hello world my name is Mike plugger and, here at vis me we want to help you take, the proper steps in brainstorming is the, perfect logo first impressions are, everything for people this likely starts, with our appearance you likely made an, initial judgment on me just based on my, hair color or my black vis me polo, online first impressions come from our, social media profile pictures what's, that one picture that you're okay with, the entire world seeing now for, companies a first impression is often, made from a logo yes a simple image can, either direct an individual towards or, away from an entire company just like, pictures do with people the average, person might not realize it but logos, are also representations of what a brand, stands for everything from their values, to their mission to their story this is, why it's crucial to have the right logo, for your brand so where do you begin, don't fret in this video I'll give you, some ideas to help you realize your, perfect logo let's get started, brainstorm brainstorm brainstorm I, cannot say it nothing while it seems so, obvious and easy I have a couple pieces, of advice to ensure you're making the, most of your time first find the right, time to sit down and let your creative, juices flow for me it's often right when, I put my head on a pillow to close my, eyes and go to sleep for others it might, be when you're on your way to work with, a coffee in hand then whenever you're, feeling the most creative let it rip do, your best to stay focus in avoid, distraction brainstorming can often lead, to a chain reaction once an initial idea, comes to mind, more will start flooding in and hey, don't just let your ideas hang out in, your head put your thoughts to paper, whether a brilliant idea or something, that you're a little hesitant about, making note of all of your ideas will, come in handy later on down the road and, lastly when you're all tuckered out from, your brainstorm session let your ideas, marinate get away from it for at least, 24 hours and then revisit your ideas, you'll have fresh eyes and this will, help you decide what will or will not, work when it, comes to the branding portion of your, brainstorm a challenge for any company, is determining its brand what's the, story what are the goals moving forward, is there a mission statement what does, your brand stand for these are all, crucial questions to answer when, deciding on a logo that resonates with, your brand it's okay if you don't have, the answers to these questions just yet, because after all that is what I'm here, for so I have three easy steps to help, you get on a brand first write a list of, adjectives that you feel best describe, your brand maybe your brand is delicate, mature or unique and original write a, minimum of 25 adjectives to start before, narrowing it down to the five that you, feel fit best next write down how you, want people to feel about your brand, maybe you will others to see your brand, as fearless or dependable or adaptive, create the ideal perception for your, brand and lastly for getting on brand, what emotions do you want to instill in, others from your logo so they be excited, should they feel a sense of calmness, maybe you want them to feel all warm, inside whatever the case may be this, will help shape your design later on, now that you know the feelings that you, want to exude create an inspiration, board like Pinterest you might be asking, yourself in my answer to that is yes, it's just like Pinterest find designs, colors fonts images styles anything in, the design world that grabs your, attention and put all those inspirations, into one place like on a physical poster, board so later you can identify trends, that you like the most as you're looking, for inspiration keep in mind if you'd, like an image-based logo text-based logo, or a combination of the two there's, seven different types of logos each, emphasizing fonts colors and styles just, a little bit differently there's letter, mark or monogram logos and some of the, more famous letter mark logos include, HBO CNN in a personal favorite of mine, KFC a second option is word marks or, logo types these are quite similar to, letter mark logos except these logos, focus on the name alone as the companies, have distinct names several social media, companies use pictures and logo symbols, these are most often used by established, companies who are instantly recognizable, abstract logos can be completely unique, to your brand think of Pepsi I have no, idea what their logo is exactly but I do, instantly recognize the brand the second, I see the logo mission accomplished and, a job well done maybe you have a mascot, associated with your brand if so why not, make the mascot your logo they're, recognizable and fun think Pringles, kool-aid or mr. peanut from planters the, combination mark logos are exactly as, they sound, take the name of a company add an image, to it and you have the combination mark, logo in the last logo type that we have, is the emblem these are much more, traditional and are often used by, schools or massive organizations such as, Harvard and the National Hockey League, there's three aspects of your logo that, you want to carefully consider the font, the