given, me and all the requests that you've, given me to draw more bts for you, so um hopefully you love how this logo, turned out with all the colors i'm, putting in there and i'm not making it, too complicated so let's get started, to draw this bts logo we're going to, first start by drawing a straight line, for the center so we're going to start, right here and i'm just going to, try my best to draw a straight line down, and i'm drawing pretty small so that i, can do this free hand, but if you like you can definitely use a, ruler, to make it a little bit straighter, okay so i'm just going to start with a, straight line about that long, and i'm going to draw another line right, next to it, so we're starting to create these doors, there the two lines in so i'll start on, this side first i'm basically going to, create this angle that comes out so i'm, just going to say, about right here just give myself a, point, and i'm going to come down because it's, easier on my hands to draw downward, and then i'm going to come straight down, [Music], but you know what, yeah let's come straight down first so, i'm just gonna look at my camera here, make, sure and i can come in here later and, make adjustments because it's solid, black, if i'm not, if i'm wobbling, okay so about right there a little bit, more, i'll stop and then i'm going to connect, right back to here, there, so this angle is not as deep as this, angle well i think, i don't think it is, what i've seen from some of the bts, logos i think this angle is a lot, steeper than this one so that's what i'm, gonna do for for mine, okay so from there i'm going to do the, same thing over here so i'm just going, to, tentatively bring this point across, say about, right here, and i'm going to go up to that point, about right there okay so then come down, just like the other side, and i'm going to bring this across to, make sure i don't go, so say about right here, okay and then connect, seems so simple yet so hard right, okay so we have the doors in something, like that and then from there let's uh, draw the word the letters bts i'm going, to start with the t first since it's, right in the center so, give myself a little bit of space up but, right here i'll start, right in the center i'm just going to, draw a straight line across, and from there there's angles in this, letter so, i'm going to come down here with an, angle on both sides, and then come in, on both sides and then create, this straight line down, and connect it about right here, from there i'm going to start with the b, right here so i'm going to use this as, my edge so i'm going to make sure it's, about the same level so about right here, i'll give myself a point, and i'm going to come straight down with, a line, and make sure i don't, pass where my t is so about right there, and i'm going to draw a b, so right in the center and then another, curve, and over, so then inside is going to be two, rectangles that i'm going to create, right here, for the opening, and now the s so same thing using this, as my guide, i'm not going to pass that so about, right, there and i'm going to start with my, s right here, so about the thickness of this b so, about right here i'm going to, come up, the s is the hardest one so i'm going to, come down, about right there, okay so i'm just going to follow, create the other side, there we did it, it's a little bit high, but something like that, okay so that is pretty much it so i'm, gonna come in here and color this all in, [Music], so there now that it's colored in solid, black i'm just going to come in here and, attempt to use some colored pencils to, add some color behind the logo just to, make it prettier, and the goal will be to try to create, this heart shape behind it but with it and hopefully you are too and, you'll give this a try but i just want, to kind of go over what i did when i, first started as you can see i went, really lightly with the color pencil, first since i wasn't really sure what i, was doing so once i kind of figured out, where i wanted my colors to be i just, went in there and made everything darker, and then i kind of blended in the colors, to make it more, just more overall like a galaxy look and, then because of that i with the color, pencil it messed up all the black and so, then i went back in and made everything, black again so just one tip use a, sharpie that's old that you won't really, care about the tip because it the color, pencil will dry out the tip a little bit, as you you know keep going in there, so other than that um then i went in, there with my white out pen and um just, add some sparkle that's just because i, wanted more bling, so they're all done i hope you like how, it turned out and like i said i hope i, Ask YC: How would you go about teaching a child?More specifically, I want to teach my little brother some programming. He is 9 years old, pretty intelligent for his age, ie does really well in math at his grade level, reads at a much higher level than his grade. I opened up the python repl for him and showed him how to do basic arithmetic and some for loops and he seemed to understand, but I think it would be beneficial to start with something much simpler. The short solution would be to start off teaching him html, that way he can easily get a webpage up and see results happening on the internet. Then move on to either javascript or python and show him some simple dynamic stuff. The harder/longer solution would be to start working on a very simple language. Something like logo but with a web lib. I was tempted to start teaching him scheme because I myself am trying to get decent at scheme and am starting to understand macros and all that jazz, but am worried that by not seeing quick results on the internet he would lose interest. The main problem is that shared hosting providers usually do not have scheme setup to where you can run a web application. I don't really want to have to go through a bunch of hacks to get it to work either. So my idea is, and this would be a learning experience for me as well, to create a very simple scheme like language to teach a child web programming. I was thinking it would compile down to python, because almost all shared hosting providers have python installed. I have no idea what I am doing, but like I said it would be both a challenge for me, and something that would be beneficial for my little brother to learn programming concepts with. Thoughts? We’re a startup and have recently been victim of a series of repeated fraudulent DMCA takedown requests filed with Google against our website, a popular regional/niche (Persian) media platform called arzdigital.com which is very dear to us.

