Hey all! I finished the MVP of this iOS app, and I want to get some feedback on the idea in general. From my experience, developing augmented reality experiences is hard, so I believe creating an easier tool and platform to place digital content on any physical product or logo would be something valuable to brands, advertisers, and developers in general.
What do you like and not like? What kind of AR games/experiences would you want to see on products and posters?
Anyone who would want to create mixed reality experiences for brands and advertisement, or any businesses interested in creating AR mobile experiences, feel free to reach out to me at aem336@cornell.edu
Thanks!.
,Ask HN: Ever hired an artist?I've been making social apps for about two years now, but so far they have never used graphics. I don't know any artists, and don't really know where to find them, or even the right terminology. What I'd like to accomplish at this stage is as a test get a few simple drawings done, such as badges that users can get, and then expand from there once I find a relationship I'm comfortable with.
I've tried posting on DeviantArt and other forums, but when I browse the replies others are getting, the portfolios posted don't seem to compare well to the level of graphics in social games like FarmVille. Now I'm thinking that instead of trying to contact individuals, I should find some kind of an art company which has already gathered such talent. I've only found one promising company so far (http://animasia-studio.com), hoping they could help.
Have you ever successfully gotten something more complex than a simple logo done for you by an artist / company? Can you recommend anyone? Please share your experiences, thanks!.

,Ask HN: How can I make a “kid's computer” today as good as an Apple II?When I was a kid, I had an Apple II with a BASIC interpreter, Print Shop Pro to make really cool cards and banners, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego to learn about geography, Pinball Construction Set, Number Munchers, Oregon Trail, and LOGO for programming the turtle.
Today I can't see a way of giving my kids a computer like that, where there are a lot of open-ended ways to create. The iPad games are too directly educational, or mindless, and great creative experiences don't seem available on desktop or iPad suitable for early elementary schoolers.
Any suggestions here? I will be happy to pay $..
,Ask HN: What to do when a Chinese startup clones your website?Dear HN,
I'm CEO of a Germany-based eSports startup and we have a problem.
Today we were approached by a Chinese user of our website who told us that a China-based startup has launched a direct clone of our website aimed at the Chinese market.
Our website https://strivewire.com is a host of for-money eSports tournaments in the Hearthstone vertical, but we are working on expanding to other games as well.
The website in question is a very obvious clone of ours and has both .com and .cn domains: - www.haogegebisai.com - www.chosengamer.com
Basically they copied all the design and even our logo down to the actual URLs.
I've added their CEO on WeChat and inquired about this, and he said they are big fans of our startup. But he also mentioned that they already have investors. Their website launched two days ago and already has a bunch of activity.
We've talked about this internally and hope to be able to gain this startup as a Chinese subsidiary, but we are still unsure if this will actually work out.
From a legal standpoint we are very unsure how much you can actually do in such a case. Should we just wait it out? Our should we aim to litigate to put pressure on their investors? I have some experience in international litigation in cybercrime cases, but from a practical perspective it is very likely to bind a lot of resources and focus.
Another huge problem for us is that we are in talks with a very large Chinese IT company (triple-digit $Bn market cap), and if there is a clone growing in their backyard they might pass on us.
It'd be great if people with more experience in these things could give us some advice.
Thanks, Benjamin
TL;DR: Chinese startup is cloning our business, unsure what to do.
,Ask HN: What to work on?I'm getting really tired of dreaming up cool ideas for apps, cranking out prototypes, and then finding there is zero interest. Here are my four best ideas for what to work on next. I don't know how to "validate" them beyond a landing page/adwords. Last time I attempted that, adwords banned my campaign immediately.
