Interview with Firefox logo designer Jon HicksJon Hicks is one half of Hicksdesign and has been working as a lead designer with Opera software. He is known as the logo designer of Firefox, Thunderbird, Silverback and Mailchimp. Needless to say, he is one of the most talented and hardworking designers focusing on both icons and logos..
,Ask YC: What do you think of our site, bug.gd?http://bug.gd
The idea is simple: you search for an error message on bug.gd. If the solution is there, you win. If not, then we'll ask you (48 hours later) how you figured it out. Your answer is saved to help the next lost soul.
Our latest news is our launch of a Firefox extension that lets you skip the email reminder aspect, saves some keystrokes (auto-paste), and tracks your unsolved errors.
The vision is to get to the point where silly things like computer errors and crashes never need to be solved twice. If someone solves a problem, everyone gets benefit of the answer. We've been asked why users would use the service over searching Google, but we see that as saying you prefer throwing things in the trash over recycling. Some people are like that, but there are many of us that don't want our work to be wasted. As a bonus, since all the solutions submitted are indexed by major search engines, you're helping even those who don't use the site.
Back in October we prepopulated the database with 65,000 Microsoft KB article error messages and it's been growing ever since. Let us know what you think, if you have a moment.
(And, yeah, the logo is intentionally and subtly buggy. We'll get over our silliness eventually.).
,The New University Of California Logo Needs To Die A Quick, Painful Death,I built a web app that help events organizers build mobile appsHi there.
I am looking for someone to test my app, it's a small web app prototype to help event organizers build cross platform mobile apps, the main concept here is building blocks and cloud storage. With these two modules I can automate the whole process. I mean any kind of informative app without complex business logic can be built that way, I'm thinking about portfolios, small businesses apps, etc..
The idea is not new, similar services already exist but what I'm offering is very cheap compared to what you can found on the market. Also many features are still not implemented... like accent color, logo, etc.. The finished product of course will be an APK and IPA files.
The technology I'm using is google firebase for the cloud and react/react native for the web/mobile app, if you wish to learn more there's three easy steps:
1 - Sign up and add some data via your dashboard https://eventmob.herokuapp.com
2- Download expo app
iOs: https://itunes.apple.com/app/apple-store/id982107779
Playstore: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=host.exp.exponent&referrer=www
3- Scan this QR code to access the app
https://expo.io/@usfslk/event
4- Log in using the same account and explore your fresh new app
Adding data can takes time and that's why I created a prebuilt demo so you can do it in two steps:
Explore the app and makes some changes, you'll see the app get updated instantly.
Log in using these credentials:
email: blvckasvp@outlook.com
password: 000000
Please take into account that both apps are just prototypes and many features will be added later. Also when you publish no account will be required to view the app, you can still sign up to submit feedback and receive push notifications
Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.
,Firefox Logo - Prescient?A weird coincidence of web browser usage visualization?.
,Ask HN: What was the best version of everything you used?Example:
OS: Windows xp sp3
Browser: Firefox (the old one, before chrome existed)
Search engine: old Google (with 3d logo, no bubble)
Phone: iPhone 5
Chat: mIRC / IRCnet
Video player: mplayer
music player: winamp.
,Launch HN: Slingshow (YC W20) – Easily build custom virtual events and webinarsHello world, my name is Nilay. My cofounder Jorge and I founded Slingshow (https://slingshow.com/) and we're super excited (and nervous!) to finally launch on HN. Slingshow helps you build custom virtual events for your community. Think Zoom, but with a modern and flexible user experience that seamlessly flows between different ways of interacting with larger and smaller groups.
Last year, we were in YC W20 pivoting through several ideas, but then the pandemic hit. Suddenly, our YC batch was just a series of monotonous Zoom calls. We lost the magic of the social dinners, random conversations, and catching a speaker afterward for a personal chat. We quickly recognized that while Zoom was great for small meetings, the functionality and UI/UX made large group events unorganized and passive.
During the pandemic, many novel and sometimes gimmicky video platforms emerged targeting the social niche. But every organization hosts more than social events. We built Slingshow to have no learning curve for traditional use cases like panels and presentations while seamlessly incorporating newer social formats. We think the best virtual event formats are still in their infancy and are unique to every use case, so we wanted to create a flexible tool that would let organizers build their own experiences.
We were inspired by companies like Notion, Coda, Retool, and Airtable, which work in the UI/UX paradigm of creating functional modular building blocks. This means choosing a few simple, valuable abstractions like a table or a button and letting users mix and match these components to meet their needs. In our case, we’re starting with four fundamental blocks that organizers use to plan a schedule: Tables for free-flowing networking like interactions, Rooms for concurrent presentations, a Stage for classic webinar like presentations, and a Call to Action block for redirecting to external websites like forms, activities, etc.
