hey everyone what's up and welcome back, to my channel or welcome to my channel, if you're new, i am actually going through the website, redesign process right now, hopefully it's done by the time this, video comes out but no guarantees if it, is i'll link it down below, but yeah i had definitely just outgrown, my old website and the logo as well i, had a, really beautiful logo created by a super, talented designer, but the direction of my business has, just changed since i got that logo, created and i just felt like it didn't, fit any longer with my strategic goals, for the business so, i knew it was time to get a new logo and, funny enough the stars aligned and, 99 designs reached out to me this video, was not sponsored, but they did reach out to me and asked, if i wanted to try out the service, and see how i liked it so they gave me a, little bit of credit to get a new logo, so full disclosure there, but i actually had to use 99designs, before for a client, as well so i thought that i would share, this with you if you're looking for a, new logo for yourself, if like me in the past you wanted to, help a client with a brand revamp but, you knew you didn't have like the design, chops to do it yourself, i think that this is a really, interesting solution so i want to share, some of the pros and cons, of using a site like 99 designs okay, so basically 99designs allows you to, host a logo design or, or any type of design contest, freelance designers can go ahead take a, look at your project brief and make a, mock-up for you, and then you know you get to choose from, a bunch of different mock-ups, and then refine them further before, doing the final, transfer for your files okay so what you, do is, you go in and you will choose to start a, contest now you can also choose to just, start a project and that's going to be, more, traditional a la upwork or fiverr or, something like that, just specific for designers so you can, do that as well if you want to basically, post a gig but i think what really makes, 99 designs magical, is the contest option so you'll go ahead, and click, start a new contest and then from here, you'll be able to browse through and see, a bunch of different, you know design projects that are, available on the platform, and then you can also just type into the, search bar exactly what you're looking, for obviously logo is there if we wanted, to do like, i don't know podcast there we go podcast, cover, so anyway once you decide what you want, it will ask you to select, some designs that you like it's just, kind of trying to get a feel for your, style, and what you're really looking for out, of your logo so you can, select a bunch of these and then it's, going to take you through a survey as, well, again just to understand your brand, style do you like more classic style, modern mature, youthful feminine it also asks you about, colors so choose the colors that you, like, and then it's time to write your brief, so your brief is really where you're, going to explain, what you want you know is there a, particular color, shape font name sub, subtext that you want in your logo like, really get as, specific as you possibly can or if you, have no idea what you're looking for, let the designers know that too say hey, go wild use your creativity i have no, idea what i want, now what i did in this section is i, actually pasted in some logo, examples of things that i liked as well, i know they already asked me in that, survey portion those were all, obviously kind of mock-ups and fake, brands so i pulled some logos that i, really liked from, existing brands and i made it very very, clear, in the brief that i did not want them to, copy in any way that that was just for, inspiration to get a feel for the style, i didn't want them to try to like make a, version two of any of the logos i shared, but i thought that that was, pretty helpful and none of the designers, ended up copying so i feel like that, worked pretty well, then this next page is going to ask you, which design package you want so this, starts at 299 but it can go all the way, up to 12.99 depending on, how advanced you'd like your designer to, be so i think i went with the gold tier, this made it so that only mid and top, level designers could actually, do mock-ups and propose their designs, for my project so i wasn't getting any, newbies you know, just brand new to the platform these, folks have been kind of vetted and have, completed a certain number of projects, already and then the rest of, the brief is pretty self-explanatory you, know you'll create a name you can decide, if you want like a consultant to help, you out, i wouldn't really choose that unless you, really really have no idea about design, you're like completely new to this world, and, you can also highlight the design if you, want it to sort of, be promoted so that more of those top, level designers will see it, and submit designs for it i didn't do, any of those things but what i did do, is i did the blind contest now this is a, free option it's not an add-on and i, highly recommend doing it because, what this means is that the designers, can't see, what other designs are being submitted, and i actually didn't realize this, option in the beginning and i started to, see, a bunch of designs that looked really, similar on the first day, and that's exactly why because people, would see you know what other people, have created and then just kind of try, to one-up them, but they all ended up looking really, really similar so when i, when i went back and edited my contest, and put, blind contest on that's when i really, started to get some cool, creative unique designs so i definitely, recommend doing that just from the start, then you just click on continue and you, launch your contest now what's going to, happen is over the next few days you're, going to start to see, designs come in you're going to get a, notification in your 99designs account, every time somebody submits a new design, so you can check it out or you can kind, of wait, and i would recommend after the first, maybe three days or so, two or three days to start rating the, designs that you're getting in, so you'll be able to add star ratings, and you can also add comments and say, hey i kind of like the direction this is, going, but can you do this instead or you know, whatever you need to do to communicate, with those early designers, and the ratings are really going to help, the designers, craft something that is perfect for you, if you just, wait seven days before giving any, feedback it's gonna be hard to kind of, reinvent the wheel so i was really, active and communicative, um something that the person who i, talked to from 99 designs told me is, she said don't do any five stars until, like later on in the process because, it makes sense i mean you're basically, saying like oh this is perfect and, nothing is perfect on the first draft so, the maximum stars i was giving things, was would be a four, and if i gave before i would say hey, this is almost there, i just want to see xyz and then just, kind of explain the differences that i, wanted to see, during the tail end of the contest so, maybe i think i did this day 4, or day 5 maybe i actually created a poll, so you can choose a number of your kind, of shortlisted designs, a handful of those put them together in, a poll and then get a link for the poll, and send this out wherever you want you, know you could easily email this if you, have a big, team in your office you could email this, out to the office you could email it to, clients, you could email it you know wherever you, wanted but i shared it in my instagram, stories, and i was actually shocked by the, results, i hadn't have done this i would have, went with a completely different logo, which is just so funny, you know don't get me wrong you should, definitely choose a logo that you, want not just what other people want for, you but, since my instagram story you know, consists mostly of clients and people, who, watch my content and take my courses i, felt like i didn't want to, take their you know their thoughts into, account here so the one that they chose, was actually kind of like, third on my list the other two people, did not like they actually got like, pretty poor ratings, and those those were my top two i was so, so shocked so, that was a really fun component because, you know you can get so, in your head about your brand and you, can feel like you know, everything and really it's important to, keep that target audience in mind of, course, so anyway once you decide on it and you, decide on sort of the winner, you go back and forth a little bit with, them you say hey you're the winner, um and then they will make any you know, last minute tweaks to the design before, officially handing it over and then you, sign a little mini contract, and get the files, [Music], my designer was great i think every, designer is going to give you know, something different in the package if, you will, one of the reasons that i actually chose, my designer is because he, included not just the logo but also a, sub mark he included a cool little, you know um yeah like sub mark i guess, you could say which i thought was great, and some different variations of the, logo for me which i don't think were, technically, required so you know he really went, above and beyond, he was very very responsive to me and, yeah just, gave great customer service and i, thought the design turned out beautiful, so i definitely would recommend it if, you're looking for a logo and you don't, know where to start, i think the cool thing about this tool, is that you get a wide, range of different design styles i find, it's actually sometimes, harder and i hate saying this because i, love all the designers i know in my life, but sometimes i found like, when a designer knows me personally it, actually, makes things a little bit harder because, they have like i said these preconceived, notions of who i, am i guess and what i would want so it, was helpful to have people i didn't even, know, just pitch for the project and only go, off of the words that i, said you know i don't even i didn't even, have a picture on here i mean obviously, they could google me if they wanted to, and i'm sure some, did but anyway i digress i thought it, was really helpful, what i will say is i don't know what, it's like from the designer perspective, you guys know that i'm all about making, sure that freelancers are paid fairly, and are happy and all of that so i want, to be transparent with that i'm not a, designer so for me, it was a really helpful experience but i, would guess, that this is probably a good thing to, try, if you are a new designer just looking, for portfolio work, or looking for new clientele i, definitely i'm not going to pretend to, know what the entire experience is like, though, as a designer so just keep that in mind, and if you are somebody who has, freelanced on 99 designs, i'd love it if you left a kind, respectful comment down below and let me, know what your experience was like, because i am curious what it's like from, the freelance perspective, but overall that's it i thought it was, fun i thought it was cool, and i am really happy with the final, Ask HN: How do I pick a logo? /$500 99designs contest with 70 entries/I kicked of a $500 99designs contest for my logo on Friday and received over 70 submissions already. I eliminated the most obvious suspects and asked friends and family for help.