Each time this happens, lots of our website links are delisted (currently 45 Urls) from Google and hobbles our business. Despite DMCA notifications being sworn statements filed under penalty of perjury, the reporter is making an entirely baseless/false claim using a (presumable) fake name, disposable email, and VPN, so while submitting them is a crime, our website is still delisted. (They’re claiming copyright over our logo, which is completely bogus.) This amounts to a legally-specified denial-of-service, as I understand Google has limited discretion in how they respond to properly formatted DMCA takedown requests.

We are heavily dependent on Google inbound traffic and we generally receive ~750,000 uniques from Google to our website each day which, while we are delisted, We have lost ~250,000 uniques so far. We’re a media platform so without traffic, we’re toast.

We are very concerned that we will lose our rankings and perhaps our entire business (we are small but still we employ over a hundred people) if we can’t figure out a way to stop this from happening.

We already have submitted a DMCA counternotification, however it will take 10-14 days until we are reinstated. Meanwhile, the attacker has recently submitted a second fraudulent takedown notice for another 167 Urls (presumably in response). We are very afraid that this issue will keep us largely deindexed and perhaps entirely destroy our startup that we have worked so hard to build from scratch over the last four years.

Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a person or team inside of Google that cares about this sort of thing? I assume this attack doesn’t work against facebook.com; what is a little guy to do? Is there US-based law enforcement that gets involved when there is such blatant criminal activity? What should we do?

I'm CEO of a Germany-based eSports startup and we have a problem.

Today we were approached by a Chinese user of our website who told us that a China-based startup has launched a direct clone of our website aimed at the Chinese market.

Our website https://strivewire.com is a host of for-money eSports tournaments in the Hearthstone vertical, but we are working on expanding to other games as well.

The website in question is a very obvious clone of ours and has both .com and .cn domains:
- www.haogegebisai.com
- www.chosengamer.com

Basically they copied all the design and even our logo down to the actual URLs.

I've added their CEO on WeChat and inquired about this, and he said they are big fans of our startup. But he also mentioned that they already have investors. Their website launched two days ago and already has a bunch of activity.

We've talked about this internally and hope to be able to gain this startup as a Chinese subsidiary, but we are still unsure if this will actually work out.

From a legal standpoint we are very unsure how much you can actually do in such a case. Should we just wait it out? Our should we aim to litigate to put pressure on their investors? I have some experience in international litigation in cybercrime cases, but from a practical perspective it is very likely to bind a lot of resources and focus.

Another huge problem for us is that we are in talks with a very large Chinese IT company (triple-digit $Bn market cap), and if there is a clone growing in their backyard they might pass on us.

It'd be great if people with more experience in these things could give us some advice.

so I've been building my own Gmail for the past few weeks and would like your feedback.

The app you see in the screenshot is what I've been using in the past week and it starts to feel better than the gmail interface.

Just a quick explanation:

- It's conversation-based like Gmail.
- Conversations with new emails are on the left.
- Conversations may be labeled ... based on predefined filters or manually.
- Every conversation stays in the left sidebar until marked 'Done' or 'Pinned'.
- Done emails are accessed through the 'check'-button next to the 'MailApp'-logo.
- Pinned emails are moved to the right sidebar. This is basically a to-do list or for future reference.
- Both sidebars may be filtered by attributes or labels.
- The 'list'-icon, next to the filter in the left sidebar, gives you the classic gmail list in the center-panel.

Some technical background:

- It's build with Rails and PostgreSQL.
- E-Mail sending/receiving is based on the MailGun infrastructure.
- Turbolinks (https://github.com/rails/turbolinks) and Memcache for a speedy UX.
- All mail data is saved in a multi-tenant PostgreSQL db and for backup purposes in a IMAP mailbox on MailGun.
- Hosted on heroku.

I'm quite happy with the app by now and only go back to Gmail for older emails.

So my BIG QUESTION right now:
Would you even consider using the app, in case I'd make a commercial product out of it?
Would you pay for it?

Searching HN yielded that quite a few people are looking each month to leave Gmail (for various reasons),
but of course there are quite a few gotchas with my approach, especially considering trust-issues.

,Ask HN: How do I pick a logo? /$500 99designs contest with 70 entries/I kicked of a $500 99designs contest for my logo on Friday and received over 70 submissions already. I eliminated the most obvious suspects and asked friends and family for help.

