Chomsky on Google's contribution to 'fake news'Excerpt from video for those who, like myself, prefer to read:

Google talk interviewer: “How do you think Google can and should handle the fake news problem? We have a big hammer. We’re looking for nails.”

Chomsky: "Well, by not contributing to it."

"See, advertising’s a very interesting phenomenon. Any of you who’ve taken an economics course know that... the marvels of the market that we’re supposed to admire and worship are because the market is based on informed consumers making rational choices... Turn on your television set. Do you see efforts by corporations to create... informed consumers making rational choices? Is that what you see when you see an ad for cars? If we had a market system... when General Motors is advertising a car, what you would see is a list of the characteristics of the car, along with a report by Consumer Reports saying what’s wrong with it and so on... But you don’t see that.

"Huge amounts of capital are expended every year to try to undermine markets... by creating uninformed consumers making irrational choices; and driving them to consumerism...

"That’s what ought to be taught in economics courses: massive efforts by the business community to undermine markets."

,Show HN: Example Data Service – Lorem Ipsum back ends by @Draftbit (W18)Hey there HN!

We've created an easy way for you to get started building your next app or no-code project without needing to build the backend first. With over 30 different tables of data, you can use these tables as a great starting point during the design, development, and prototyping phase of building your next app.

Check it out at: https://example-data.draftbit.com/

Here are some of the types of apps the data might help you build:

- Stock Trading or Crypto Trading

- Dating Apps

- Restaurant Guides or Local Guides

- Addressbooks, Contact Lists, or Team Directories

- News or Article focused apps

- Todo Lists or Productivity

- Ecommerce / Shopping Apps

- Music or Podcast Apps

- Cars or Enthusiasts Apps

- Social Apps

- Books or Personal Reading List Apps

Many of the tables are linked together with one-to-many or many-to-many relationships and can be queried and interacted with just like a real REST api. So for example, Stocks and Stock Holdings are linked by Users.

You can interact with all of this data in a normal way: via API that outputs JSON. You can do any HTTP method on these APIs, like GET or POST, but you can also filter, sort, slice, or paginate the data via URL parameters, just like you would with data from a real REST api.

When you start building with real (or at least real-looking) data, you make better design and development choices along the way. You can use this service as a set of example API's for testing your front end development efforts, for building apps in your favorite no-code tool (like @draftbit), or if you just need some example JSON of a certain type.

The service is free and does not require any auth or api keys. We'll be adding more data and examples over time! The data used for this service was created or gathered from creative commons and open source sources. Some of it is real data released for machine learning purposes.

Thanks!

Team Draftbit (W18)

,What are the fields where the next big thing is pretty close?I think it's important to follow the fields that are pretty close to be changed.
If we look back than we will see that the change happened in fields where the technology was ready for practical application. I tried to think about it in terms of everyday problems that we are ready to solve.

Here is my list:

1. Human Resource management revolution.

Blockchain technology could make possible "honest recommendations". Imagine if you could find people based on recommendations (started from high school and common around the world) from other people and all of theme are stored in immutable database. It will remove HR specialists, you just need to look for who recommended your employee, and what is the "status" of recommender.

2. Remote meetings

Now we already can work out of the office. But face to face comunication is still the most effective way of communication. Virtual reality will make remote meeting more effective and realistic.

3. Everyday routines automatization

Internet of things are already in our lives, and there are already critical mass of apps exist. I think it will boost in next 2 years on how we manage all around us: cars, appliances, gadgets...

4. Delivery services

Drones are already tested by amazon. We just need delivery services start using them.

5. Self driving cars

Tesla and google cars. It's just a matter of time when it will become popular.

And what is your list? It's also interesting to see a list where the "next big thing" already happened for the last 2 years..
,Tell HN: Musings on the flaws of how computing is taught in most colleges (USA)I am writing this after doing programming very badly for quite a period of time and learning mostly from publicly available course contents of university courses (mostly the USA).

Observations:

1. Universities pick the most popular language of the time and teach a course on intro to prog/compsci in a very unstructured way. Now the choice is Python.

2. The upper level courses are really good. The lower level courses are that bad.

Now, let me explain.

Whenever someone asks for a suggestion for how to learn programming or start with learning computer science, the commonest suggestion is to look for MIT's 6.0001 or Harvard's CS50 because they are popular.