color in the style the typography, that you choose can help reinforce your, brand story make sure that the font that, you choose matches the adjectives you, use to describe your brand when you look, at your board, are there particular colors that you, favorited more than others maybe you, like bright reds and blues or maybe you, often pick from the greyscale the colors, you choose can help determine how you're, perceived lastly what style trends do, you see on your board vintage looks, floral style may be hard lines in a more, modern look, make sure the Styles you liked factor, into your design all right you're in the, home stretch once you've developed some, ideas invite some others into designs to, add perspective it could be family or, friends previous clients mentors you, name it find someone that you trust and, get a second opinion then take a look at, what other logos look like in the same, field, this can help draw inspiration or it, could help show you what you don't like, just whatever you do don't steal other, people's designs another thing you can, do is to put yourself into your, customers shoes just like when analyzing, their feelings try to put yourself into, their minds do you like your logo then, and lastly the final step in the, brainstorm extravaganza is to not forget, the end game where do you see your logo, going on the website on business cards, in front of a building soon your logo, will be much bigger than a thumbnail on, a screen or a doodle on a piece of paper, okay it's time to stop watching me clear, yourself a distraction and submerge, yourself deep into your own thoughts and, hey once you nail down an idea look no, further than with viz me to help the, design process take flight don't forget, to subscribe to our Channel to see how, we can help you in your design life, we're always creating new content just, to help you thank you so much for, watching and good luck brainstorming for, now I'm Mike blogger with viz me helping, you make information beautiful, [Music], you, [Music]
Suggest HN: Standard file locations for website infoIt would be nice, for automation, to standardize information locations.
For example, the standard logo for a company could always be at http://website.com/images/logo.png Perhaps there could be multiple sizes of logos that are standard as well.
You could also have contact information always at /contact or /contactus
I'm not so concerned about the actual urls as I am the desire to start a convention like this that we can all use moving forward. How many times have we pasted a link to our logo or uploaded our logo? Or a company asked for it for an article or testimonial, etc...
If we could just specify a base url to grab the information, from any service we choose pretty much, then life would be a lot easier for us all..
,Ask HN: Websites for brand name and logo contestsHi everybody,
I'm looking for websites, where it is possible to submit contests to find a suitable name and/or logo for a newly founded company.
I would also love to hear about your experiences with these websites and maybe you have some interesting story to share about your own company name.
Your help is very much appreciated :).
,Tell HN: Professional Branding and Identity for your Startup for $100My friend has extraordinary skill at creating company branding and identities. He created the logo for my startup ( http://www.blabberize ) and its been really great for our image. He recently is spending some free time between jobs and mentioned that he has been doing some sketches for fictitious companies to expand his portfolio. He finds creative work more fun than most of the high profile companies he works for. I suggested that there may be some people who would love to have the quality of his work in the startup community that may not have the resources to pay for his caliber of work. Heres a link to his portfolio:
http://www.thomas-doyle.com
Hes willing to deliver a company logo for $100. All you have to provide is: 1: Name of the Company 2: Imagery that you would like incorporated and/or text 3: Your vision of what you like the logo to look like.
I'm posting this here because when I started my startup four years ago I didn't have any money to spare and I needed a logo. My friend ended up building this stellar iconic graphic that ended up being our defining image. He went on to bigger and greater things, and I felt lucky that I got to tap into his talent back when I didn't have the money and it was worth so much more. I think it anyone starting a startup would think this is a godsend..

,Ask HN: This is weird, right?Met this dude at a meetup here in DC and he said he was looking for early stage investments, wanted to hear pitches. I started a few phone conversations with him and got that unmistakable vibe I was getting my ego stroked by a salesman. He seemed way too interested in moving through his process (which keeps coming back to him mentioning offshore outsourcing) without really seeming to know much about my project. That is certainly due to me not explaining it well, but it seems like a legitimate investor would have passed on me pretty early on, rather than keep telling me "everything sounds great, let's move on to the next step in the process".