The contest doesn't end until Friday and I wonder if there's an algorithm of sorts I can use to tackle existing designs and the ones that will, undoubtedly, be coming.

I'm a college student and a programmer. My dream is one day I will have my own kick-ass startup.

I know how to write clean code; but what I don't know is how to draw things with paper or CSS or Canvas or Photoshop or anything. I can implement Linux device drivers, purely functional data structures, lexers/parsers or socket servers; but I can't even design a simple logo or a good-looking webpage. Sometimes I do have ideas how the logo/webpage should looks, but I just don't have the ability to draw (implement?) them. To be clear, HTML or CSS is just another programming language for me, but I only know the syntax and grammar. I don't know how to do graphic design at all!

I want to learn graphic design, both for my current projects and for my future startup (same reason with the suggestion that 'non-technical' person should learn to code). I want to have basic skill on how to use computer to draw icons, logos, buttons and webpages.

But I have no idea what to do and how to start. How can a programmer learn graphic design from the ground up? Should I learn drawing in pen and paper first? Or should I learn Photoshop? Or should I just learn how to draw by writing code in CSS/Canvas? What books/websites can you recommend? Is self-learning enough or a mentor/teacher is required?

,Ask HN: My cofounder disappeared. What should I do?About six months ago I was contacted by a HN member who had a decent startup idea, good design skills, but no programming skills. We decided to work together to create a dating website that focused around the concept of posting a date idea, then seeing who might want to join you for that date. In this way the site matches people based on what they want to do, not who they are.

To make a long story shorter, the idea grew and morphed, as we went through design revisions and code refactoring. The original idea of the dating site was broadened into a more general event broadcasting site, like Twitter but specifically for parties, concerts, and other events. I also came up with a few other ideas (they key ones that make the web app stand out) that I won't give away.

But now my cofounder appears to have disappeared. We communicated by email and chat, and all I know of his physical location was that he lived in the Middle East. I haven't heard from him in long enough that it seems likely that he had an accident or some other unfortunate circumstance.

So I'm left wondering what I should do. Should I try to replace him? Might there be legal issues if I do so? We never wrote up a serious contract, just an informal email in which we decided in favor of a 49%/51% division, with me holding 51%.

In the absence of my cofounder I have completely changed the design, and have reworked the site's entire focus. At this point there is literally no relation to the original idea of the dating site.

Without giving away all the details that make my startup idea special, the web app is now focused on bands and their fans, allowing bands to broadcast news and gig schedules, and allowing fans to follow bands and broadcast which gigs/concerts they will attend.

There is really nothing left of the disappearing cofounder's original idea, and all that is left of his original design is the logo.

So to summarize the situation I am in: I have a great startup idea (All ingredients of which are mine, but could possibly be considered derivative of the idea of a disappeared cofounder).

What I need is a cofounder who can help with some design issues, put together a new logo, and who also has good marketing skills. Programming skills would be an added bonus. Primarily what I need is a designer and marketer.

,Ask HN: Do you seek quick/regular feedback on your project as you develop?I'm working on a small app right now and keep waiting for two of my friends to log on so I could show them what I did last night. It's not ready for a 'Review my app' post on HN yet and most of my friends/family aren't computer-savvy enough to give me useful feedback till the app is actually done. I wanted to know if I'm the only one who develops this way: I make a small new feature or two each day, show it to my potential users, get their feedback, and incorporate appropriate suggestions. Then I continue with the project.

By small feature, I mean UI elements, basic functionality and layout etc. I don't want to make the entire UI or a complex feature and then find out my users don't like it. So now I wait for my friends to tell me if the logo looks ok, the colors are decent, or if the keyboard shortcut makes sense.

I would love to form a group with HNers to test out little things in each other's apps on a regular basis and give feedback. It would be more like sharing with team mates and less like an organized beta-test. Would anyone be interested in something like this? The goal is to have more polished apps before we share them with the rest of the community and not waste too much effort building something that users don't want..

I took a look at Google Bookmarks and Delicious, but those two services are so cluttered with excess bullshit that I decided to do it myself.

I’m working for a young startup and we already have some bigger brands among our trial users, but I’m not sure if we can already add their logos to our webpage as our client or not. What is the legislation in this situation? Shall we have their permission first to add their logo to the website or it’s not necessary? What is the best-practice in this case?

I see many companies (even younger startups) who show their clients’ logos on their websites and I just can’t imagine they asked every company and each of them approved to use their logo basically as a reference. We’re an American company if its help.

,Ask HN: Brand and company are being hurt by Facebook scammers. What can we do?A s(c|p)ammer is attempting to defraud our thousands of our users via Facebook. The attacker creates duplicate company pages and then shares public photos from people who like our page or friends of people who like our page.