Hear me out. When an apprentice goes to an expert car mechanic to learn the mechanic doesn't list the car parts and functions and then leave the apprentice on their own. Of course he lists parts and functions but along with that he solves real issues with cars and asks the apprentice to watch over and learn. While solving a problem the mechanic points out why a part is there and what its function is and why and how it malfunctions and how to narrow down to the exact part. Similar for a resident surgeon. The difference between teaching grammar versus how to speak and articulate your thoughts in a language.

A good essay on a similar note: https://jsomers.net/i-should-have-loved-biology/

My complain is that intro to CS courses don't teach problem solving and hence computing (or programming) as a means to do so. The courses mentioned above start with a language and discusses a set of features each lecture and solves some minimally interesting problems in each class. Not the other way round. Like I have a problem, this is how I approach solving it. So I need these kind of functionalities to solve it and our language of choice gives us this. If the language doesn't have the feature we build it up from the basic constructs (a very good point to demonstrate we can build almost everything we need from basic constructs).

Similar things happen in Data Structures and Algorithms classes. Instead of teaching why this data structure came to being or how to design algorithms the courses focus more on listing them and analysing them. Where is the fun in that for a beginner?

Maybe SICP is an exception but it is really not an intro to programming book. It requires quite a bit of mathematical maturity. And also it is no longer used in any university.

I am not talking about the art component of programming. It is acquired through experience and practice only. Not in any other way. Once an art form becomes useful and maintainable it becomes another rule in the rule book.

Upper level courses are good because the students taking them are already supposed to know the lingo and it is just a way to communicate ideas for the students to play with. Just like teaching an able cycler how to do certain tricks.

P.S:

1. Now, I am not a computing expert or a education researcher. I just blurted out what I faced while learning. What I think would have been a better way to introduce such a wonderful field.

2. Another point: You want more people in your field (CS). Open up your core course contents and share them to the world. It's 2022. What is the benefit of closing the entry and keeping the upper gates opened? (I have seen upper level instructors are more generous in sharing course content)..
,Graphics and UI/UX Designer wanted-THE CONCEPT

Were an upcoming peer-to-peer car club for sports cars and luxury automobiles that allows members who own high-end cars to loan or rent them out to other members of our service on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Our mission is to bring luxury and sports-cars rentals at bargain prices to consumers by eliminating the overheads of operating a commercial fleet and distribution network, and allowing members to rent from each other directly online.

-THE TEAM

We are based in San Francisco CA and you will be part of the early founding team that brings this product to market. The founders are seasoned entrepreneurs and have had multiple successful exits in the Internet space.
This is a rare chance to get involved really early with a startup with a great founding team and reap the benefits that come with it. And did we mention, we have A list investors on board.

-THE ROLE AND OUR EXPECTATIONS

The position involves doing key web design and graphics for the website/product. As you will be the first and only UI and graphics designer, you will have a lot of flexibility and freedom in layouts and design. We're looking for a designer who can think like a product manager and is comfortable wearing both hats.

We're going to assume you're a bad-ass at Photoshop, CSS and HTML. We're going to assume that you have a keen eye for design, usability and product. Past experience building Web 2.0-style products with slick interfaces, AJAX and similar technologies will certainly help, but is not required.

-HOW TO APPLY

We respect your time and therefore are going to make this very simple. Just send us a short email with the following:
1. Quick Intro and why you're interested (aside from the obvious 'I need a job...')
2. At-least 5 Links to your portfolio or previous work.
3. Anything extra that will help us see how awesome and swashbuckling you really are.

If we like your work, you'll hear from us within 24 hours.

-MOOLA!

Competitive compensation, with all the standard bells and whistles of benefits. Were also open to having you working on this on the side (if you have a day job and dont want to leave it just yet).
At this stage, your portfolio and previous work (even if it is at school) will be the most important thing we look at.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

Please send your resume and portfolio to :

,Ask HN: What costs go down in the Bay Area?I've participated in some of the recent threads on the price shock and anxiety of moving to the Bay Area, and for sure I'm nervous about my housing cost going through the roof, as well as having a very poor grasp of how to navigate SFUSD registration. For those, I think the strategy is to rent in the attendance area of the schools we want (spending more, of course!), as it seems the only factor we can control is the weight given to where you live.

Anyhow, I've also gotten to thinking through where I'll spend less in SF versus where I live in Maine, and I'm wondering what else I might be missing that I can look forward to?

Costs going down for us in SF -

Utilities - CA might be expensive, but it's not 16c/kwh + 1000 gal of heating oil expensive.