Using our blocks, one of our enterprise customers (Fivetran) holds their standard webinar on our Stage block and then shifts into the Rooms block where attendees can choose to speak with the panelists. Another customer held a dating event that started with a Stage to introduce the event, then switched to Tables of 4, then 3, then 2 with different prompts to create more intimate conversations. We also have other customers hosting unique product launches, happy hours, live podcasts, cohort-based classes, and multi-day hackathons. While some platforms offer similar functionality, they’re heavy conference platforms with a large learning curve. They also require days of work to create specialized assets and often involve trained intermediaries like event organizers and planners.
We’re not focused on conferences but rather on simplicity, and Blocks help us achieve that. They're versatile and help simplify the organizer's event creation process by hiding complexity. Blocks are also a simple way for us to add new formats in the future. By just by creating a schedule with Blocks, Slingshow automatically generates the event page with registration, a cover image, and the entire attendee experience. Add a logo and brand color, and we'll automatically theme the entire event to make it feel like your brand.
We've chosen to launch late as nothing else matters if the video isn't stable and reliable for first-time users. One speaker failing to connect could ruin an event leaving a bad impression on everyone involved. We’ve spent several months working with early customers to gracefully handle errors and give helpful error messages for all the complexity of video: weak network connections, old browsers, mobile devices, firewalls, SDK edge cases, permission issues, etc. Depending on the use case, we also switch between multiple WebRTC video infrastructure providers. And lastly, following the lead of companies like Discord and Tandem, we built our backend using the Phoenix framework in Elixir because of its excellent support for WebSockets.
We still have a long way to go, but we feel confident with what we have and are ready to open up to a broader audience. We'd love to hear your feedback and experiences with the many virtual events you've probably experienced over this pandemic. Thanks! :–)

,Ask HN: Need freelance front-end work to pay college loans while I job-huntHi HN,
I'm a recent CS graduate and several year HN member currently looking for a job at a startup, but it's slow going. My college loans are eating up my savings, and I would love to be able to do some freelance work to help cover those and improve my skills and experience.
I have no problem with very small or one-off projects. If something is worth $10 or $20 for you not to mess with, shoot me an email.
Pricing: For HN members, cheap, and payable on satisfactory delivery. Seriously, you send me a project and a price, and it will probably work for me.
Contact: brianfarr@gmail.com
Here are some services I can offer:
* Convert a design to markup: Got a great Photoshop design or other image and need it converted to clean, valid, and semantic markup? Let me do that while you work on your product.
* Customized a purchased theme: You found that great design on ThemeForest but you need to make some changes and incorporate your logo and branding? No problem. Armed with a text editor and Firebug, I can get this done quickly.
* Basic CMS or Wordpress Theme: Want a basic theme from your design or markup so you can use a content management system and update quickly? No problem. We're not talking about creating an Engadget style superblog or infinitely customizable theme here, just your design and the ability to use an edit box to update your site.
* Fix small problems on web pages: Got some tweaks, bug fixes, and cross browser problems you've been meaning to take care of? Let me wear out the refresh button and fix them for you. I have plenty of HTML, CSS, and scripting experience to figure out what's going wrong and how to correct it.
* Website proofing and reviewing: Get a fresh set of eyes on your marketing and copy, get help distilling your message.
* Web application testing: You're probably getting tired of using it and you're totally acclimated to it anyways. Have someone else try it out, see if anything breaks, give usability feedback, etc.
* Something crazy you just thought of: I have lots of other skills too, so let me know!
Thanks for reading, and don't hesitate to email me ( brianfarr@gmail.com ) with any questions!.
,Ramaze needs YOUTL;DR sissies: We need a designer for http://ramaze.net/, send an Email to info@yorickpeterse.com if you're too damn lazy to read this post.
Ramaze is a Ruby framework that while generally underrated has a lot of potential. Compared to other Ruby frameworks it's probably the most Ruby-like framework as it does not enforce a new way of thinking and developing applications, instead it adds a lot of functionality to Rack and Ruby to make it easier to develop MVC based applications (although you don't have to stick to the MVC pattern).
