today you're going to learn how to set
up a doobie illustrator for Luger, designs that utilize a grid and then I'm
going to show you some tips and some, tricks for creating awesome logo designs
in combination with grids sponsoring, today's video is milla notes the best
place to plan and streamline your next, graphic design project Millie note
allows you to generate ideas and, concepts with ease and then to evolve
those creations to final design, solutions as you probably know I use
millionnaire myself for my design, projects and you can learn more about
their awesome project planning software, later in today's video and just how
helpful milliner can be for your, creative design process so before we
actually design our logos we of course, need a grid to work with today as you
might have guessed we're working in, Adobe Illustrator and illustrator does
have a great built in grid and we can, use this as a base for our designs you
can make the grid visible by coming into, the view options and then selecting show
grids however there are various, different settings that you need to be
aware of when utilizing this grid now, firstly I find it useful to use pixels
as their ruler measurements and you can, right click the rulers to change the
measurements used it's also useful to, turn off this snap to pixel grid option
as this can distort your selection and, navigation as I've shown in previous
videos, now if we zoom into illustrator you're
gonna notice that each large square on, my grid is equal to 50 pixels this is my
personal preference and it does change, depending on the logo I'm designing but
by defaults I think illustrator uses 72, pixels per square which I find just
causes issues when calculating distances, now you can adjust these settings in the
Preferences window here and I also have, each small square equal to 10 pixels
within the larger 50 pixel square so, again this is entirely up to you and
what you want to use for your setup now, another setting that you want to be
aware of is the snap to grid function, this can be both very useful and also
very annoying depending on your design, and what you're doing but if I turn it
off and then I go to make a rectangle, you can see that the dimensions move
freely around the are boards now with a, grid function activated my shape stick
directly to each grid square on the line, so you just think about what you want to
be using for your logo design and you, might want to switch this on and off
throughout the entire project so now, you've set up your grid for a logo
designing let's delve into some really, useful and handy tips when a grid is
used from the very start of a logo, design project scaling and then
modifying the logo becomes a lot easier, in the latter stages of the projects
also a logo needs to stay consistent, even after years and years of changes so
having things precise on a grid is, really useful the grid line is still
helped to provide some consistency to, the logo design and as a quick example
I've got a symbol here that I briefly, made up and you can see that it's two
large squares thick which on my outboard, is 100 pixels, now if I open up the transform window I
can type in 50% for the height and the, width of my logo and this will prove
that one large square is half of my, design now this is how a grid is useful
for scaling because you can judge and, calculate proportions for your designs
based on the grid alone the next tip is, to try and use geometric shapes as much
as possible on your grid and logo, designs I'm going to explain why soon
but quickly to demonstrate I have the, ellipse tool selected here and if I hold
down both the alt option and the shift, key and then click and drag I can
generate a circle that snaps to each, grid line from the center
I can then copy this we command or, control C and then paste it in place
with command or control F it's then just, a matter of repeating the process to end
up with three circles, I can then select all three circles and
then duplicate them by holding down the, alt/option key and clicking and dragging
the layout that you use for your shapes, will depend on the logo design of course
but for some greater detail let's now, take the pencil and draw one single
horizontal line, I can then duplicate it with the
alt/option key and then press command or, control D to repeat the process and
downwards so for the next step you can, either select everything and then use
the divide function in the Pathfinder, window or you can use the shape builder
tool located here by default the shape, builder tool is going to unite shapes
together as you can see the plus icon, above your cursor so carefully click and
drag over your selections uniting parts, that you want to use and I'm gonna make
a very crude and a very random logo, symbol that probably is gonna look ugly
but it's just a demonstration purpose, and then to remove excess shapes hold
down the alt/option key and then drew, over those areas that you don't want to
be used on your design you will then be, left with a solid shape for your lego
mark now using geometric shapes isn't, just quicker than drawing things
yourself but you're guaranteed a crisp, and a precise outcome so the next point
is something I've spoken about my, channel before and that is not falling
for mathematical systems one of the most, common systems is a golden ratio but
perfect geometry doesn't always appeal, to the human eye and actually the golden
ratio has been debunked many many times, the mathematics for it actually are
impossible to recreate because a decimal, point is never ending
and also the Apple logo has been, debunked because it doesn't even come
that close to the golden ratio, mathematically speaking but the point
here is that you shouldn't restrict your, creativity and the possibilities for
your Lego by complying to a strict, mathematical system that has actually
flawed anyway but yeah big thanks to, million-eight for sponsoring today's
video I really do highly recommend it, and I've been using it for nearly two
years now myself you can easily, streamline your creative process from
start to finish on any project that, you're working on but also it's very
easy to share your ideas and your, projects with other clients or even
worth colleagues so yeah do check out, the links down below for more
information on milla notes and start, streamlining your creative design
process in a more efficient way today so, there was a look at how to set up a grid
for your Lego designs and then to go, further there on some tips and some
points that you want to keep in mind, when designing a logo with a great
system do you use grids on your Lego, designs please do you let me know down
below, of course if you're Nikki learning is
sensual and useful skills as a graphic, designer