Car Registration - Somehow it's actually looking to cost less, even before going from 3 cars to 1.

Commute/Transit Expense - We basically drive two cars 50 miles each round trip right now, with work/school/kid activities. Muni and a neighborhood school will eliminate a lot of that.

Travel - The Bay Area has 3 airports with competition to more or less everywhere, even with UA having a fortress hub in SFO.

Weather - OK, weather itself isn't a cost, but clearing the driveway 20 times a winter isn't free, even if you DIY. SF doesn't have that problem. Not only does it not snow, but there won't even be a driveway!

Anyway, yeah, I've already figured out rent will be out of control, Muni will suck, etc. But there's a lot to look forward to - what else should we be adding to this list?.
,Show HN: Traffic Champ – Beat traffic, find parking spots easilyHi HN,
I am Gilbert co-founder of TrafficChamp https://traffichamp.firebaseapp.com/ .

Traffic congestion costs the United States $3bn each year and a subset of that is people trying to look for parking. We own a car but after finally making it through traffic, another nightmare of looking for where to park kicks, and we spend money and lots of time looking for spots.

But what if you could instead exchange your car to another driver going somewhere and they return your car on-demand when you need it? That's why we are building Traffic Champ.

How it would work;

List your car on our site and we will find other car-owning drivers who are interested in using it
Drivers pick exchange spots which they use to drop off there cars to other drivers and you simply go do whatever you want.
In case you need your car back, you simply request it back.
Feel free to reach out for any feedback or questions..
,Ask HN: Why doesn't the USA have a great car insurance comparison site?I recently (2 weeks ago) moved to San Francisco, and am excited to be here. But lots of things seem backward compared to places I've lived before (UK, China).

In particular: I was looking for car insurance last week. I left the UK in 2010, and even then there was more than one car insurance comparison site that showed firm quotations from many insurers. So I only ever had to fill in two forms: one on the comparison site, and another on whichever insurer turned out to be cheapest.

Perhaps I'm just missing something, but I haven't found anything similar in the US. I found a couple of comparison sites, but:

- instead of asking for all the information needed for underwriting, they ask for <10 pieces of info, AND

- instead of returning a sortable list of quotations from multiple companies, they return a list of insurance companies and indicative price ranges. To get actual quotations, I need to visit each individual site and fill in each individual application form.

I must be missing something: either this exists and I just didn't find it, or there's some structural reason why no one has started (or succeeding in building) a proper comparison site that does something similar to the UK's Money Supermarket.

Curious to hear from anyone working in auto insurance or who has looked at this problem..
,Tool for ranking your preferences, by doing pairwise comparisons (Elo algorithm)This is an online tool I wrote that helps you to sort a list of items by importance. You paste in a list of items, then you are asked to compare them two at a time. As you go, it shows you an updated sorted list. It uses the Elo ranking algorithm, so that you still get decent results even if you don't do all pair combinations.<p>Why did I write this? My wife and I are thinking about moving and there are several dozen preferences we have, and I wanted to know which were our top 10 and in what order. You can use this for ranking any list of preferences: things you are looking for in a new car, favorite skills/interests to focus on when deciding on a new career, etc..
,Ask HN: Where should I live?I'm looking to make a move from Brisbane Australia (not from there) and have the privilege of being able to look for a job and move pretty much anywhere. Where should I live?

Wish list:

1) Very warm climate (Brisbane has this)

2) Decent tech scene (or in a near enough timezone to enables remote work for US or EU employers) (Brisbane barely has this)

3) ACTUALLY diverse and cultured (Brisbane has gotten a lot better in the past ten years, but falls well short here IMO)

4) Non-car centric with good public and alternative transport opportunities (Brisbane falls well short here too)

The ultimate city for me would have the huge population and excellent public transport of Tokyo, the diversity of NY, Miami, London and Paris, the climate of Singapore and the non-car centrism of Amsterdam.

Short list so far:

* Barcelona?

* Lisbon?

* Miami?

* Austin?

* Tel Aviv?

* ??? Any Latin American or African cities I'm missing? Maybe Fortaleza, Recife, Salvador Bahia, Lagos, Dakar ???

Cities like NY, Toronto are diverse and have lots of opportunities but are too cold. Also not that great on public and alternative transport.

Sydney, Melbourne and Vancouver are too cold in winter and not that diverse. Also not that great on public and alternative transport.

Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen are very non-car centric but too cold.

