hey everyone in today's tutorial I'm, going to show you guys how to create a, vintage style batch design in a row, illustrator you can create your own, unique designs using the same tricks and, techniques from this tutorial so without, any further ado let's jump into Adobe, Illustrator and get started, [Music], [Applause], [Music], alright guys here we are in a dub, illustrator let's start by creating a, new document so I'm gonna click on, create new for the document width and, height I'm going to leave it at two, thousand by two thousand pixels you can, go with any document size that you wish, for let's call this you can also jump, into more settings and change the color, mode to RGB and raster effect to high, 300 PPI and I can just click on create a, new document there we go so first things, first let's select the text tool and, type in our text obviously let's, increase the size a bit up and for the, phone I'm gonna be using blender script, phone you can use any phone that you, want or if you want to use the exact, same phone I have mentioned the link in, the description let's make this a bit, bigger and let's type in our text it can, be anything your name your company name, so let's assume that we have a fabrics, company and the company name is, authentic there we go let's set the size, up maybe around 200 and also I'm gonna, align this into the center if you don't, see this aligned tab Pathfinder options, you can go into Windows and you will, find everything right over your and just, click on this so it's gonna pop up the, basic panel so that is that so we have, our text let's right-click and create, outlines from our text so now you can, see we get this kind of merge path so to, merge them or to unite them I will be, using unite tool from the Pathfinder, there we go and then right-click go into, transform and let's share this up so set, this to vertical and let's share this up, by -8 let's see the preview and yeah, that looks good let's hit OK now we can, start building up our effect so to do, that I'm going to select the text go, into appear in, and you can see we have this appearance, different options that we can do right, over in this section so the first things, first I'm going to add a fill on this so, for the fill color here I have a small, color codes that I will be using for my, design so you can use the same color, codes if you want to so for the text I, will be using an ice cream color so I'm, just going to open up the fill hit, ctrl-v to copy/paste the color code hit, OK so there we go there we have added, the color to our text now I can select, the text layer and let's add one more, fill on this sum now add a fill to this, and for the second fill color I'm gonna, go with a different orange color that I, have right over your hit control-c let's, double click and hit control V and hit, OK now the reason you cannot see that, fill is because it is in the it's behind, our first fill so let's make sure you, fill is selected going to effects go, into distort and transform and let's add, a transform on this and it's turn on, this options that we have that is the, transform patterns and scale strokes and, effects and I'm gonna move this by maybe, point one and make sure it previews all, so he can see what's happening and let's, set that copy to 20s and let's see what, we get, so we get this a little bit of, displacement as you can see at the back, that is displacing our second fill that, we have so let's maybe increase this a, bit more I can go with 25 yeah that is, looking much better I'm gonna hit okay, so you can see we get this really nice, look now I can still have it text again, and this time I'm gonna add a stroke on, this let's pull that stroke at the back, of all the fill that we have so we have, the stroke let's increase the stroke, size to around seven maybe yeah that, looks good and it's looking here at the, moment because we need to add a nice, transform effect on this as well so, let's go in distort and transform either, transform and this time I'm going to set, this to 0.2 that is the move to, horizontal vertical to 0.2 and let's, turn on the preview let's add some, copies maybe 50 let's see what we get, and yep that is, the look I am going for me bill, increases to around 120 yeah that is, looking perfect hit okay and for the, color I can just select this open that, up and use a nice dark blue color that I, want so hit control-c let's go right, here hit control V and hit OK and bam, there we have our text ready to roll, okay so we have the text let's create, our background so I'm gonna go right, over here hold click and hold to select, the ellipse tool and let's hold alt and, shift at the same time to create a, perfect soku just like so now to put, this at the back you can hold ctrl shift, and open square bracket to put the layer, or move the layer to the back we don't, need any stroke on this so I'll set this, to zero and let's also add a background, so let's select the rectangular tool and, let's click and let's add a height of mm, width of 2000 and height of 2000 so this, is gonna be our background again I'm, gonna hold ctrl shift and open square, bracket to put this at the back align it, into the center and let's use the, background color hit ctrl-c ctrl-v there, we go I can also go into layers and you, know let's double click call this V G, and let's lock this layer up so it won't, get mess up I'm going to increase the, text size bit so let's hold alt and, shift and scale up the text just like so, maybe a bit more okay so that is looking, much better for the background color or, the background circle I'm going to use, the pew color for this so it ctrl C so, we alright so now you can see it looks, like that takes blends in with the, serval and that is the look I want to go, for make sure it's aligned into the, center same with the, all right so that is looking good let's, select the circle hit control C control, F