[Applause], [Music], so after months of planning the design, contest is finally happening and huge, thanks to millennial for making it, possible stick around to learn how you, can participate and win up to a thousand, dollars, [Music], i'm currently working on a branding, project for a cafe in canada and i, wanted to walk you through my design, process so that you could get some, inspiration and ideas from it, [Music], this will also give you a deeper insight, into a real life design project and help, you understand how you communicate with, the client and hopefully it would also, serve as a good example for the kind of, approach you should take in the upcoming, design contest my goal with this is to, help you better prepare and understand, how to tackle a real design project so i, want to share as much of my work i can, with you and hopefully host these design, contests on a regular basis to make this, learning process a lot more interactive, [Music], so coming back to our project i'll just, start by saying that i don't have a, fixed routine that i always follow my, process usually adapts to the project, i'm working on but what's common every, time in each of my project is miller, note i use it to write the briefs do my, research make a tutorial list upload my, sketches and get real-time feedback from, my client and over the years i've become, really dependent on melanoma for, organizing my design projects so this is, my main dashboard and these are all my, ongoing projects and i'm currently, working on a branding project for a cafe, called floof usually what happens is the, send out are brief and we have a few, discussions over called we go back and, forth a couple of times and this gives, me a better understanding of the brand, and the goals i send over a, questionnaire and based on all of that i, create a brief and this brief will sit, on my main board, i'll just drag down a note on an empty, board give it a heading and type out the, information and i usually divide these, on separate cards first is a description, of the brand a few lines to explain who, they are and what they sell, next are not profiling who the primary, target audience is and you could also, include a user persona in here, then i'll make a list of emotions that's, attached to the brand and this usually, helps me set the tone for the design, i'll also do a bit of research and drag, in the links to the competitors so in, this case it would be cafes in that data, who are also selling fluffy cheesecake, these are usually the parameters that i, start with and you could add more if you, require, finally i'll group all of these into a, column to organize it better, you have the ability to add your client, to the project as well and it's just, safe to get an approval on the brief you, have created before you move on, once i've jotted down and organized all, the details it's time to move on to mood, boarding my go to sites of pinterest, dribble behance and instagram i usually, spend a couple of days just going, through a bunch of designs and curating, the ones that best fit the brand once, you're satisfied with the board the next, step is sketching you can minimize your, browser take a break and grab yourself a, drink before you move on, all my thoughts are running, running around inside my head emotions, keep coming, they're keeping me from thinking, straight thought it would be different, when i got my things in place, while you're typing down the brief or, putting together your mood board a lot, of new ideas will start to form and the, best way to bring those ideas to life is, by transferring them to rough sketches, this will help you better visualize the, final product, i don't think we got it, i tried to change the things you never, liked try to make this better make this, right but we're the same, [Music], after i have my concept sketches ready i, added to my millinode board and shared, with my client i get the feedback and, the thoughts and then proceed to, vectorize it they had also sent some, concepts for the interior of the cafe, and wanted the design to fit seamlessly, into it taking that into consideration i, went with a playful and pastel look but, at the same time maintaining a bit of, sophistication to not make it look too, kiddish, adapt even if i changed, everything except my name is, [Music], so these are some individual vectors, that are designed based on the sketches, and i'm gonna send this over to the, client while i wait for the feedback let, me just quickly tell you about the, design contest, so it's a brand design challenge and it, will have two rounds round one will be, logo design and the shortlisted, finalists to move on to the second round, will be required to make additional, brand assets around that logo it's, sponsored by and hosted on miller note, you already know that i use middle note, for all my design projects and it's just, amazing to partner with them for this, contest millionaire is a web app that, allows you to organize projects from, start to finish on interactive visual, boards with simple drag and drop, interface they have prevail templates, for logo brief mood boards and a I want to give you a bit of information on why this is so important to new start-ups, and how this issue personally affected me. I am sure you have also come across this problem many times.

Three months ago I purchased a domain name for a startup venture. I have created a launch page, made business cards, created a logo; I have already accumulated a lot of signups in 3 weeks time and done a bit of marketing. I even have a few customers already.

Today I received a totally random email from a guy who is the owner of a very similar domain name. He has sent me a cease and desist letter, because apparently he owns the trademark. I have double-checked this on the USPTO website and everything seems legit.