Yes, I'm too picky and probably asking for the impossible =) but would love to hear more suggestions.
,Looking for a cofounder for MobMov. Featured in NY Times, NBC, more...Project: mobmov.org

Disruptive film distribution: challenging traditional cinema-based licensing and distribution with a widespread community-powered network of car-powered drive-ins.

I don't know if this is really the crowd for it, but my mobmov project is showing some serious potential to finally take off. But I don't have the time or resources to drive it. I'm looking for a true founder-type to join me.

I've been running it for over 5 years. Without any PR at all, it's been written up in Time, AP News wire, BBC, New York Times .com front page (last week), BBC radio, NBC tv and tons of other places. We have over 12K in the mailing list now, and our SF/LA shows draw 150+ people. I've been approached by several agencies looking to sponsor, but nothing major has panned out yet (mostly my fault for not following up).

How is it a business? Well, for starters, we have a nationwide network of both chapter drivers doing shows and members interested in watching movies. We're one step and a few phone calls away from doing trailer deals, sponsorships ('lit by InFocus'), charging admission or membership; heck, disruptive film licensing and distribution are a possibility.

I'm posting this because, frankly, while I enjoy running the shows, I have no time at all to 1) work on the site, the code is a good two years old; so much can be done with it, geolocation, sms, etc 2) make the calls and connections needed to make it a 'real' business.

If this idea excites you, and you see the potential, and you're a talented entrepreneur, email me: bryankennedy@me.com

I'd be interested in seeding it with some capital as well..
,Ask HN: What's in your current reading list?A mostly current reading list: (inspired by Josh Fraser's post http://www.onlineaspect.com/2010/07/23/my-3-rules-about-reading/#idc-container)

I've been giving away books for years, awesome habit! I finally got rid of all my old gaming books (hundreds) and their in the trunk of my car now ready to be dropped off at a nearby gaming store. ,Ask HN: Has anyone here run a contest before?I'm doing some pre-launch marketing for a project that won't be complete for another couple months. In addition to a typical content marketing strategy, I want to try running a simple giveaway contest with the goal of building a mailing list and eventually a community around the startup.

I know I'm not the first person to try this so I'd love to hear from anyone who's already gone down this path. Here's a few questions that I'm sure anyone else thinking of running a contest would find useful.

What startup was your contest for?
What did you give away?
How did you get the word out?
How long did it run for?
What were the results?

Our contest is for a project called Shadenut (http://shadenut.com). It's an app to help professional and DIY mechanics look up the technical details of any car. I'm think of giving away a fancy torque wrench[1] since it's something that every person in our market needs and will put to good use.

I'll be sure to recap the details of my own contest here when it's complete.

,Die paper dieSo I happened to be between switching jobs and I have an offer that I am tentatively going to take up till something better from my pipeline (hopefully) confirms. Yesterday morning I had to meet with the recruiter at the consulting company through which I would be staffed to this major financial firm. Both, the consulting company and the end client company are fairly big. It goes without saying that they do thorough background checks. I have had to fill out an extensive background check form (forms?). I have had to do two(!) drug screening tests done, and one finger printing done.

All this is fine. I guess I can understand they need to do their due diligence and check me for my background and so on. What drives me nuts is this. I spent about two hours filling out between 15 - 20 forms that either the consulting company or the client company needed. What's more, they had me fax half the documents earlier. Upon confirmation of the receipt of the faxes, I naturally went ahead and shredded the faxed documents. After all who would need them now, right? Wrong. They wanted to see the original forms I had faxed to them? What? Well they had to start the process earlier, but needed the originals for their records. I agonized at first, but then soon complied by the craziness and filled out the forms again (and to match what the original faxed documents said). To the end of that I joked, so where do you keep all these paper records? Akin to a server room, do you have like a paper vault kind of a room? No, they send them to an offsite location. Oh okay.

So that was that and after a long day of taking care of what seemed like an endless list of errands I fell asleep on my couch. I wake up suddenly with a sweat running down my back. What seemed like a nightmare was just piles of papers or so I remembered a few minutes later. The earlier incident had hit me in the subconscious that led to a great woah moment and that I'll get to a minute, but first let me explain what formed the subconscious and why it was jolted.