LongCal: Basically, a calendar that goes beyond the standard month/week/day view. Emphasis on long term thinking and planning. I made a very rough prototype here (click on logo to get some test data): http://humbit.com/longcal/
uTrim: A URL shortener for universities. The idea is to create trustworthy links that can only be created by people actually associated with a school. I already have a functioning app and if you don't have an .edu account you can at least check out the landing page : https://utr.im/
Vulgat Library: Helps businesses create an internal lending library (movies, books, games). I sold this to two game companies, so it's the only thing I feel has proven demand. But I'd have no idea how to find more customers. This is the landing page that adwords objected to: http://vulgat.com/
Business naming app: After all the naming debacles I've seen on HN, I think an app that generates names (and checks against .com registration and trademark) could be really useful. My big doubt is if anyone would pay for it.
Do any of these sound worthwhile? Maybe I should just suck it up and do 30x500....

,Ask HN: Is there a way for indie developers to avoid the App Store Tax?Several large entities like Netflix, Spotify, Epic Games, and Tinder seem to be successfully avoiding the “App Store Tax” (30% on all purchases) seemingly on account of their size and clout.
The Financial Times (much smaller) blatantly gets away with a message in their app saying “You can join the Financial Times by going to our website” and prevents users who aren’t logged in from reading articles. There’s no way to pay for an FT subscription in the iOS app.
Is there a way for independent developers to do the same?
Could I have a login splash page with my app’s logo and no other information that subtly encourages people to Google for the app’s site where they can then sign up? Or could I charge a separate “iOS usage fee” that’s in addition to my app’s main subscriber fee?
For context, users of my app also have access to a web client with many additional features. In fact, the app is an ancillary product with a subset of features that are useful in a mobile context.
Any advice appreciated..
,Ask HN: How Do You Market A Hotel Comparison Website?Any Ideas how you can drive the right traffic to your site without it coming over as spam.
I know the site isn't perfect I am still getting some things sorted. Like the cars and flights and some other shit.
I am saving up money to get the logo re-done.
I used a free 50 google adwords voucher and all google did was put it on pages which weren't relevant. When I questioned it with them, they rang me and said the pages where relevant, which is bullshit.
Here is an example.
Most of my clicks where from http://tvmao.com/
Which was a Chinese site I don't mind the Chinese since it is a growing economy. But there 195 clicks didn't even appear in google analytics. So that wiped 5.80 of my budget.
Here is another example.
gamesandapps.com was 66 clicks which cost me 2.59 of my budget. I don't even know where the site display's it's ads.
So since the display ads wiped out 4/5 of my budget and 90 Percent weren't relevant I think I will stick to search in future which isn't on default so lession learnt, so watch out newbies to the wonderful world of Google AdWords.
Any other sites, which work, to market your site?
My site is www.cutpricedhotels.com.

,Ask HN: Is it wise to create pre-launch/coming soon page for future product?I've been working on a product (a web simulation game of sorts) for some time now, and I have a soft deadline that I set for myself to launch it. That date will be between 1st and 15th of June. I'm wondering, is it smart to create some kind of coming soon page, where people can leave their mail and be notified about it?
Also, if that would be the move, how much would you reveal on that 'coming soon' webpage? Would it be a logo and a 'signup' box with something really vague, like a tagline, or more?
I have the whole landing page already made, with a value prop written, few examples and what the product is about..
,Ask HN: Which design rights are enforceable in the United States?Hey guys,
I created a puzzle game as a side project a few years back. It's similar to a Rubik's Cube, but in 2D instead of 3D. Here's the Google Play listing:
http://goo.gl/o7X6I
An identical listing also appears in Amazon's and Barnes and Noble's stores. Yesterday, I received a takedown notice from Amazon that advised me to contact Rubik's Cube's security team. Their representative sent me this note:
> (Y)our images of the cube is infringing our designrights. Please see attached certificate. You will have to change the design of your cube or get a license from Rubik's Cube.
> Attachment: http://goo.gl/08Cq6
I'm based in the US and they are based in Sweden. My understanding of US IP law is that puzzle design is not protectable, and I was very careful not to call my puzzle a Rubik's Cube in its description. I don't know what the rules are in Europe.
