How to Save $5000 on Your LogoEntrepreneur, author, and musician Jim Leff argues that creative types aren't always that creative and that it's better to come up with a rough idea and have them tweak it than to go to them with a blank slate..
,Ask HN: Is Google's VDay logo an eye sore or am I missing something?Usually, I love Google's special edition logos that celebrate special dates. They are creative, and beautiful. But for today's valentines logo it seems like they really phoned it in. The color scheme is really off putting. But, it is hard for me to believe that they would do something of such poor quality so I'm left wondering if I'm missing something. Is there something special about the color scheme that justifies its usage? Could it be colorblind safe color combinations? (even still cant they find color blind safe colors that look good?).
,The Most Powerful Colors in the World ...And How You Make The Next OnesAs a YC W10 startup, we were lucky to have dinner with Zuckerberg and I asked him afterwards why he chose that blue for Facebook... Cause he's color blind. Not a majestic response about how color influences mood, buying habits, etc.

He used a color that was personally best for him. And a lot of the top brands in the world now, started in garages & workshops... where the branding research consisted of a couple rounds 'what if we...' before a name was born and then a logo & design.

My favorite example of this is Mercedes. The brand now stands for luxury cultivates a significant vibe... but why did the founder call it that? Simply, he named the company after his daughter... and now people name their daughters after the car!

A lot of YC companies get greif for their names (most.ly the ly.ly ones) but how much does a name / brand have on the actual product being successful.

I think it can have an influence, but at the end of the day... the quality of what you build will determine its success.

With that in mind, my fellow hackers & founders... from a guy that runs a website about color... Be more adventurous with your colors. Have some fun..
,Tell HN: Your startup's blog should have a link to your homepageYour startup's blog should have a link to your homepage.

It seems obvious, right? But three or four times now I've read a post at some startup's blog and got interested in what they do, but I couldn't quickly get to their homepage – there was no link!

Make your logo link to your main site. Don't make it link to nothing and don't make it link to the first page of your blog. I am usually interested enough to hack the url, but it shouldn't be that hard.

(I was prompted to write this after reading the Heroku blog post about instant deployment and not being able to get to their homepage. But like I said this is definitely not the first time I've seen this.).
,Ask HN: "Fair Use" of Magazine Logos?Hi,

Our organization makes free software, and recently 'Product X' was reviewed and given the 'Editor's Choice' award by PC Magazine.

Seeing this, I placed their magazine logo linking back to the review on our download page, alongside the badges of other download awards we've been given in the past.

I was contacted barely 24 hours later by Ziff Davis Media legal, and told that my use of the logo was not Fair Use and I had to license their editor's choice award logo for $1250 per year.

I'm no lawyer, but I honestly feel that this is fair use? I'm using their logo to link back to their site - does anyone know if this is not allowed?

BTW, the PC Magazine review used our product, screenshots of our product, and more without letting us know they were doing a review let alone asking for our permission. Can someone explain the logic in this to me? And on their site, they have the screenshot of Product X alongside the 'PC Magazine Editor's Choice' logo.

I'm sure anyone reading this can figure out 'our organization' and 'Product X' but whatever..
,UX Rule #2 - Always Link Your Header Logo,Suggest HN: Standard file locations for website infoIt would be nice, for automation, to standardize information locations.

For example, the standard logo for a company could always be at http://website.com/images/logo.png Perhaps there could be multiple sizes of logos that are standard as well.

You could also have contact information always at /contact or /contactus

I'm not so concerned about the actual urls as I am the desire to start a convention like this that we can all use moving forward. How many times have we pasted a link to our logo or uploaded our logo? Or a company asked for it for an article or testimonial, etc...

If we could just specify a base url to grab the information, from any service we choose pretty much, then life would be a lot easier for us all..
,How I launched flickrup.com in less than two weeksPlease Note: the point of this post is not to pitch my site, but rather to provide some of the lessons learned and hopefully spark some interesting discussion.

Flickrup allows people to submit flickr photos and vote on them.

The idea with Flickrup! was to launch a working, stable site as fast as possible. The idea I had when I started working on the site was to be as minimalist as possible in regards to design, code complexity (frontend and backend), db schema design and user authentication to name a few. I also wanted it to be ridiculously easy to submit and vote on photos. So here are some of the things I did.

frontend design:

I used a css framework (blueprint) to assist in creating a grid based layout and also utilized all the predefined styles for elements. Instead of creating my own css classes and ending up with a cluttered mess, I forced my self to use the classes defined in blueprint as often as possible.

I didn't waste time making a logo. The logo is simply a text link to the frontpage.