The contest doesn't end until Friday and I wonder if there's an algorithm of sorts I can use to tackle existing designs and the ones that will, undoubtedly, be coming.

I understand that combinations of deep red and black don't make for a good web site built around the logo. I also find myself partial to the sci-fi 3D orbs -and- the flat shape designs like #55 or #11.

Other bits of interest... This is for a web-based compiler (source-to-source translator) between various trading languages. The aim is to enable users to migrate between platforms at a push of a button, without having to manually rewrite their strategies. The plan is to charge $400-600 per translation.

Translator is written in OCaml, the backend is OCaml with Ocsigen, uses Amazon SimpleDB and S3 and Plimus for payment processing..

I am the founder of a cyber security startup in Germany and we are at a point where our website is getting more and more traffic and customers start to ask for business cards to refer our services to other businesses. Soon our web app with new services will launch and it just doesn't have any proper design guidelines yet. Currently the logo is just the name in Roboto font and all presentations and documents are just plain text without any proper corporate design.

I have been doing some research and it seems like there is three main contenders for crowd sourced logo designs:

- fiverr
- 99designs
- designcrowd

But HN seems to have a bad opinion about each of these platforms. Regarding the covid situation I'd also much rather pay a creative person directly without intermediaries taking a 20% cut. But the problem stands on where to find them.

So here's my question: Where do you people get your Logo and Corporate Designs these days?.