The name, design, and logo of Cognicube are distinctively mine. I don't believe the concept of sliding colored bricks to solve a puzzle is protectable in the US.
The only thing I can see in their application that is even remotely similar to Cognicube is their logo. It's is an isometric projection of a Rubik's Cube from the corner. In the tablet version of Cognicube, there's a view that shows all six faces of the cube displayed in quasi-3D. It's not my logo, and it's drawn from a different angle than the image in their trademark. (It also has six faces instead of three.)
Compare:
- Their logo: http://goo.gl/oZd0C
- My screenshot: http://goo.gl/3Stve
I know that Hacker News is not an outlet for legal advice, but I imagine you guys may have run into similar issues before. Are EU design rights enforcable in the US? Do you see anything I've done that infringes their rights in the US?
I've only made a couple hundred dollars over the last few years on this project, so it might not be worth contesting, but if I'm actually infringing something, I'd like to know for next time. =)
Thanks!.
,Hacking Amazon Algo in LatamNo code or images, just good ol' text.
There are 4 steps to hacking Amazon's algorithm and I'll summarize them here.
Step 1: finding products that can lead their categories.
There are two tools to do this, either JungleScout or Helium10, I personally like H10 better (both are paid for).
Look up a particular subcategory (e.g. bed sheets) and download the Excel containing the sellers and the sales amounts for the last 30 days.
The key to identifying good products and categories is: price point above US $20, last 30 days revenue for top 3 players above US $10,000, local rather than global players, big sales difference between top players and bottom players
When you identify products that have a good ticket size and few, local competitors, add up what the sum of all product sales is worth and you get your total addressable market. Quantify the % for the player #3 (best case), #10 (base case) and #25 (worst case). Do this exercise for 25 products and select the 3 you deem best.
Step 2: sourcing.
Easiest way to source is from Alibaba, otherwise try to find local suppliers (can be trickier). Always ask for samples!
Make sure you have a brand name and register it with the local authorities. For some products you'll need a certificate. This takes time.
Create a logo. Send that logo to the suppliers.
Send production order for the amount of units the base case says you could sell. Bring 20% of units by plane, 80% by sea. Make sure you comply with the accounting and import laws (you'll need an agente aduanal to help and make the payment for you)
In the production meantime prepare the images and set up marketplace accounts (Amazon + MELI).
Look up keywords to use on JungleScout.
Have everything set up.
Receive the goods in a warehouse until you get access to FBA.
Step 3: Sell (the hack!)
Assign a 50% ACOS at first to get high inorganic ranking, costly but worth it
Ask friends & family to buy your product and rate it with 5 stars (not all reviews are shown by Amazon).. you can use coupon codes for this
Price high initially and set a 25% discount for the first 20 units
First weeks will be painful, but after the first 10 reviews on your product you will begin to see some traction, make sure 100% of deliveries are on time
Check your ranking vs competitors and measure your organic ranking (non-paid Ads)
The point of this game is to spend excessive money on Advertising so you rank higher inorganically to then rank higher organically.
Once you rank on page one organically you can lower ACOS to 40%, and once you are among top 20 to 30% and then to 20%, until you reach 15%, that's what you should have once you stabilize.
Step 4: Next order
When you in fact see your sales adding up you need to order another batch. Be aggressive. Order enough inventory to be #3 in your category the next 6 months. Running out of stock screws your ranking.
The more you order the lower your COGS
Track your organic ranking everytime
Step 5: Win profitably
After a few months of doing this your P&L should be EBITDA positive. 15% Ad spend, 30-40% COGS, 25% FBA + Amazon fee, 20-30% profit.
That's how you hack it. By being more aggressive in Ad spend with a mid-term strategy than competitors.
The initial setup takes a lot of time, but this is a super scalable model. In 6 months I burnt $250k without income. By month 9 I had $420,000 in revenue with profit. It works!.