to copy paste a new circle on new, shape on the top of that I'm going to, make this a bit smaller I'm gonna hit I, and pick up the background color let's, select this at control C control F to, copy paste a new shape on the front, let's make this a bit small again and, this time I'm going to use the orange, color alright and finally I'm gonna eat, control C control f again make this a, bit small again and again use the blue, color that we have right so we get this, really nice look as you can see maybe, you'll bring down the size of this, flavor bit more just like that and that, is looking pretty nice so now we can go, ahead and add in our text so let's, select this layer hit control C control, F which is going to be our path so I can, just bring that down a little bit silly, the text tool you can click and hold and, select the type on part tool and then, you can just go right over here and then, click to add your text now obviously I'm, going to bring down the size of the text, bailout or on let's go with something, like 8 pixels I think that is a way too, much so let's increase the size to this, much 36 pixels looks good and for the, font I will be using and next bold font, I can go into my characters let's make, it all caps and now as you can see it's, not at the position I want it to be, basically first of all let's bring down, the size a bit more to around 32 let's, scale this down just like so maybe bring, that down to around 24 yeah that looks, much better and for the color I will be, using the background color so it you can, just pick with the color from background, and I also increase the kerning a bit so, let's set this to around hundred or, maybe let's go with 200 okay perfect now, I can you know simply select this points, that we have right over here so until, and unless I get this icon of this arrow, I can that I have I can move my text, just like so and play said you know, properly so I can move this one just try, to position it properly okay and then, you can type in the text that you want, so I can double click and you know, select this delete it and add in my own, text, so quality fabrics and garments there we, go let's bring down the size a bit more, and increase the spacing to around 250, and you can again move this okay, so you can see this is looking pretty, nice so now I'm gonna add the second, ticks at the bottom so I can hit control, C control F I'm gonna select this point, and let's move this just like Oh like, that yes and now to move this to the top, I can select this line and let's just, snap in just like so perfect and then, you can type in your second text, there we go there we have added a second, X and finally the third text I'm gonna, hit ctrl C ctrl F let's bring that down, and for the color I'll go the nice, orange color that I have, there we go now I can move this and this, align this properly so basically I'm, just eyeballing this you can just take, your time and there we are good to go, now the final thing that I'm going to do, is add a nice shadow to our design so, I'm gonna select the circle hold alt and, drag this out just like so I'm going to, use this as a shadow, so let's hit control shift and open, square bracket to put this at the back, my shades at the top of our background, and then switch to gradient just like, that set these to a radial gradient and, I'm going to just select this one let's, stop click make this white color I'm, gonna double click to open up the first, color and let's add a nice brown shade, to this and then let's go into Windows, and let's pull up our transparency panel, and let's set the transform mode from, normal to multiply so we get this really, nice look we narrow down the brown a, pair just like so and then I can just, place this and then I can just it just, this basically we can almost like the, gradient tool and you know just try to, make this proper with something like, let's increase the shape a little bit, there we go there we have added a nice, shadow to our design and as you can see, it's looking very very nice so so yup, that is a wrap for today guys I hope you, enjoyed this illustrated tutorial after, a very long time I really enjoyed it, making this for you guys so if you did, make sure to subscribe comment like and, follow me on instagram at dope thought, motions I will see you guys in the next, video till then take care and always, stay raw stay creative, he's out, [Music], [Music]
Ask HN: What Elements Has Your Perfect Pricing PageHi,
I am working on our future pricing page and looked at 303 websites and came up with a list of best practices for our pricing page.
I wanted to share my finding and hopefully you can add yours?
- Call to action headline that matches the unique selling points mentioned on the homepage
- Subheadline will give details on trial, no credit card needed, amount of users in system (if the over 10,000), sense of urgency using get started in 60 seconds. Product positioning (what does the product do). Value messaging
- Plan that focus on different markets you address
- Website design Features, Pricing & Plans, About, Contact and remove the rest (including login) form the menu so there not to many links.
- Trust element top right (phone-number will work well there)
- All plans above the fold
- Free plan in bottom right of plan (if your bootstrapped, but if you have VC money and Freemium is your strategy, place free as first plan)
- High to low or low to high, 62% of SaaS companies have low-to-high and with lack of research I guess thats the best. (We will go and test these once we add the pricing page)
- Badges (user logo’s) under plans as trust elements (make them gray so there not distracting)
- Communicate the differences not focus on the similarities of the plan
- Scanable (not to long page)
- Clear pricing (good contrast)
- Use color on background of plans to keep focus on each plan. Mouse over background on horizontal is a nice feature.