However what estranges me is the fact that he has not setup a business. He bought the domain in 2010 to setup a company and I believe he quit before he launched. Now he made me an offer to sell the trademark and the domain name, or else desist from using the name. I did not ask him how much he wants for this, because I am sure it will be some crazy 6-digit figure that I will not be able to afford.

Now I have to change my business name.

I am lucky that my startup is still new and I haven't spent a fortune on marketing. Imagine if this was a year down the line... Many founders don't have the flexibility to change names, so they have to pay up.

So dear people from HN, could we please spread out the message on why this is so wrong! Every single time I go to a domain registrar, I can't use 90% of the names, because these domain leechers bought everything to make a profit..
,Ask HN: A large community owner is trying to strong-arm us. What should I do?I am the founder of StartGlobal https://startglobal.co/ where we help anyone incorporate a business in the US, get EIN, bank account, phone number, and address. Recently we’ve been experiencing delays from IRS to get the EIN. IRS was shut down and they are slowly getting back to speed.

Even though it was not our mistake, I think it was our responsibility. At first, I tried to design some beautiful logos for the client to keep them happy. By this time we already finished the incorporation process at the state and registered agent.

When the EIN delay was going beyond expectations, I agreed to do a full refund without taking any cut (after issuing a full refund, we were at a loss because we already paid for registered agent, filings, state fee, even out of pocket logo design). I then sent the following email taking the blame and issuing a full refund.

I've issued a full refund, you should have an email with details. You may keep the fully incorporated company, registered agent service paid for 1 year, and the EIN application set to IRS and the logo we did. I am really sorry you had to go through this experience, and greatly appreciate your patience until now. I truly understand your situation and I'd be no different. But please be aware that this was not the experience I hoped for, and I hope you forgive me for wasting your time.

Now after the refund, the client asked us for some edits in the logo and also to work again on the EIN followup with IRS and see if we can get it, and we did it on a good faith that client might pay after we get it. After many followups with the IRS, we were able to finally get the EIN and when I asked the client if they’d like to continue the process and pay us, he is saying he’d like the EIN for free because I “promised” to get him everything for free. He is a founder member of a large startup community and being an early-stage company I am afraid if this will affect our reputation if we don't do this. What should we do?.
,Why do people latch onto the superficial aspects of other startups?1. Startup names are becoming annoyingly standardized. You basically take a word that relates to your industry then ad –ly or instead turn it into a verb by adding –ify at the end. Yet these aspects are completely independent of the startup’s success. Instead why don’t people try and come up with a name that is short, easy to remember, intuitive to spell, and descriptive of what the company is about. That might actually affect your success as a startup.

2. FORGET VIRALITY! When I was a freshman in college I uploaded a video to youtube that received 20k views in a week and millions by the months end. I got calls from all the major “funny video” websites and ended up selling to collegehumor.com (~$400), which was a mistake since a week later I got a call from ABC who was interested and offered 3k. The point is the more viral you are the more prone you are to fizzle out faster. The whole ordeal lasted less than a few months. IMO “Virality” and virality coefficients are a waste of time if you want to actually build a business. Spend the time you would improving your viral score and build a better/more useful product.

3. Do you really need a mobile app? There are plenty of industries in which a mobile app would serve no purpose except wasting the time and resources of the developers.

4. A/B testing is a waste of time. Instead use that time building a better product! Craigslist/Google, for instance, has barely changed any of their layout/design. Good developers spend time improving their core product and doing things that are important/matter, not testing the effectiveness of different font colors.

,Ask HN: How do you feel about .io ccTLD used for US web-app?I have spent a good year developing a great web app for programmers (in the US). I asked a few SEO 'experts' if a .io domain would have an effect on my ranks. I got a unanimous reply: 'no.' So I bought a really great name.
After all is said and done, and I do some research myself, (naturally) I see that it DOES in fact affect rankings, as it's not considered a gTLD.

I've tried doing some googling, and it's difficult due to the short 'io' keyword, but I have a few questions.

I'm wondering how this will affect me trying to make my app popular in the US (ranking wise). I find it frustrating because .io is so popular among 'tech apps' due to its input/output connotation.