I have two giant plastic boxes that hold all my papers. Right from currently-important papers (degrees, birth certificate, visa papers etc.) to once-important papers (old rent receipts, bought property documents, old car documents etc) to I-may-need-these-every-one-in-a-while papers (my utility bills, pay-stubs, bank statements) to remind-me-again-why-I-have-these papers (shopping receipts, really old parking tickets, useless information brochures etc.). I started them out nice and organized but over the years of constant abuse (dumping of collected mail and retrieving documents as and when needed), it has become a messy monster of a paper pile. In fact it is so disorganized I almost always have to ask my wife which box a certain document may be in. I dread the thought of having to organize it some day in the future. The irony of these boxes is that they are both green in color while what I keep in them suggests nothing close to green.

Every once in a while, when checking my online account for either my utility company or my bank, I would be prompted to go green, go paperless. And I would deny it. And it is for the same reason I have had my shredder collect dust over the years without using it for what it was created to do - well, shredding, what else?. I figure what if I need a certain document, or a certain utility bill or something else for something petty as renewing my license from the DMV. Would I have access to these documents later if I went paperless now? I choose not to. I don't have the time to understand that there may be way to retrieve / print e-documents from my utility company or my bank. Here I am with stacks of papers. Disorganized. And yet I want more of it because I am too afraid I won't have the right paper when I need it.

Papyrophobia. I just checked on google that's what they call it. Fear of paper. That is what I have. And that is exactly what was triggered further by this incident earlier today. And here's my chain of thoughts after waking up from that dream that led to the woah moment I was talking about.

Thought process 1 (solution to current problem) : why doesn't the consulting company create / utilize some sort of an e-document system where people like me could simply fill the forms and submit. The company could simply print and store in either soft / hard format.

Thought process 2 (refinement of business idea): well what if I switch jobs again and have to fill similar forms again? Why not create a employee / employer setup where people could send each other documents, they could fill them online with known personal information and e-sign, and then store for personal records.

Thought process 3 (enhancement): think of forms at the doctors office, legal / accountants offices etc. why fill out forms ever? Simply take a picture, or scan/email, or fax, get the document ocr-ed and filled in with standard info, ready for you to verify / print completed form

Thought process 4 (level up): shouldn't I have all my papers (yes the two green boxes) scanned, ocr-ed, tagged, backed up? Doesn't everybody have the same bulkloads of papers stacked up high in the corners of their houses? Shouldn't the consulting company do this too with all the papers in their 'offsite' paper vault? Shouldn't all companies do this too?

Thought process 5 (level up to woah moment): what the hell are we doing in this age of computers working with papers everywhere. Is this what the future looks like? Would people a 100 years from now still be working with papers? I think they will have a hard time understanding why we needed papers. If everything paper can be stored, distributed, searched, and backed up digitally while being so cost-efficient, space-efficient, and carbon-footprint-efficient, why print? Ever? I am not particularly green, but I have an issue with papers. I say let's end the madness and stop the crazies from cutting down anymore trees. Let there be no more copiers and shredders and scanners and fax machines wasting all our office spaces. Let there be no more mail clutter on our desks or for that matter let there be no more postal services (well, you may need them for the christmas gifts, but you get the point). Let there be no more green boxes or blue or red boxes holding any of our papers. Let's make our offices and our personal lives a lot more efficient and clutter free. Let's end the insanity we call paper. Let's start the fire. Die paper die.

tl;dr - too much paper clutter; how do I get rid of it?

Burning questions for now:

1) Am I alone (and crazy)? Or is this a common problem?

2) If you do solve this problem, how do you do it?

3) Do you see a business potential here?.
,Ask HN: Stand-up desks on a startup budgetI'm interested in getting an adjustable-height desk that allows me to stand up for part of the day, and also solve the more general ergonomic problems of inflexible desk height that inhere in the tense relationship between monitor height, chair height, armrest height, etc.

I suppose in an optimal scenario it would be an assembly that would contain a holder for my desktop tower, and be wide enough to accommodate all my accessories.

I've looked at some of the stuff like Joel Spolsky recommends in 'Desks' (the Details Series 7), which was my introduction to the whole concept:

http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2008/06/06.html

A Rectangular Series 7 would be perfect:

http://details-worktools.com/products/series-7-rectangular/

However, while it is certainly an option, list price is well over $1500 for a fairly entry-level configuration, including delivery and installation. That's a little bit tough for a bootstrapped company just trying to make it.

I was wondering if anyone had any alternative recommendations that are a little more practical from an affordability perspective, even at the cost of lacking some of the refinement and polish of the higher-end products.