- Make bigger plan feel bigger using a visual element that becomes bigger with the growing plan.
- Keep in line with website design
- Important features in F eyetracking line (price, plan differences and sign-up button)
- Mention USD not $ (Austrailian and Canadian dollars look the same)
- Testimonial under plans
- Explain how things work billing, 30 days, free under plans
- Mouse over on features
- Little amount of links (you do not want them to click away)
- Impeccable grammar (in my case huge problem :-) with easy fix... let someone check it
- Call to Actions Orange
- Blue color gives trust we might use these on plans that are not the preferred plan (need to test this)
- Green associates with wealth (try to add green check-marks on items that are simular)
- Use full screen width for plans (no right blocks with sign-up or text
- Repeat 14/30 day trial under sign-up buttons so they know what they sign-up for (<button: Sign-Up> for 14 Day Trail)
- Add some credit-cards logo's or payment processor logo to pricing page as trust element if you do not have a lot of well known clients. You can also add SSL seal if your just starting and have little trust elements available.
- Social Proof (twitter accounts, positive tweets, testimonials etc. all help (under pricing plans)

,HTML5 logo using CSS3As you probably found out, a while ago, the The World-Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has unveiled the HTML5 Logo. They launched more than a logo as they got also a full branding, including badges, t-shirts and stickers.
So, I suppose that’s a good thing, that HTML5 got some branding, sounds very interesting!
While looking at it and admiring it, as I find it very nice, I thought about how can I do it with CSS3..
,Digital Ocean has a new logo and branding,Logo and Icon designers hi, I am currently developing a website and I am not the most talented graphic designer out there. The theme of my page is playfulness - kind of like the 2005 Charlie and chocolate factory or Katy Perry's California Girl. I have the general template set up, but want to add in Logos and Icon/Badges to make the page more alive.
Does anyone have any freelancer to recommande or is a freelancer themselves looking for work, please pm me. Thank you!.
,How we fed ourselves for a year & sold a startup...with only 300 lines of codeHello Hacker News,
I’ve been reading HN for a long time now and love the way the community shares thoughts with each other. I haven’t done anything extraordinary or extremely successful, but I want to chip in to the community with this experience that I find pretty interesting.
A year ago, I moved to San Francisco from rural Missouri hoping to join the start-up world. At the same time, I met a friend, Zac, who also just moved to the bay area around that time but had left his job to pursue something more interesting. We decided to become partners and start hacking stuff together.
Since we were new to the city and we didn’t know any one, we decided to build a mobile app that lets people use their phone to read the profiles of others nearby. It was supposed to help people “break the ice” and meet new people. This was our first startup. We coded the product in a week and pushed the product live.
Once live, we got like 5 users, since no one really knew about it. To promote this product, we decided to target events, since we thought that events is where people would like to meet each other. We locked ourselves in a room and asked this question over and over: “What is something valuable we can provide to event organizers so that they can promote our product?”
Zac finally came up with an idea. He proposed that we could build a kiosk where attendees can type in their name, and a name badge would instantly print. Then the attendees would be integrated into our mobile app as well. At first, it sounded insanely dumb (what would my mom think if I told her that I moved 2000 miles away from home to print paper name badges?), and I laughed really hard. But after thinking about it, it seemed “cool”, and we gave it a try.
In a day of work, we wrote the software in 300 lines of code and tested it. We ordered a label printer from Dymo and hooked them up to a Dell Mini 10v netbook. After that was done, we contacted an event organizer, convinced him that our system wasn’t going to fail, and asked if we could print name badges for him.
The event organizer let us try out our system, and that night turned out to be amazing. People thought it was the coolest thing ever to type their name in a laptop and instantly have a name badge print out. At the end of the night, we handed out lots of cards and got lots of people to try our mobile app. It was the first time in my life that there was “buzz” around something I created.
We continued to hit events and print name badges. We bought more printers and lots and lots of labels. We bought a huge travel suitcase to hold everything, and we carried it everywhere to print name badges for events.
The experience was amazing. Not only did we get a lot of people to try our mobile app, but all the attendees thought it was the “coolest” gadget ever. I guess we essentially “engineered” our way into these $600 technology events for free. Many event organizers gave us the front-seats sponsor booth, without charging us a dollar. Some gave us free advertising banners at their events. Most importantly, everyone walked around with our logo on their shirt. We shook all their hands as they walked into the door. Advertising can’t get any better than that. We quickly got our mobile app into the hands of our users, and talked to more than 500+ directly.
