designs contest with 70 entries/I kicked of a $500 99designs contest for my logo on Friday and received over 70 submissions already. I eliminated the most obvious suspects and asked friends and family for help.

The contest doesn't end until Friday and I wonder if there's an algorithm of sorts I can use to tackle existing designs and the ones that will, undoubtedly, be coming.

I understand that combinations of deep red and black don't make for a good web site built around the logo. I also find myself partial to the sci-fi 3D orbs -and- the flat shape designs like #55 or #11.

Other bits of interest... This is for a web-based compiler (source-to-source translator) between various trading languages. The aim is to enable users to migrate between platforms at a push of a button, without having to manually rewrite their strategies. The plan is to charge $400-600 per translation.

Translator is written in OCaml, the backend is OCaml with Ocsigen, uses Amazon SimpleDB and S3 and Plimus for payment processing..

We’re a startup and have recently been victim of a series of repeated fraudulent DMCA takedown requests filed with Google against our website, a popular regional/niche (Persian) media platform called arzdigital.com which is very dear to us.

Each time this happens, lots of our website links are delisted (currently 45 Urls) from Google and hobbles our business. Despite DMCA notifications being sworn statements filed under penalty of perjury, the reporter is making an entirely baseless/false claim using a (presumable) fake name, disposable email, and VPN, so while submitting them is a crime, our website is still delisted. (They’re claiming copyright over our logo, which is completely bogus.) This amounts to a legally-specified denial-of-service, as I understand Google has limited discretion in how they respond to properly formatted DMCA takedown requests.

We are heavily dependent on Google inbound traffic and we generally receive ~750,000 uniques from Google to our website each day which, while we are delisted, We have lost ~250,000 uniques so far. We’re a media platform so without traffic, we’re toast.

We are very concerned that we will lose our rankings and perhaps our entire business (we are small but still we employ over a hundred people) if we can’t figure out a way to stop this from happening.

We already have submitted a DMCA counternotification, however it will take 10-14 days until we are reinstated. Meanwhile, the attacker has recently submitted a second fraudulent takedown notice for another 167 Urls (presumably in response). We are very afraid that this issue will keep us largely deindexed and perhaps entirely destroy our startup that we have worked so hard to build from scratch over the last four years.

Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a person or team inside of Google that cares about this sort of thing? I assume this attack doesn’t work against facebook.com; what is a little guy to do? Is there US-based law enforcement that gets involved when there is such blatant criminal activity? What should we do?

I'm hoping to find a (paid or open source) out-of-the-box, good UI, ready-to-go, "upload your logo / & customize colors & publish" type service (think: Shopify).

To anyone with expertise in this area, can you suggest any solutions to look into? I'd love to get my potential client a response back ASAP with a couple reasonable options / level-of-effort estimates. Thank you for any info you can provide!