I'm not too particular on electric motor vs. pneumatic style, but since I -- like many programmers -- am kind of OCD about environmental factors, I think trying to find a height from an infinite range every time I adjust the thing would drive me nuts, so the preset settings that come with an electric motor are definitely a huge plus.

I'm going to stay away from any do-it-yourself suggestions because on the one hand, I do want a finished product and not something completely jury-rigged, but on the other hand, trying to build something sophisticated just... wouldn't be playing to my strengths. :-) (Ask anyone who ever deluded themselves into thinking for even a moment that they could count on my competent help in some sort of home or car repair or other do-it-yourself activity.).
,Ask HN: Too kool for school, but nowhere else to goDear Hacker News,

I'm a university student who is interested in leaving school early. I feel that I can learn most of the material more easily on my own, and the high cost is sending me into a lot of debt. But I'm hesitant to just leave for a number of reasons. I'm not sure of my chances of getting the kind of job I'm looking for without a Bachelor's degree. I'd like to do a startup, but I don't have much cash and I would have student loans to pay back. And on top of that, my schooling has been somewhat abnormal, which could complicate things. Any advice?

About me: I'm currently 18 years old, with a couple of thousand dollars in the bank, but with nothing but a laptop to my name (not even a car). I left high school at 15 to attend Bard College at Simon's Rock (http://www.simons-rock.edu/), a liberal arts school specifically for early college students. I did well there; I took a lot of CS courses, kept a 3.8, and was the founding president of the Turing Club. At Simon's Rock, you typically either go for two years, get an AA, then transfer, or you stay for the full four years and write a thesis. I opted to transfer, since I thought a degree from somewhere more well-known would be more useful.

So this year I'm at the University of Edinburgh. I was admitted as a 2nd year student, which was somewhat disappointing, but partially made up for by the school's one-extra-year Master's program. The school has an excellent curriculum, which is the main reason I chose it, but it's expensive for non-EU students, and I've found the actual classes to be mostly useless as I can learn the material on my own more easily.

As for my qualifications/experience: Probably most significantly, I've been programming for ten years now. I've mostly done small projects and stuff on my own, so there's not much work on the internet that I can point at for examples, unfortunately, but I do have some things I'm in the midst of cleaning up to post online.

I've got experience in a fair number of languages and paradigms. My go-to language is Python, but I'm comfortable in Haskell, C, Java, Javascript (plus HTML/CSS), and Scheme (as well as MIPS assembly). I also have some experience with Ruby, C++, Io, Smalltalk, Lua, and Forth. I've coded a bunch of stuff over the years, including toy VMs, programming languages, games, web stuff, various 'system' prototypes (user interfaces and the like), higher-order programming libraries, one-off math stuff, and the occasional script.

As for school courses, I've done data structures and algorithms, theory of computation, formal and natural languages, functional programming, software engineering, and computer organization and systems (twice, actually, due to transfer weirdness). Outside of CS, I've done math through linear algebra, discrete math and counting, a few years of writing/philosophy/literature courses, as well as physics, German, linguistics, Buddhism, electronic music, political ideologies, and economics & technology. Plus probably a few more I'm forgetting.

My favorite parts of computer science are models of computation and human-computer interaction. You can probably tell I'm a language nut from the list above; this is of course closely related to my interest in models of computation. While the 'pure' models like the lambda calculus et al are cool/useful, what I'm really interested in is ways of coherently combining different models in an effort to make expressing complex computational ideas more naturally.

And that obviously ties into human-computer interaction. But beyond languages and models of computation, I'm also interested in system and interface design. The two are, again, closely related; while system design incorporates more non-human components, both are about creating useful, efficient, and complex interactions while maximizing ease-of-use and minimizing bloat. I think we're witnessing a revolution on the human level of interface design, with new input modes (touch, motion-sensitive input, etc.) and new form factors (especially portable, location-aware devices). And I think that there is an overhaul of large-systems design coming as well; we've moved further and further away from modular designs like those in Unix and Smalltalk, but we're going to have to reinvent them in order to really draw the potential out of our many-devices always-connected world.

Hopefully that gives you a picture of the sort of things I'm interested in and of my situation. In general, I'm really just interested in working on a useful product which makes peoples' lives easier, from webapps to system code; but the more of the above stuff it included the more I'd be interested, and the better I'd probably be at it.