Unfortunately, after a month passed, we realized that our initial mobile app wasn’t working. People didn’t want the product. They didn’t want to read profiles about people around them. The mobile app wasn’t useful.
Here’s the weird thing about start-ups: things just happen. Although our mobile app failed miserably, our little name badge printing system became insanely popular. Event organizers were begging us to print badges for them every time they had an event. They were referring us to their friends, and we were hitting events literally every day with our name badge printer. To cater for each event, we forked our original software (which was completely hard coded and not well thought through) way too many times.
Just to name a few, we hit: TechCrunch events, Smash Summit, SF Music Tech, Future/Money Tech, ISA, Twitter events, FailCon/FailChat, TEDxSoma. You can see some pictures here: http://imhello.posterous.com/ .
Eventually, we got so many requests that we couldn’t go to all the events anymore. It was too much for us to handle. That’s when it finally hit us right on the forehead. This is what it’s like to build a product someone wants. Event organizers wanted to use our system. They’ll email you, call you, beg you, and tell their friends about you.
Since we were too overbooked, we decided to charge and up our product. We added EventBrite integration, customization, and polished it up a little. For every event, we would make around $50-$300 dollars (depending on the size and labor).
Soon, this little name badge printing software was now able to support me and my partner’s living expenses. And in the end, we sold the product to a small company. Although it was not an amazing multi-million dollar acquisition, it was an acquisition that gave us enough money to start another company.
The lesson we learned is that something so tiny as a “name badge printing machine” may seem silly and pointless at first, but it led to opportunities you can’t first predict. In our case, it fed us and turned into a small acquisition. We made lots of friends and great people while we were attending these events. Even our $10 Logitech keyboard was touched by many great CEOs and celebrities who came through us to get their name badges. We got completely free promotion and direct advertising.
I think that every startup has opportunities where they can be creative. Every startup can build something on the side and attach it to their product somehow. My advice is that if you find something “cool”, even if it’s small or trivial at first, take it for a spin before dropping it in the trash can. It might just spin into something that can help in the future.
After selling the name badge printing software, we decided to go back and pivot on our initial mobile app. Our new company is called View. View is a mobile app that “tells you what you need to know, wherever you are.” We’re really excited about this app because it’s very useful to our daily life.
We’re about to launch beta very soon. If you’d like to try it, go to http://view.io
Make sure you click the link above instead of typing it through the browser, so we can know you were referred from Hacker News and can give priority access.
Thanks for reading my story!
Felix
P.S. View is not in the App Store yet, but if you’d like to try the iPhone app as a beta tester, shoot me an email and tell me your city/state in the subject line: felix@view.io. We only have a limited number of invitations left, so I can’t guarantee that everyone can try it..
,Ask HN: Ever hired an artist?I've been making social apps for about two years now, but so far they have never used graphics. I don't know any artists, and don't really know where to find them, or even the right terminology. What I'd like to accomplish at this stage is as a test get a few simple drawings done, such as badges that users can get, and then expand from there once I find a relationship I'm comfortable with.
I've tried posting on DeviantArt and other forums, but when I browse the replies others are getting, the portfolios posted don't seem to compare well to the level of graphics in social games like FarmVille. Now I'm thinking that instead of trying to contact individuals, I should find some kind of an art company which has already gathered such talent. I've only found one promising company so far (http://animasia-studio.com), hoping they could help.
Have you ever successfully gotten something more complex than a simple logo done for you by an artist / company? Can you recommend anyone? Please share your experiences, thanks!.
,Ask HN: "Fair Use" of Magazine Logos?Hi,
Our organization makes free software, and recently 'Product X' was reviewed and given the 'Editor's Choice' award by PC Magazine.
Seeing this, I placed their magazine logo linking back to the review on our download page, alongside the badges of other download awards we've been given in the past.
I was contacted barely 24 hours later by Ziff Davis Media legal, and told that my use of the logo was not Fair Use and I had to license their editor's choice award logo for $1250 per year.
I'm no lawyer, but I honestly feel that this is fair use? I'm using their logo to link back to their site - does anyone know if this is not allowed?
BTW, the PC Magazine review used our product, screenshots of our product, and more without letting us know they were doing a review let alone asking for our permission. Can someone explain the logic in this to me? And on their site, they have the screenshot of Product X alongside the 'PC Magazine Editor's Choice' logo.