Thousands of these pages have existed for days and are continuing to be created on a daily basis. Because the attack pages include photos of the users, they get a notification and many (quite reasonably!) become unsettled. Some cannot tell that it is not actually the real company.

We tell our users to report the pages, but because each page is only reported by the user and us, many remain up.

We attempted to get a verified page by Facebook in the hopes this would grant additional protection (no idea if this is true), but were denied and told we can only re-apply in one month.

Is there anything else we can do to mitigate this?.
,Why do people latch onto the superficial aspects of other startups?1. Startup names are becoming annoyingly standardized. You basically take a word that relates to your industry then ad –ly or instead turn it into a verb by adding –ify at the end. Yet these aspects are completely independent of the startup’s success. Instead why don’t people try and come up with a name that is short, easy to remember, intuitive to spell, and descriptive of what the company is about. That might actually affect your success as a startup.

2. FORGET VIRALITY! When I was a freshman in college I uploaded a video to youtube that received 20k views in a week and millions by the months end. I got calls from all the major “funny video” websites and ended up selling to collegehumor.com (~$400), which was a mistake since a week later I got a call from ABC who was interested and offered 3k. The point is the more viral you are the more prone you are to fizzle out faster. The whole ordeal lasted less than a few months. IMO “Virality” and virality coefficients are a waste of time if you want to actually build a business. Spend the time you would improving your viral score and build a better/more useful product.

3. Do you really need a mobile app? There are plenty of industries in which a mobile app would serve no purpose except wasting the time and resources of the developers.

4. A/B testing is a waste of time. Instead use that time building a better product! Craigslist/Google, for instance, has barely changed any of their layout/design. Good developers spend time improving their core product and doing things that are important/matter, not testing the effectiveness of different font colors.

,I made a “programming language” based on Cobol syntaxFirst of all, I'm sorry. I'm deeply sorry.

A few months ago, talking with some friends, we had the idea of developing a programming language just for the sake of it. We talked a little about it, design by committee got out of control and, a few days later, we abandoned the project completely without having written a single line of code.

I, though, have wanted to make a programming language my whole life and thus I kept trying to push the project forward by myself. I created a syntax loosely based on that of COBOL, made the worst compiler possible, wrote a somewhat slow "virtual machine" and released LDPL (ldpl.lartu.net) as a joke. Even the name is a pun on older, business oriented languages with BIG-CAPITAL-LETTER-NAMES. Again, like COBOL.

Fast forward a little and the joke got out of control.

I kept working on the language on my free time - pushing the not-very-ortodox but easy to code compiler forward - and the language got pretty usable. I mean, it's not a language you'd like to work with. It can't do everything. It's quite slow. It doesn't have any scoping nor functions (it does have sub-procedures, though) nor lambdas nor objects nor fancy data structures. Think of it more of an esolang than a serious language.

But what it lacks in efficiency and features, it makes up by having a cute dinosaur logo (poorly drawn as a joke on other mascots like the GCC gnu), unicode support, a full standard, comprehensive documentation, fancy examples and a half-written tutorial to be finished in the next days. It's also very portable, with binaries available for Linux amd-64 and ARMv8, Windows 64 bits and even Mac OS X for PowerPC processors!

So, if you are curious, bored or want to try something useless and new, I invite you to visit ldpl.lartu.net, download the LDPL source code or grab a precompiled binary for your operating system and code away.

It's a phrase I've used maybe twice on my own site, but numbers of times have I talked about it, and how it's a destructive practice for the end-user. Forward Metablogging is a type of blogging or in other instances of user interaction where instead of linking them directly to a website being reviewed or discussed, you forward them to another article on the same site, about the same topic.

Example: TechCrunch's article about ClickPass(http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/03/11/clickpass-could-change-the-way-you-surf-the-web/) doesn't directly reference ClickPass until the third paragraph, but however has the site logo affixed next to the first. Software developers should be familiar with what a perceived affordance is. If a user sees a radio button, they expect it to perform like a radio button and perform the task it says it will do.

That said, you click the ClickPass button, and it takes you to another page also operated by the TechCrunch team that holds no value to a user expecting to see this ClickPass site in action.

Other sites like Technorati, CNet, even CNN do this type of 'bait and switch' all the time. Even links with the title of a web app or website placed directly between <a> and </a> never take you to the site itself, but to more blogs.

If software performed like this, the exodus to web applications would be monumental. All of that said and keeping relevant to YC themes, from a usability front do you think forward metablogging is a good practice for users to experience who plan on running blogs based on their startups and business ideas for fear they may inadvertently do it themselves and ruin the experience of their applications?.