videos on social media and until next, time guys design your future today

A Critical History of Logo and Constructionist Learning,Ask HN: How can I make a “kid's computer” today as good as an Apple II?When I was a kid, I had an Apple II with a BASIC interpreter, Print Shop Pro to make really cool cards and banners, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego to learn about geography, Pinball Construction Set, Number Munchers, Oregon Trail, and LOGO for programming the turtle.
Today I can't see a way of giving my kids a computer like that, where there are a lot of open-ended ways to create. The iPad games are too directly educational, or mindless, and great creative experiences don't seem available on desktop or iPad suitable for early elementary schoolers.
Any suggestions here? I will be happy to pay $..

,Ask HN: promoting and positioning very early stage web apps?I'll put the 'TL/DR' version up front: When following the 'it's never too early to launch' philosophy, how do you position the application to visitors or potential customers?
I hear PG and others saying often that you can't really launch too soon; that you should launch as soon as your app is remotely useful; in fact that if you were not uncomfortable with the state of the product when you first launched you waited too long.
I've done that, launching the first iteration site of a site in the past week. While the feedback (quite limited so far) is helpful and interesting, frankly I am a bit uncomfortable with the state of the product. The site has some utility but it should be obvious to anyone who spends any time on there that this product is in what I'd consider a pre-beta state. It's not that the site is buggy or that there are dead ends or 'coming soon' links or anything like that. The features that exist in the live version are relatively polished. It's just that the site is clearly 'light' on features and content.
I want the feedback from having my application live, but I'm afraid my app isn't complete enough yet to justify promoting it very much. But without promotion I won't get much feedback.
(One answer is laboratory style user testing, paper prototyping and the like, but I could have (and to a limited extent, did) do that without launching. I believe there's something valuable about the real world context, but I'm not entirely comfortable with the initial impression I'm giving to visitors.)
So, how do you position a very early phase site with customers/visitors/users? I guess we could slap a 'beta' sticker on the logo, but that feels like the modern equivalent the 'under construction' digging guy from the 90s--it indicates 'broken and likely to stay that way' as much as 'early stage and dynamically improving'. Besides, is 'beta' is just a term of art for our industry? Does the public at large relate to 'beta' in a meaningful way? I'm not sure my target market does.
Is there a way to say 'yes, we know it is lame right now but just you wait and see' without turning off potential users or looking unprofessional? Is there a way to send a strong enough message to invite the public at large to check out the site without setting them up to say, 'lame, call me back when it's ready?'.