I'm sure anyone reading this can figure out 'our organization' and 'Product X' but whatever..
,Ask HN: A different approach to ending Patent TrollsI know patent trolls are a hot topic on the internet right now, and there are really great initiatives like http://fixpatents.org/ that are taking the fight right to the government, but it seems like things rarely (or too slowly) get fixed when the government is involved. I've been trying to think of a different way of approaching the problem. HTML 5 has badges you can put on your site pledging that you support a forward thinking web (http://www.w3.org/html/logo/). Patagonia created "1% for the Planet" (http://onepercentfortheplanet.org/) publicly pledging they will donate 1% of their profits to environmental causes.
Could it work to approach software patents the same way? Maybe a public pledge or badge on your startup's site saying that you will never participate in patent trolling. If you put the badge on your site, you will be listed on a central site of all awesome companies making the pledge. If you make the pledge and then go back on your word, then the people of the internet will publicly shame you. What does HN think?.
,Ask YC: what is the future for browser extensions that personalize the web?i'm in a position where i can launch personalization on 30,000 browsers. but i havent - because i'm not sure what the equation with websites, my monetization options, and my users could be.
so i thought i'd ask the community, with the example of a few cases & existing scenarios:
[1] GetGlue provides a check-in mechanism for pages you visit. They basically augment the website with toolbars, links, 'like' buttons, badges & so on & even referral links to 3rd parties
[2] webmynd adds personalization to google
[3] rapportive adds links, and even third party raplets into gmail
Conduit[4] has a toolbar, that triggers personalization within webapges and is in the top 100 websites visited in the world today
my question :
1. will they alienate themselves from content destinations ( their 'hosts' )
2. will they be able to sell advertising on a space owned by the host
here in india, a comparable scenario would be when popular dailies occasionally had a pamphlet that the delivery boy would fill and make some money out of. but guess what. the newspaper sued the advertiser - not the 'enabler'.
that said, there are content/personalization cases where the line is more blurry and tilting towards what the user decides to do.
eg: skype extension[5] that takes numbers on a page and turns them into 'call via skype' buttons.
or more recently google's highlight extension [6] that let's you double click/select random phrases on any page, and it displays a google logo with a search button right there. does this account for monetizing 3rd party content? essentially users of this plugin could be on a yahoo or bing page, select a word and a google search would show up. it's kind of a tricky case of accountability IMHO.
if my users want a site personalized, does that justify my plugin personalizing content/websites?
Or perhaps Cooliris [7] & Facebook's [8] form of bizdev driven personalizaton offer a half way path. I think wibiya [9] has reached great scale and are in a position to offer a non-extension,publisher-controlled personalization experience.
thoughts ?
PS: great thoughts on my question to firefox extensions traction here btw

,Do we have a Indie Developer logo or badge?,Smashing Network Logo and Badge Design Process,Ask HN:Is there a dedicated hacker icon?I was wondering if there is some kind of universally accepted hacker icon, logo or badge that represent the hacker culture. Do you guys know if it exist and if not is it good idea to have one?.
,House Bill 3011 Disallows Parody of the TSA...Sort ofRead the paragraph of the bill (295) here: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h112-3011&version=ih&nid=t0%3Aih%3A449
Excerpt from the bill:
Whoever, except with the written permission of the Assistant Secretary for Transportation Security (or the Director of the Federal Air Marshal Service for issues involving the Federal Air Marshal Service), knowingly uses the words Transportation Security Administration, United States Transportation Security Administration, Federal Air Marshal Service, United States Federal Air Marshal Service, Federal Air Marshals, the initials T.S.A., F.A.M.S., F.A.M., or any colorable imitation of such words or initials, or the likeness of a Transportation Security Administration or Federal Air Marshal Service badge, logo, or insignia on any item of apparel, in connection with any advertisement, circular, book, pamphlet, software, or other publication, or with any play, motion picture, broadcast, telecast, or other production, in a matter that is reasonably calculated to convey the impression that the wearer of the item of apparel is acting pursuant to the legal authority of the Transportation Security Administration or Federal Air Marshal Service, or to convey the impression that such advertisement, circular, book, pamphlet, software, or other publication, or such play, motion picture, broadcast, telecast, or other production, is approved, endorsed, or authorized by the Transportation Security Administration or Federal Air Marshal Service;.
Now, this doesn't necessarily on free speech at first glance. However, I could easily see why someone that is a bit...overzealous...might think they can get away with trying to disallow any parody. Think of the SNL skit about the TSA..