I start trying to look up his "portfolio companies" to see what they are like, see if I can't contact any of them and get an idea of what sort of contribution he made for them. I don't know what I'd get out of it, I at least wanted to know what size of companies he's investing in.
And in the process, I find this. This is his site: http://www.3siholdings.com/#!portfolio/cee5
The first logo is his own company. The second logo isn't even a company, it's the logo for a technology incubation initiative from our governor. The third logo, I did a reverse image search on and all of the links, for several pages, are just like this:
http://www.healthstylecatalogue.com/#!hc-providers/cee5
http://www.scprivatecapital.net/#!portfolio/cee5
http://www.acisup.com/#!portfolio/cee5
They all have completely different "teams". What is this, some form of multi-level marketing scheme with which I'm not familiar?.
,Ask HN: What's the worst that can happen if you get sued over a trademark?Let's say you're using a logo for your company that plays off a very popular one. For example, something like McDonald's golden arches but 3 of them. Kind of a gray zone, but enough to probably get someone's attention.
What's the worst that can happen? A cease and desist letter? Can they actually sue you for money?.
,NIPS changing name to NeurIPSJust got the following email in my inbox
Dear members of the Neural Information Processing Systems community,
Something remarkable has happened in our community. The name NeurIPS has sprung up organically as an alternative acronym, and we’re delighted to see it being adopted. Indeed, one forward-thinking member of the community purchased neurips.com and described the site’s purpose as “...host[ing] the conference content under a different acronym... until the board catches up.”
We’ve caught up! We were considering alternative acronyms when the community support for NeurIPS became apparent. We ask all attendees this year to respect this solution from the community and to use the new acronym in order that the conference focus can be on science and ideas.
We have taken several actions to support this acronym. First, all signage and the program booklet for the 2018 meeting will refer either to the full conference name or to NeurIPS. Second, we’ve asked sponsors to do the same in their materials and publicity, to the extent possible at this late date. Third, we will hire a branding company to design a new logo for the conference. Fourth, we’ve moved the conference site to neurips.cc, and the owner of neurips.com, Peter Henderson, has graciously donated the domain name to the Foundation.
Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to share thoughts and concerns regarding this important issue. The Neural Information Processing Systems community has a lot of people working very hard, and with much passion, to make the conference the best it can be. We look forward to continuing this conversation at the Town Hall during the conference.
Yours,
The Neural Information Processing Systems Foundation Board of Trustees.
,Apple Takes Legal Action Against Small Company For Using a Pear Logo,How important is it for a company to have a great logo?,Ask HN: Could developers use the licensing model professional photographers use?I was recently surprised to learn how professional photographers charge for their work. They charge for their time and expenses such as equipment rental, food, etc but the client never actually owns the IP. The photographer then charges a usage fee separate to their day rate and expenses. For example if its going to be in a magazine thats having 100,000 copies printed they would negotiate a fee for this and any additional use by the client would have to be paid for.
I see software companies as having a similar model where its pay per install etc.
What if independent developers were to adopt a similar charging model? Say I build a website for a company - charge for my time in building the site but then also issue them a monthly bill based on the number of people that have accessed the site. In reality I can't see anyone agreeing to it - but somehow professional photographers are able to charge this way.
In this article: https://fstoppers.com/originals/guide-pricing-commercial-photography-part-4-license-fees-8713
The author gives the example of the woman who designed Nike's logo and only earning $35 because she didn't have a license in place and at the time didn't expect Nike to become the company it has. It seems kinda incredulous to me that this person feels entitled to more money simply because they did a job for someone and was paid for it (presumably a fair amount at the time) and then because their business has done great they should be entitled to be paid more when they haven't really done anything extra to make the company the success it has become..
,Atlassian Takes the Gay Marriage Ruling Too FarI just pushed a bunch of my code to Bitbucket and my console printed out a huge rainbow Atlassian logo. I understand that many people are excited and happy about today's ruling, but I find it highly distasteful for a company to throw it in the face of many of their customers who are not happy with the ruling. Atlassian, show some respect and sensitivity..