So I guess I'm not looking for a single answer, so much as some advice. But if it helps: How would I go about getting a job that suits me, especially without a Bachelor's and with frustratingly few connections? Would it be a just terrible idea to quit school at this point? Obviously it's hard to judge whether I could handle a startup, but assuming I could, how could I make it work with minimal cash and student loans to pay?.
,Ask HN: Is it worth it to list your car on Getaround or Turo? What I care about is the long term true of cost ownership.
I don’t care about the short term benefits.

Things to account for that I can think of:

- taxes you pay on revenues from Turo / Getaround

- Mileage your car takes (which means you can sell it for less and you need to pay for maintenance)

- Fees these services take (~40%)

- Looks like the main factor for car depreciation is time and not mileage (which is in favor of those sharing services)..
,Ask HN: How to introduce someone to programming concepts during 12-hour drive?I won't go into details to keep this brief, but I'm going to spend a week with this client of mine's kit, and I'm supposed to teach him enough about programming for him to figure out if it's something he might be interested in pursuing.

He's about 20, and still struggling to finish high school, but he's smart (although perhaps a little weird).

I thought about introducing him to touch typing just to get a useful skill out of this regardless of the outcome. Then, I thought that during this week I'd teach him HTML and enough CSS to see what's used for. I'm thinking that if he gets excited about typing code and seeing things happening he'll want to study more and learn more advanced stuff in the future and perhaps even make it his profession (this is what my client hopes will happen).

Now, part of this trip is a 12-hour drive. I thought I could use this time to introduce him to simple programming concepts. For instance, if asked to list all steps involved in starting a car, most people would say:

- turn key
- start car

That could turn into an infinite loop, though. A better way would be:

- turn key
- start car
- if it starts, exit
- if it doesn't start, repeat 3 more times
- if it still won't start, call a mechanic

Stuff like this—that anyone can understand, that can be explained without looking at a computer, but that it's still useful.

Any idea what I could talk about? Examples, anecdotes, anything..
,Ask HN: If you were starting another business, what would be in your todo-list?I've been trying to get a business of my own started since I was around 16 years old. Life didn't really go how I expected it to go (I've heard this is normal). I've tried a few different times to start a variety of businesses and all of them have failed. I learn something every time but I'd really like a shortcut. So then it hit me, "I should ask people who've been there before!".

My business-attempts have involved SaaS, Gutter Cleaning, Car Detailing, contract Web Development, and so on... Usually, I'd have some sort of plan laid out, but most of that plan involved building a really nice website. That isn't all it takes to succeed, though, as I've learned.

If you were starting a new business with low funds (assume less than ~$1k), involving any effort you'd pursue, what would your Todo-List look like?

How would you prioritize your list? How much time would you put into each item?

I know this is a vague question, which is okay because I'm looking for vague answers. Even vague answers to this question would lead me to a more accurate understanding of this sort of process.

Thanks in advance!.
,A comprehensive reading list on self-driving electronics?I want to build a self-driving car, actually to mod a current car to have self-driving capability.

I'm from an AI (artificial intelligence, in case) background, I can do most of the control on simulated environment, like using computer vision to recognize lanes, road signs, .etc then produce steering angle for the driving wheel in real-time.

However I don't know how to drive by wire, physically (or should I say electronically). Is there a compiled list somewhere I can teach myself on that? Say, which controller do I look for? how to connect it to my Jetson board?

And pardon me if the question is too vague/broad, but I need an entry point.

Thanks.

GT7’s brand central etc feels a bit empty or missing most of the time, so I made a list of companies that should return or make their first time appearance in GT. I feel like this list would make brand central etc more interesting to view/buy cars.

[Will Buxton] Lovely touch from Scuderia Ferrari. They’re running the original logo on their cars this weekend to mark 90 years since Enzo first carried the symbol on his Alfa Romeos as a mark of respect to WW1 flying ace Francesco Baracca, who’d painted the horse on his planes.

Buddy of mine up in Canada sent this to me. I’ve never seen this kind of Lincoln before. It looks like someone modified older Navigator. As for the retro old car behind it, I can’t make the logo out on it. Anyone know?

Due to the disappointment of Rockstar missing us with the new vehicle, I decided to share a list of cars I would love to see on GTA online even though I'm fully aware that I can keep dreaming. Tell me what your dream list would be and what do you think about mine.

It can be done if done right. I’ve had a few DM’s so ask me anything here and I’ll try to help! 6 active cars as of this week, 7 total by next week-ish when we re-list a car we temporarily took off.