1. Do you think theres any hope for this being moved to a gTLD?

2. Do you think in general I should just stick it out and try to keep going? (I have already designed my logo, and everything about my app, around this domain)

3. I read the following on a blog post I found. Can anyone shed some light on if this is relevant?

Also, aren't TLDs going to be opened wide-up soon? So, that makes gTLD, rTLD and gccTLD stuff less relevant?'.
,6 things that could ruin Twitter (and 5 that won't) 1. Buying friends. CNN announced Friday that it had acquired @CNNBrk, a Twitter feed that serves up links to CNN breaking news stories. Now that people are rewarded for selling followers, an entire underground economy will probably emerge. Perps will use dirty tricks to build a large number of followers, then sell those accounts to big corporations. The end result will be a large number of accounts that suddenly turn into sources of Twitter spam, and a large number of users who feel they've been tricked.

2. Username squatting. When I started following @CNNBrk, I thought I was following CNN itself. I didn't learn until yesterday that it was just some dude who grabbed the CNNBrk name, copied the CNN logo and served up links to CNN content. CNN's acquisition of @CNNBrk showed everyone that username squatting on Twitter pays. Expect to see millions of people signing up using trademarked IP, hoping to cash in later.

3. Forgetting to grow a business model. The trouble with not making money is that Twitter won't be able to keep up with demand. Which means more fail whales, slowdowns and problems. (The fail whale is a picture that's displayed on Twitter when the system breaks, usually because of excess activity.)

4. Invasive advertising. Ads on Twitter would be OK. Paying to not see ads would be OK, too. But ads that cover the screen or otherwise delay posts could harm Twitter badly. Twitter is about speed and brevity. Big ads that are fine elsewhere won't work on Twitter.

5. Spam. The good news about Twitter is that everything is instantly searchable. The bad news is that everything is instantly searchable. Stories abound about a user whining about some product only to receive a quick e-mail from the company they complained about.

Companies are using Twitter's great search tools to find out in real time what people are saying about them. This could all be further automated. I'd hate to see an entire ecosystem forming around the triggering of spam to your e-mail in-box every time you tweet something. This spam could also be used as a form of 'punishment' that stifles criticism. Another form of spam is unwanted ads sent as direct messages. Once this is automated, our direct-message in-boxes could be filling up with garbage. Spam ruined e-mail, and it could ruin Twitter.

6. Bugs and viruses. Twitter allows links, and links could send you to the same kind of sites and trigger the same kinds of downloads that initiate the downloading of Trojan horses onto your system. Twitter needs to stay on top of this before it becomes an industry.

5 things that wont!

1. Celebrity culture. Sure, Oprah and Ashton now dominate the Twittersphere. But to say celebrity tweets, celebrity gossip and celebrity trash-talk will ruin Twitter is to not understand the very nature of the service. Twitter is the one form of communication where you can individually choose who you listen to. This is different from, say, comments on Digg or even articles in the newspaper, where you have to wade through muck to find gold. Sure, we'll be hearing more than we want to hear about celebrities on Twitter. But we'll be hearing about it on TV, in blogs, and in magazines and newspapers. Those are the things that will be ruined by celebrity twittering. But on Twitter itself, we can just turn that stuff off.

2. Media hype. Twitter is overexposed in the media. But that just wrecks media, not Twitter. There is no such thing as unwanted communication on Twitter. If you chose to follow someone, by definition you want what they tweet.

3. Marketing and PR. Again, missing the point. Twitter will be great for people who want to get marketing information and interact with PR people (I'm one of them. I'd much prefer to tweet with PR people than exchange e-mail). But for those who don't, they can just stop following. And because of that, Twitter rewards marketers who communicate in a straightforward and appealing way and punishes anyone who uses some kind of exploitation. The marketing industry and Twitter will improve each other.

4. Big business. As Twitter's usage grows, of course, companies are going to build massive followings by doing things like raffling off expensive goods to followers. But this won't affect your own personal tweets any more than McDonald's ads affect how you make dinner. Corporations will be over there doing their thing, and you'll be over here doing yours. It only affects you if you choose to participate.

5. Google. OK, Google could ruin Twitter. But I don't think it will (if it acquires Twitter). Google would most likely grow the service even more rapidly, and keep its functionality pretty much the way it is, as they have done with other acquisitions. Plus, there are many ways Google could improve Twitter, including integrating it into Profiles, Chat and Gmail.

So if you're a Twitter user, enjoy its many great qualities while they last, because they may not. However, if the geniuses running Twitter remain faithful to the original vision (as other companies like, say, Craigslist, have done), then Twitter might stay great and become even greater..