I didn't clutter the frontpage with flashy css based buttons and login/signup links everywhere. Instead, when someone hovers over a vote link, a css popup comes up which allows them to vote anonymously or using the flickr account.

I didn't waste time setting up a blog for the site.

backend design:

No brainer: I used a well known php framework (codeigniter) and forced myself to use as many classes and helpers they had to offer including: (pagination, session control, url helper, captcha, date helper)

I had a problem that needed some solvin' and I was greatly tempted to roll my own solution, but I searched until I found an already existing one.

Database:

I have four tables. That's it. Photos, sessions, users and votes.

Authentication:

There isn't an ugly login/signup link to be found on the frontpage and it doesn't need one. Logging in is inconspicuously placed in the flow of voting and submitting.

You don't have to sign up to use the service. You can vote and submit anonymously. It's true that you can vote for a photo as many times as you want as an anonymous user, but so what? If someone wants to spend their precious time painstakingly figuring out the captcha a dozen times to fluf their votes, who cares?.
,Ask HN: Please re-review my webapp: PlaylistrThe last version seemed to be fairly well-received, but it wasn't satisfied with it, yet. Since I last posted about it, I've made a few changes. The most obvious would be the interface. I'm not sure if anyone who commented on my previous thread has seen the new interface, but it's much easier on the eyes.

Most of the changes are on the backend, but are ones I'm sure a lot of you would appreciate. I've added a proper admin panel, so adding new streams is a snap. (Feel free to request some!) I've also made the playlists generate with titles, so they won't show up in your media player as a list of ugly IP addresses and hostnames. They also use CRLF now, instead of just LF.

You may also login (link is under the logo) using your Google account and your selections will be saved for you, then restored on your next visit.

,YC banner exchangeWe're currently working on a simple ad tracking system for in-house ad sales at POPrl. However, before we roll out the new ad system i wanted to give an opportunity for two startups to grab ad spots while we work out the kinks. The ads will run for at least one month and should generate decent leads. The requirements are as follows

# Ad size has to be 125 by 125 pixels
# Simple ads with limited to no animation
# The company and/or logo should be used
# Has to link back to your company product page

If you can manage those criteria, shoot me an e-mail with the banner and the link back address. I'll take the top two submission. You can find out more about POPrl at http://poprl.com

,Ask HN: Do you have a "Home" link in your main navigation?I'm considering excluding the 'Home' link from a new website to keep the main navigation clean. I plan on using the website logo in the upper left corner in place of the 'Home' link, which seems to be a commonly accepted practice these days.

Is the Home link still useful in a modern web ui or is it a relic of the past?

I hope Jakob Nielsen isn't reading this :)..

,How we fed ourselves for a year & sold a startup...with only 300 lines of codeHello Hacker News,

I’ve been reading HN for a long time now and love the way the community shares thoughts with each other. I haven’t done anything extraordinary or extremely successful, but I want to chip in to the community with this experience that I find pretty interesting.

A year ago, I moved to San Francisco from rural Missouri hoping to join the start-up world. At the same time, I met a friend, Zac, who also just moved to the bay area around that time but had left his job to pursue something more interesting. We decided to become partners and start hacking stuff together.

Since we were new to the city and we didn’t know any one, we decided to build a mobile app that lets people use their phone to read the profiles of others nearby. It was supposed to help people “break the ice” and meet new people. This was our first startup. We coded the product in a week and pushed the product live.

Once live, we got like 5 users, since no one really knew about it. To promote this product, we decided to target events, since we thought that events is where people would like to meet each other. We locked ourselves in a room and asked this question over and over: “What is something valuable we can provide to event organizers so that they can promote our product?”

Zac finally came up with an idea. He proposed that we could build a kiosk where attendees can type in their name, and a name badge would instantly print. Then the attendees would be integrated into our mobile app as well. At first, it sounded insanely dumb (what would my mom think if I told her that I moved 2000 miles away from home to print paper name badges?), and I laughed really hard. But after thinking about it, it seemed “cool”, and we gave it a try.

In a day of work, we wrote the software in 300 lines of code and tested it. We ordered a label printer from Dymo and hooked them up to a Dell Mini 10v netbook. After that was done, we contacted an event organizer, convinced him that our system wasn’t going to fail, and asked if we could print name badges for him.

The event organizer let us try out our system, and that night turned out to be amazing. People thought it was the coolest thing ever to type their name in a laptop and instantly have a name badge print out. At the end of the night, we handed out lots of cards and got lots of people to try our mobile app. It was the first time in my life that there was “buzz” around something I created.

We continued to hit events and print name badges. We bought more printers and lots and lots of labels. We bought a huge travel suitcase to hold everything, and we carried it everywhere to print name badges for events.