,A Startup’s Most Valuable Asset: The TeamStartup ventures are exciting, dynamic, and risky. They require a balance between luck, skill, and timing. Of all the essential elements regarding startup businesses, there is one particular element that remains paramount: the team members.
For many “financially-deficient” (aka bootstrapped) startups, choosing the correct team members/founders may be the most important decision the young company faces. Despite this truth, it is all too common for startups to constuct their team with insufficient or unsuitable candidates. This type of behavior is not just harmful, it’s potentially deadly for a young upstart business.
I see many startups invest most of their focus on things like: marketing strategies, business name / logo, and market position — before ever really considering the composition of their startup members. The fundamental problem with this is simple: idea and strategies mean nothing with the wrong people in the driver seat. It is critical to place the correct individuals in the correct positions in order to achieve maximum efficiency. This becomes difficult as a startup begins developing ideas and executing particular strategies.
Here are a few aspects to consider when constructing your startup’s fouding team.
Is your friend the “right” choice? Friends are the easiest and most convenient individuals to bring aboard your startup venture. Friendly conversation does not necessarily translate into smart business tactics, however. Your friend may be a great person to bounce ideas off of, but not the right business partner. Take advantage of your friend status and mentally project them into a startup role. From all that you know about that person, think about a few scenarios:
* how well do they handle stressful situations?
* do they possess perseverance or do they stop at the first sign of hardship?
* are they trustworthy?
* how well do they communicate?
* how do they handle uncertainty or chaotic situations?
* what is their level of dedication or passion towards projects?
No money, no problem. Lack of cash is often considered a major startup obstacle. And while this may be true in most circumstances, it does provide an indirect benefit in the case of bringing aboard team members. Startups with little to no working capital are fueled by one thing: passion. Bringing aboard individuals with no promise of monetary compensation ensures that they are in it for all the right reasons. You can worry about salary and payroll after you ship your first unit.
Previous entrepreneurs welcome. There are certain intangibles one learns from operating inside the trenches of a startup company that cannot be learned anywhere else. This is why you should always look to bring aboard previous entrepreneurs given the chance. The company benefits greatly from the individuals’ prior startup experience and you gain a trusted business partner who understands the difficulty associated with launching a business venture.
The most important point to remember is this: your startup’s most valuable asset is its team members…so choose your partners wisely! Remember that at the end of the day, you and your team are the ones putting the ideas and strategies in place. It’s not enough to have an idea, you need the physical manpower to execute them effectively. A founding team needs to have the right balance of intelligence, innovation, and drive. In order to achieve the correct balance, your team members must share a common passion while working towards shared goals.
trueventures-teammembersI saw a great affirmation of this belief when I came across a particular venture capital firm’s website, and noticed their portfolio companies. True Ventures, an early stage tech venture firm, showcases their portfolio companies in a refreshing way. If you notice, all of their investments are accompanied with a picture of the founding team. Although it is just a picture, it establishes the old investment addage of: “We invest in individuals, not companies.” This is something that we as entrepreneurs hear, but sometimes overlook..
,Looking for CoFounder / 2cents?My name Will. I am 23. I live in LA. Going to school for marketing but also thinking about dropping out to join a startup or CREATE a startup. Im in the process of gathering advice. Im an aspiring entrepreneur! Not the 'idea man'. I dont have a get rich quick idea. Looking for someone who is willing to hear out my ideas and work with someone who believes in them or meet someone to tell me im a f*ing idiot. Anything works.
So, read below to check out projects I've worked on in the past or are currently working on now.
I am constantly thinking of ways to better the world and make certain things in life less complicated or constructive for the mass.
Ive been passionately trying to start a business since I was 18...and failed or pivoted many times. This is the order in which they have originated from.
I am still working on a few of them! Looking to hash them out more with other Entrepreneurs that believe in my vision or engineers that would like to assist in wire framing or designing beta sites/apps.
1st idea - MealDealz: Dining deals. Coupons and discounts for all the popular restaurants and fast food places. Now there are many alike.
2nd idea - MiServices: Directed toward younger individuals trying to make money on the side walking dogs or putting up christmas lights, etc but would like to be accredited through ratings. Something better than Craigslist but you're not licensed so you can't technically be on Angies list or Yelp.
3rd idea - Readr: Discover and share books you love and start a book club online. Have authors start a book club for their new releases, or fans start one. Now alike Goodreads.
4th idea - Betsy: make bets online and through our application with others on any topic from the Tech world, Entertainment, Sports, Politics, etc. Earn points, humblebrag and use the points to get cool rewards.
5th idea - standUP: organize all the online campaigns into one place. Enlighten people on common issues and how to take action through either petitions to congress, sharing the message or supporting the cause, etc. Show all the trending topics currently going on: Occupy Wall Street, GunControl, Internet Control, Oil Spill, Education, War on Drugs, etc. Then the main objective would be to help people establish their standpoint on the issue by showing all the different points of views and how they could easily take action all in one simple organized application. The app would be like the One campaign app.
Plus many other ideas! But these are the ones that I've either already worked on or are currently working on.
I am fascinated with the concept of building businesses, the surprises with successful marketing, and the power of social media and how much impact it has on the world.
I can assist in creating a business model. Assist in product design. Make Logo. Talk to potential customers, test design hypotheses. Figure out sales and marketing strategy, find beta users, warm up early adopters, performance tracking, online profiles, help create a blog. Research. Checking up on competitors and how they do business. Or help collectively create a meaningful mission statement explaining why we give this service/product.
Any advice works. Contact me:

,Show HN: Simple, collaborative learningI'm a long time HN lurker, and wanted to show a side project that I recently started working on that I think has some merit.
If you're an avid learner who is working on lots of different topics at any given time, as I know most HN folks are, you know that keeping track of what you are learning, the resources (books, tutorials, articles, courses, etc), and your progress along the way is difficult to do. LearnTribe solves this problem by providing a social way to organize and track your learning efforts.
I'd especially appreciate some honest, but constructive criticism about the concept and implementation. Note that the site is lacking a real design treatment (mood, colors, logo, etc) and needs a look at UX. I'm hunting for a design partner to take the project to the next level..