When looking at other frameworks, regardless of their language, I personally think Ramaze is the most flexible one out there. However, there is one big problem: we're not widely know. This issue is caused by multiple things but the two most important ones are relatively bad documentation and a website that isn't very informative when it comes to helping newcomers. While the documentation is something we've been discussing for quite some time and actually are working on it the website is something we need to let somebody else do. Not because we don't want to do it ourselves but because we're developers and not designers. So far I and several other Ramaze members (manveru, Pistos, etc) have had a few chat sessions and we agreed that the following has to be done regarding the website (ramaze.net)
* The homepage should show a basic example about how to use Ramaze, a good example would be the website of Sinatra (sinatrarb.com)
* A blog to keep people up to date with the latest Ramaze news
* A showcase of Ramaze applications
* A userguide, either in the form of a wiki or something else. Currently there's book.ramaze.net but it's unorganized and out of date
Based on these ideas I made a few rough sketches as well as an initial design, which can be seen here: http://cl.ly/5aKi
While the other Ramaze members liked the design I'm not that fond of it myself and I'd rather spend my time coding and improving the actual
code rather than making a website :)
What we're looking for is a good designer who's willing to contribute to an open source project by designing the new website for Ramaze. I'm going to be honest with you, there's a good chance you won't earn a penny from it but keep this in mind: you're probably using open source software (Chromium, Firefox, etc) as well so you'd be a big hypocrite and a dick to say 'Meh, open source is for fags'. Other than that I might be willing to pay money for it based on the results but that's something we'll discuss once there's a better idea of how the design will look, how much time it will take and so on.
What we're not looking for are 12 year old entrepreneurs who think that using a few gradients equals proper design. This may sound rude but I'm going to say it up front to prevent any misunderstandings. Now don't get me wrong, if you're young like me (I'm only 18 actually) this doesn't mean you're not welcome it's just that in general people below a certain age (usually 18-20) don't have enough real-life experience to know how to handle clients. I might have experience in coding but since I've only been doing it for a few years (5 or so) and only about a year on a professional basis I still don't fully get how to handle clients and such. To cut a long story short, here's the type of designer we're looking for:
* Decent amount of experience, knowledge of the web is a big plus
* Understanding of how open source projects work
* Proper knowledge of color theories, we don't need pink + green
* Well organized, I'm not going to wait 2 months for the design so don't bother replying if you feel that it's more important to teabag people in Halo than to finish that design you were supposed to finish 2 weeks ago
Do note that you don't have to slice the design into HTML as we'll handle this ourselves, as rude as it may sound designers tend to have very limited knowledge of how to organize your HTML and CSS in a proper way. We're just looking for somebody to create the actual design.
In order to make your life easier here are some extra details about Ramaze:
* The color scheme is red and gray mainly but other colors are welcome as long as they mix with the logo (https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/efb21e9eb7a8ced4c808086b77cd86d0?s=140)
* Ramaze is an agnostic framework, this means you can use pretty much anything the way you want it without breaking things
* The GitHub account is located here: https://github.com/ramaze
* Ramaze is mostly a community driven framework, while there are a few 'core' contributors a lot of the code has been added by 'regulars'
If there's anything else you need feel free to ask. I would prefer it if you would reply in this thread if you're interested rather than Emailing me, this makes it easier for others to see who's interested plus it's easier for me to share everything with the other Ramaze guys. If you insist on Emailing me my address is info@yorickpeterse.com..
,Ask HN: How and whom to hire – First designer?Hey everyone,
I run a B2B SaaS company (5 month old), so far I've been doing the user research/UX stuff, while my school friend is helping out with visuals. So many product features getting shaped and I feel it's high time we hire a full-time designer. After talking to lot of people and reading articles online, I understood there are three types of designers - UX (user research, wire framing, story board, sitemap), UI (design the interface using Photoshop/Illustrator/Fireworks) and Visual/Graphic designers (logo, posters, branding etc.)
My question:
Should we get someone who'll own all the facets of the design? Where to find such desingers and what to test during the interviews?
Or either hire two designers one will be doing the UX part and the other will be designing the user interface?
What would you suggest and why?
Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge!.
,Tell HN: Biology.Net, coming soonAny Pubmed / Medline users out here?
I just put up the 'Coming soon' page for my next website, http://biology.net
It's gonna be a Pubmed clone with a twist - personalized recommendations, just like on Netlfix. You rate papers you like as you find them and the engine will recommend what you should read next.
If you know of any student in biology / life science related fields, or any Pubmed.com users, feel free to tell them about it, the site should be live in the next few months!
Even if you're not a life scientist or a physician, I'd like to have your opinion on the general design, logo, loading time, or anything else you can think of :).