The experience was amazing. Not only did we get a lot of people to try our mobile app, but all the attendees thought it was the “coolest” gadget ever. I guess we essentially “engineered” our way into these $600 technology events for free. Many event organizers gave us the front-seats sponsor booth, without charging us a dollar. Some gave us free advertising banners at their events. Most importantly, everyone walked around with our logo on their shirt. We shook all their hands as they walked into the door. Advertising can’t get any better than that. We quickly got our mobile app into the hands of our users, and talked to more than 500+ directly.

Unfortunately, after a month passed, we realized that our initial mobile app wasn’t working. People didn’t want the product. They didn’t want to read profiles about people around them. The mobile app wasn’t useful.

Here’s the weird thing about start-ups: things just happen. Although our mobile app failed miserably, our little name badge printing system became insanely popular. Event organizers were begging us to print badges for them every time they had an event. They were referring us to their friends, and we were hitting events literally every day with our name badge printer. To cater for each event, we forked our original software (which was completely hard coded and not well thought through) way too many times.

Just to name a few, we hit: TechCrunch events, Smash Summit, SF Music Tech, Future/Money Tech, ISA, Twitter events, FailCon/FailChat, TEDxSoma. You can see some pictures here: http://imhello.posterous.com/ .

Eventually, we got so many requests that we couldn’t go to all the events anymore. It was too much for us to handle. That’s when it finally hit us right on the forehead. This is what it’s like to build a product someone wants. Event organizers wanted to use our system. They’ll email you, call you, beg you, and tell their friends about you.

Since we were too overbooked, we decided to charge and up our product. We added EventBrite integration, customization, and polished it up a little. For every event, we would make around $50-$300 dollars (depending on the size and labor).

Soon, this little name badge printing software was now able to support me and my partner’s living expenses. And in the end, we sold the product to a small company. Although it was not an amazing multi-million dollar acquisition, it was an acquisition that gave us enough money to start another company.

The lesson we learned is that something so tiny as a “name badge printing machine” may seem silly and pointless at first, but it led to opportunities you can’t first predict. In our case, it fed us and turned into a small acquisition. We made lots of friends and great people while we were attending these events. Even our $10 Logitech keyboard was touched by many great CEOs and celebrities who came through us to get their name badges. We got completely free promotion and direct advertising.

I think that every startup has opportunities where they can be creative. Every startup can build something on the side and attach it to their product somehow. My advice is that if you find something “cool”, even if it’s small or trivial at first, take it for a spin before dropping it in the trash can. It might just spin into something that can help in the future.

After selling the name badge printing software, we decided to go back and pivot on our initial mobile app. Our new company is called View. View is a mobile app that “tells you what you need to know, wherever you are.” We’re really excited about this app because it’s very useful to our daily life.

We’re about to launch beta very soon. If you’d like to try it, go to http://view.io

Make sure you click the link above instead of typing it through the browser, so we can know you were referred from Hacker News and can give priority access.

Thanks for reading my story!
Felix

P.S. View is not in the App Store yet, but if you’d like to try the iPhone app as a beta tester, shoot me an email and tell me your city/state in the subject line: felix@view.io. We only have a limited number of invitations left, so I can’t guarantee that everyone can try it..
,Show HN: Free Satellite Broadcasts of Wikipedia and Project Gutenberg eBooksFor the last 6-months, we've been working on a way to offer free access to content that is normally found online. We are now live and broadcasting data to all of North America, Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East (it's an MVP, so a very tiny channel). By October we will be on 7 different satellites and will have full global coverage. The link and video below offers a quick overview on the components and process necessary to receive Outernet's signal. The video in the link shows the user's equipment and system in action. If you already have a Ku-band dish and receiver, you can see our blinking logo on Galaxy 19 and Hotbird.

North America: Galaxy 19 (97.0°W) 12,177 V 23,000 3/4nEurope: HotBird (13.0°E) 11,470 V 27,500 5/6

If you have a DVB-S tuner from the following list and a Raspberry Pi, the GitHub-page has instructions on how to put your own ORx (Outernet receiver) together.

https://www.outernet.is/pages/how-to

https://github.com/Outernet-Project/orx-install/blob/master/README.mkd

http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/DVB-S_USB_Devices

Note: this is not free internet access. The best technical description is free-to-air satellite IP multicast. Unlike commercial datacasting providers, our broadcast stream can be decoded by consumer-grade tuners and receivers. We are currently using a $40 Linux-friendly DVB-S tuner, Raspberry Pi, and $8 wifi dongle. Of course, a Ku-band dish and LNB are also needed, but these two pieces are locally available for $50 in basically every corner of the globe.