,Ask HN: Whitelabel "Paid Forum/Chat Mobile App”-in-a-BoxHey HN gang, freelance mobile dev here -
A potential client is asking for a "company-branded forum & chatroom"-as-an-app, where different sections of the forum/chatrooms have membership-access paywall, all with a super simple UI. Customers should be able to download the app in the Apple App store, and then pay/sign up for various sections of the community (e.g. they might need to be certified before joining).
After some searching the web, I'm feeling a bit stumped.
I'm hoping to find a (paid or open source) out-of-the-box, good UI, ready-to-go, "upload your logo / & customize colors & publish" type service (think: Shopify).
To anyone with expertise in this area, can you suggest any solutions to look into? I'd love to get my potential client a response back ASAP with a couple reasonable options / level-of-effort estimates. Thank you for any info you can provide!
-J
* Full transparency, this is year #1 for me of iOS mobile app development, so with my current skill level, I'm hoping to cobble together existing solutions rather than build from scratch. Yak-shaving and all that :).
,Ask HN: Single-Page website builder with limited programmingHello,
I have had some ideas I wanted to transform into reality. It's a website for a company that I work for.
The idea is simple because we don't need to "explain ourselves". I'd just like a simple single-page web containing one animated logo and maybe 1-2 links.
How should I approach building the web? I have zero-to-none knowledge of web building. I've previously created web pages with wordpress but it's too complicated for my current needs.
Is it possible to create some responsive web in, for example, HTML5 (bear in mind I'm not familiar with the possibilities of each programming language offered for web).
I'd also like to not use all the junk-filled prepaid websites with other limitations that offer solution for my problem since I have access to webhosting a webserver so only thing I need is "the website". Pardon my language I'm not a native english speaker.
Thanks for any advice..

,Any advice on choosing what should be the dominant colour(s) for your start up?Hi, I am working as a freelance PA for a start-up company that was set up on July 1st and they received a customer after 6 days and they need to have a logo and a professional invoice so that they can get paid properly. The start up is not fully sure on what they are looking for in a logo as they wasn't planning on getting a logo designed for another 1-2 months. In short, does anyone have any good advice or experience in choosing what should be the dominant color(s) for their start up? (The start-up has spent a few hours thinking about it and has come up with 2 alternatives: Red, Black & White or Brown & Yellow. But the company is worried that they don't have any robust reasoning or logic to back up these suggestions). I am hoping somebody else on this forum may have been through a similar experience and can offer some advice..

,Ask HN: Help keep my bootstrapped startup runningI’m currently bootstrapping my startup (App Evolved) and have been doing so for the last seven months and I am flat broke. I've resorted to lending money from my parents to pay the accountant and technical (AWS, SendGrid, mLab etc) bill but my parents cannot afford to support me anymore.
Selling my apartment provided the initial investment because approaching multiple VCs lead to no investment. I did ask other family members but that lead to no investment either. My initial investment enabled me to incorporate the company, register the domains, pay a designer for a graphical logo and pay the technical bill for 6 months.
My initial investment is totally depleted. I am starting to panic.
No product is launched. I'm working 9-12 hours a day--sometimes even longer--on the product and it will be launched within the coming months (less than three months). I feel all I need is a little more time and funding before I can launch the product. When my product is launched, everything will change.
I am actively looking for work, as a web application developer, but no employment is being offered yet.
No one else at the company is relying on me for a salary however, I do have an Asian girlfriend whom I’m trying to help.
I really do not want to see my startup fail in this way.
I don’t mind sharing the Business Strategy and Company Overview (https://goo.gl/rgQrGR) so you can verify this is a legitimate business and not a scam.
Would you be able to donate some money so that I can keep my startup running? If you do, I will mention you name and Twitter handle on my company’s about page under “generous lifeline sponsors” and I will keep your details listed for my company's entire existence.
If you are willing to donate, please visit https://www.paypal.me/AppEvolved
If you are not able to donate any money, can you share some advice on how I can keep things afloat? Have you been through a similar situation? How did you keep things running with no capital?.