so i thought i'd ask the community, with the example of a few cases & existing scenarios:
[1] GetGlue provides a check-in mechanism for pages you visit. They basically augment the website with toolbars, links, 'like' buttons, badges & so on & even referral links to 3rd parties
[2] webmynd adds personalization to google
[3] rapportive adds links, and even third party raplets into gmail
Conduit[4] has a toolbar, that triggers personalization within webapges and is in the top 100 websites visited in the world today
my question :
1. will they alienate themselves from content destinations ( their 'hosts' )
2. will they be able to sell advertising on a space owned by the host
here in india, a comparable scenario would be when popular dailies occasionally had a pamphlet that the delivery boy would fill and make some money out of. but guess what. the newspaper sued the advertiser - not the 'enabler'.
that said, there are content/personalization cases where the line is more blurry and tilting towards what the user decides to do.
eg: skype extension[5] that takes numbers on a page and turns them into 'call via skype' buttons.
or more recently google's highlight extension [6] that let's you double click/select random phrases on any page, and it displays a google logo with a search button right there. does this account for monetizing 3rd party content? essentially users of this plugin could be on a yahoo or bing page, select a word and a google search would show up. it's kind of a tricky case of accountability IMHO.
if my users want a site personalized, does that justify my plugin personalizing content/websites?
Or perhaps Cooliris [7] & Facebook's [8] form of bizdev driven personalizaton offer a half way path. I think wibiya [9] has reached great scale and are in a position to offer a non-extension,publisher-controlled personalization experience.
thoughts ?
PS: great thoughts on my question to firefox extensions traction here btw

,Fred Gehrke, creator of the first football helmet logo (2021),Ask HN: Help Is it worth rebranding (trademark infringement)?I'm one of the Cofounders of a startup called Super Owl and we are busy working on an iPhone app which delivers spoken word content weekly to subscribers. We have recently been featured as part of a Next Web article about 'How Startups Choose their names' - http://thenextweb.com/insider/2011/12/03/9-startups-explain-how-they-chose-their-names/
This was a nice bit of early press for us and we were surprised but delighted to be approached. However, very soon after this article went out we received a letter from a company stating that we have 'breached their trademarks'. This company is another startup, yet to launch their app publicly, however they claim that they are an established business - see their first letter to us here - https://skitch.com/aishay/guy25/letter1
I e-mailed the following reply:
--------------------------
'Hi ,
I haven't heard of * before - just looked at your website and it looks like a great service.
I'm slightly confused about the letter attached as you state that Super Owl breaches your trademarks - have you registered a trademark for the name 'owl', '' or 'super owl'? Obviously, if it's the latter I can appreciate your concern.
First of all to clarify Super Owl is not a streaming service for audiobooks so it's quite different from what you're doing (we are aggregating spoken word audio podcasts for download). As yet, we also are not related to anything in the book space and our future plans don't include audiobooks.
Owls and audio are what we appear to have in common and I hope we can agree to differentiate ourselves in the market through product, logo, marketing, service etc. A quick search in the iTunes store reveals several apps with the word 'owl' included and I haven't seen this as a major setback or concern.
I hope this puts your mind at ease, however do feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss anything further. You can get in touch by e-mail or give me a call directly on *.
Best of luck on your launch.
Regards,
Aisha Yusaf'
--------------------------
I have now received the following letter as a reply to my e-mail - https://skitch.com/aishay/guy2a/letter2
So, here's my dilemma, do we change our name?... I don't feel like we are infringing any trademarks even though we do share the word 'owl' in both our business names. As we haven't even got a product out as yet we don't want to waste our time or money on legal fees or petty issues but rather concentrate on building, selling and promoting what we make.
The business that has been pursuing us on the trademark issue also doesn't have a product out (even though they speak as though they have) and although we can rebrand what we're doing, as it's not going to make or break our app, I am concerned that by doing so we are being bullied or coerced into doing something which is not even necessary.
At this stage no one really cares about our product and if we're lucky some people might care once its available to use and buy, so we don't have time or energy to spend on the wrong things (such as this).
Any advice, help or suggestions would be most appreciated.
Thanks :).
,Ask YC: Would you sign this if you were me?I was recently approached by a media agency looking to syndicate my blog's content, make it mobile friendly, find and put ads on it and revenue share with me. The term sheet is a bit daunting though. The highlights are:
I get 30% of adjusted gross advertising revenue.
'Initial term is one (1) year. Then, repeated one (1) year automatic renewals, unless Owner notifies [media agency] of non-
renewal in writing. [media agency] will have a 30-day exclusive right of first negotiation after any termination, expiration or non-
renewal. Owner will not have discussions or negotiations with any third party until 30 days of negotiation are complete.' That was initially 2 years but I got them to work it down.
