,Ask HN: Is there a developer laptop that does not suck and is not a Mac in 2022?Background: I am sick of Apple's terrible customer support in my country. The most recent case was that of my friend who upgraded to a 14 inch Macbook Pro that stopped booting in 7 days. Since there is no return option in 30 days like in other geographies, he took it to Apple's authorised service centre (there are no Apple owned service centres in my country), and they put a big scratch right across the Apple logo. To add to this, Apple's customer support final response after more than a week of wasting his time was they would not be able to replace the display even when my friend sent clear voice recordings of the service centre employees accepting their mistake. He had to take the help of the local police who went with him to the shop to get a written statement that they would be replacing the display too along with the mainboard to fix the primary issue of dead laptop.

I have had my own horror stories in the past 10 years and I do not want to pay another dime to Apple for such pathetic treatment even under warranty.

,Restoring your iPhone 3G to OS 3.1.3I had installed iOS4 on my iPhone 3G and saw it crawl to becoming an iPaperWeight. It was horribly slow in launching every app and the keyboard was so slow it was unusable.

I had to restore it back to 3.1.3.

I ran into a few problems, here is how I got it to work:

1) Download 3.1.3 firmware for iPhone 3G from http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/.

2) You have to put your phone in the appropriate DFU mode for downgrades. (Whatever DFU stands for).

Switch of your iPhone, connect the USB cable to your mac / PC and put it in DFU mode with following instructions - Click the Home + Power On button for 10 seconds exactly - Release the power button and continue to click on Home. The display should never turn on, but your iTunes should recognize the phone and warn you about recovery mode.

3) Option click the restore button and choose the 3.1.3 firmware you downloaded. Let it perform the recovery.

4) If it fails with an error 1015, click ok. The firmware is restored, but you have to snap the phone out of the recovery mode now.

5) Download iRecovery as explained in this link.

6) As explained there, copy the libusb-0.1.4.dylib to /usr/local/lib and give it executable permissions.

7) Run ./iRecovery -s from the extracted directory.

9) I had to do fsboot thrice and nothing happened. It should have rebooted by now.

I did a power down and restarted the iPhone, and it was back up on 3.1.3 firmware.

If you run into problems or your phone is stuck in the recovery icon mode (USB port meets iTunes icon), please check out iRecovery and read all the possibilities there (there is a reboot command which might work, I didn't try it).

The downside to this is since my last iPhone backup was with iOS4, I could not restore it, I had to setup my phone as new. That is something I can live with.

Upside - the phone seems MUCH faster now ;)..
,Anyone interested in an open source web-based database diagramming tool?They say that scratching a programmer's itch starts an open source project. But we all know that the itch can take us only so far. Sooner or later, it is the community that needs to get around a FOSS project in order to keep the flame alive.

We all know that there are many side-projects which begin life on github with many stars and then just wither away due to lack of users and finally, the devs too stop taking interest.

Few months ago, I went through the same cycle when I started a side-project Visual Alchemist (https://github.com/prahladyeri/VisualAlchemist). It began its life as a tool to quickly draw a few database tables on a html canvas and export it as python-SQLAlchemy ORM code. I was working extensively on Python at that time, hence I started that project. As usual, the project just withered away after some time, but recently I've taken a renewed interest in its development again. This time, I don't have any particular interest in Python, but I want to start making VA a generic tool that outputs to multiple formats apart from python-sqlalchemy. Things on the feature-map include raw sql formats (mysql, postresql, etc.) and other ORMs.

I invite you all to collaborate in this project of mine. The people I need most right now are users, beta-testers and document writers.

These are a few things I've done until now to show my commitment towards VA project:

1. Refactored the old code, and added raw mysql as an output format.
2. Changed the license from MIT to GNU GPLv3 to demonstrate my commitment towards this project.
3. Updated the project README file with all project details such as governance style (meritocracy) and contact details.
4. Created a subreddit as a discussion room to discuss improvements in VA.
5. Using my hilariously limited GIMP skills, even created a VA logo.
6. Created a hosted version of VA.
7. Defined the feature maps, so the project can have some vision about what to develop in the near term..
,Ask HN: My MacBook Pro died 2x this week – Apple refuses serviceI have a 2 month old MacBook Pro (macOS 10.12.5). Drive with FileVault encrypted. Single partition harddrive, no linux/windows/etc.

Audio stopped working. USB devices stopped being recognized. Rebooted. Dead. When it comes to the Apple logo it instantly reboots, infinite cycle.

At the Apple Store this week. Told me they would change the logicboard but ended up just wiping the drive - „problem solved“. Reinstated my TimeMachine Backup. Good for 5 days. Just happened again.

Apple tells me the problem is „with my files“ not the hardware. With the drive being encrypted during boot is it even possible that the computer accesses anything I may have ever put on it?

,Ask YC: what is the future for browser extensions that personalize the web?i'm in a position where i can launch personalization on 30,000 browsers. but i havent - because i'm not sure what the equation with websites, my monetization options, and my users could be.

so i thought i'd ask the community, with the example of a few cases & existing scenarios:

[1] GetGlue provides a check-in mechanism for pages you visit. They basically augment the website with toolbars,links, 'like' buttons, badges & so on & even referral links to 3rd parties

[2] webmynd adds personalization to google

[3] rapportive adds links,and even third party raplets into gmail

Conduit[4] has a toolbar, that triggers personalization within webapges and is in the top 100 websites visited in the world today

my question :
1. will they alienate themselves from content destinations ( their 'hosts' )
2. will they be able to sell advertising on a space owned by the host

here in india, a comparable scenario would be when popular dailies occasionally had a pamphlet that the delivery boy would fill and make some money out of. but guess what. the newspaper sued the advertiser - not the 'enabler'.

that said, there are content/personalization cases where the line is more blurry and tilting towards what the user decides to do.

eg: skype extension[5] that takes numbers on a page and turns them into 'call via skype' buttons.

or more recently google's highlight extension [6] that let's you double click/select random phrases on any page, and it displays a google logo with a search button right there. does this account for monetizing 3rd party content? essentially users of this plugin could be on a yahoo or bing page, select a word and a google search would show up. it's kind of a tricky case of accountability IMHO.

if my users want a site personalized, does that justify my plugin personalizing content/websites?

Or perhaps Cooliris [7] & Facebook's [8] form of bizdev driven personalizaton offer a half way path. I think wibiya [9] has reached great scale and are in a position to offer a non-extension,publisher-controlled personalization experience.

My wife noticed a potential Easter egg in the logo. Preliminary Google searches turned up nothing. The bottom of both of the As make an M shape, which if you include the bottom of the M, makes 3 M’s. MMM is 3000 in Roman numerals. How’s that for coincidence? With all our precious science! 8