Our next project is to interface the DVB-S tuner directly with any hackable wifi router. Eventually, we hope to release a tuner/wifi router for less than $50..

Heres the link for the 'party' on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/event.php?eid=115542871807009&ref=ss

And its even got its own wikipeadia page!

Its now gone viral and it doesn't look like stopping anytime soon. Every minute over 500 people confirm their attendance. Fringe groups have also popped up with silly names. Join in!.
,Show HN: New flightlite.com release based on super HN feedbackTwo weeks ago I posted a link to my side project (http://flightlite.com) and got some great feedback from HNers.

I've spent a lot of time tweaking and improving based on that and I'm really happy with the result - it's much more usable and useful now!

What's better:

- reduced complexity of the main tracking page based on feedback from #veb

- new search functionality (auto-completion, blended all search types into one search box) - thanks #robyates for your input

- failover to large Google Maps view if Google Earth isn't installed with prompt and link to install from

- added a proper 404 page instead of just dying (ungracefully)

- trimmed anything I could get rid of without losing the core functionality

- new logo courtesy of a friend

- better titles/metadata and a sitemap for the search bots

- added arrivals/departure boards for airports

I hope you approve (and have even more feedback!)..
,Restoring your iPhone 3G to OS 3.1.3I had installed iOS4 on my iPhone 3G and saw it crawl to becoming an iPaperWeight. It was horribly slow in launching every app and the keyboard was so slow it was unusable.

I had to restore it back to 3.1.3.

spicyj gave me the starting point here:

http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1453553

I ran into a few problems, here is how I got it to work:

1) Download 3.1.3 firmware for iPhone 3G from http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/.

2) You have to put your phone in the appropriate DFU mode for downgrades. (Whatever DFU stands for).

Switch of your iPhone, connect the USB cable to your mac / PC and put it in DFU mode with following instructions - Click the Home + Power On button for 10 seconds exactly - Release the power button and continue to click on Home. The display should never turn on, but your iTunes should recognize the phone and warn you about recovery mode.

3) Option click the restore button and choose the 3.1.3 firmware you downloaded. Let it perform the recovery.

4) If it fails with an error 1015, click ok. The firmware is restored, but you have to snap the phone out of the recovery mode now.

5) Download iRecovery as explained in this link.

http://www.ihackintosh.com/2009/09/recover-iphone-3gs-from-apple-logo-or-recovery-mode-loop/

6) As explained there, copy the libusb-0.1.4.dylib to /usr/local/lib and give it executable permissions.

7) Run ./iRecovery -s from the extracted directory.

8) Set autoboot to true inside the iRecovery console:

setenv auto-boot

saveenvs

fsboot

9) I had to do fsboot thrice and nothing happened. It should have rebooted by now.

I did a power down and restarted the iPhone, and it was back up on 3.1.3 firmware.

If you run into problems or your phone is stuck in the recovery icon mode (USB port meets iTunes icon), please check out iRecovery and read all the possibilities there (there is a reboot command which might work, I didn't try it).

The downside to this is since my last iPhone backup was with iOS4, I could not restore it, I had to setup my phone as new. That is something I can live with.

Upside - the phone seems MUCH faster now ;)..
,Ask HN White-Label service: How do I go about it?I've been asked by a client to create a White-label service similar to an existing product I have. The service will have the client's logo on it. The customers they bring to the service wouldn't be customers I would get to my service so I'm not losing out. I will host the service and they will point their customers at it.

Questions:

* Is it okay to charge for development costs when enhancing your own product?

* Is it okay to put a link on the white-labelled site such as 'powered by mycompany'?

* What is a typical revenue split when providing a white label service?

* Or would it be more typical for me to charge the client a fixed monthly rate and they keep the revenue from the clients that use the service?.
,Computer Build TrackingSo I'm looking to create a website that helps novice builders (and even the more advanced ones) find parts that will interact well with each other. I just finished my third computer build in my life and I remember every single one was rife with worry that either the memory won't like the motherboard or the power supply might not be suited for the machine or... well, you know. Perhaps that's part of the fun, seeing your OS logo pop up after all that stressing, but I wanted to see if I could whip something up to ease these pains.

Laid the DB foundation, created a UI, started working on some of the other various elements of a web project, and now I am interested in adding a feature that might be very helpful - some sort of external product database.

What I was hoping was that I could find a major retailer with an API to lookup product information with proprietary product codes (ie... http://api.tigerdirect.com/product/S190-5295.. which is not a real link). Anyone know of any services or retailers that maintain some sort of up to date API like this? Or any other solutions?.