I only get paid if my amount payable exceeds $1000.. which I think will take a long time.
I have to put their logo and slogan on my site.
'Owner must ensure that factual assertions in the Internet Blog are true and that no content on or linked to by the
Internet Blog will be obscene, pornographic, abusive, harassing, intimidating, deceitful, deceptive, offensive, or violate any
law, or any right of any third party (including copyrights, trademarks, or trade secrets), or disparage [media agency] or its products or
services.'
I'm a bit wary about that one as they hold me liable for what I write about.
'Disclaimer and Limitation of Liability. [media agency] makes no representation or warranties express or implied and
disclaims any implied warranty. In any case, [media agency]’s liability to Owner will be limited to $100.'
Feedback greatly appreciated. Also, is Google okay with essentially duplicate content floating around elsewhere on the net? I thought this was a big no-no..
,Ask HN: My ISP is injecting code to pages. What measures can I take?Today I saw a strange pop up entitled with logo of my ISP while I was browsing a random page. First I thought it was an ad added by site owner but when I check closely it was even on an another pop up. I checked the source and saw that it was clearly coming from somewhere else. An iframe added to page by using a JS script that sourced from direct IP address. No domain, just an IP and path. I am sure it wasn't part of site because iframe was just a static page. It doesn't contain any tracker links that can be seen every ad today. When I refreshed the page, pop up disappeared.
This page could be my mail or bank account or anything that might contain private information. Is there any practical way to prevent something like this?.
,Show HN: Logo tip - I used unicode characters for our logo.Hi, I'm learning to keep things simple.
I'm on startup no. 2 and have just put up a sign-up and twitter page. For the twitter page I needed a profile pic or logo of some sort so I've hacked together a little logo using unicode characters. Have a look: https://twitter.com/#!/TheSuperOwl
I think it looks quite cute, it's a temporary thing until we get a designer on board. The 2 founders are not designers (product person & developer) so we don't want this to hold us back with getting things going.
It's quite fun - I think we can play around with the unicode characters in the meantime. For example when our little Super Owl was first born his wings were down and now that it's been some time since he hatched his wings are lifted up.
I know this all probably sounds a bit trivial and silly in the grand scheme of things - but I thought I would share my wee unicode / logo hack with you. Maybe it's useful?.
,Neutron Drive Taken Down from Chrome Web StoreToday I received notice that my app https://www.neutrondrive.com/ was taken down from the Chrome Web Store for a branding violation. This sucks and I plan to fix the logo but it would have been nice to get at least a little heads up to fix the problem. The app has been featured by Google in several Google presentations and blog posts, and was one of the first apps to use the Google Drive Realtime API. While this has been great for me in terms of building traffic, Google has also used my app to showcase their Google Drive API. I've also volunteered to review their Google Drive course on Code School and given feedback in several of their trusted tester programs. I guess that doesn't even get you a courtesy call before they take you down..
,I made a “programming language” based on Cobol syntaxFirst of all, I'm sorry. I'm deeply sorry.
A few months ago, talking with some friends, we had the idea of developing a programming language just for the sake of it. We talked a little about it, design by committee got out of control and, a few days later, we abandoned the project completely without having written a single line of code.
I, though, have wanted to make a programming language my whole life and thus I kept trying to push the project forward by myself. I created a syntax loosely based on that of COBOL, made the worst compiler possible, wrote a somewhat slow "virtual machine" and released LDPL (ldpl.lartu.net) as a joke. Even the name is a pun on older, business oriented languages with BIG-CAPITAL-LETTER-NAMES. Again, like COBOL.
Fast forward a little and the joke got out of control.
I kept working on the language on my free time - pushing the not-very-ortodox but easy to code compiler forward - and the language got pretty usable. I mean, it's not a language you'd like to work with. It can't do everything. It's quite slow. It doesn't have any scoping nor functions (it does have sub-procedures, though) nor lambdas nor objects nor fancy data structures. Think of it more of an esolang than a serious language.
But what it lacks in efficiency and features, it makes up by having a cute dinosaur logo (poorly drawn as a joke on other mascots like the GCC gnu), unicode support, a full standard, comprehensive documentation, fancy examples and a half-written tutorial to be finished in the next days. It's also very portable, with binaries available for Linux amd-64 and ARMv8, Windows 64 bits and even Mac OS X for PowerPC processors!
So, if you are curious, bored or want to try something useless and new, I invite you to visit ldpl.lartu.net, download the LDPL source code or grab a precompiled binary for your operating system and code away.
I'm sure you won't hate it that much..
