Ask HN: Best organizations to networkI'm looking at changing careers (and possibly countries) from a mathematics teacher (physics undergraduate degree from 2014) to (almost) anything else.
I'm in a small town, however, without much in the way of connections outside that town. What are some of the best possible organizations to join in a bigger city that would allow me to network more? I know of general fraternities, such as the Freemasons, as well as volunteer groups such as Rotary Club and the Lion's Club, etc., but would those actually be effective to join for networking? Especially if I wanted to move and find a job outside of the United States? Any suggestions, basically, on the best ways to find people to network with, for someone who isn't in a big city and can't go to a lot of meetup-like things?.
,Ask HN: A matching site for intellectual/study partners? Here's an idea for a site/service that I would love to use. This must have been tried before, but I can't find a lot of examples:
A matching/partnering service for intellectuals, or people with those interests. For example, let's say I want to read a big/hard/long book, on any topic, with someone else. I could create a pitch for some reading project or course of study: create a post where I discuss what I want to get out of it, disclose any prior knowledge or training, etc..--then let anyone who's interested propose to read/study/research with me.
I know book clubs are a thing. I found https://bookworm.club, a reader matching service posted here[1] less than a year ago, but what I am thinking about is a little different. It would be broader matchmaking service than just book reading, applicable to any project involving committed study or research. Maybe I'm good at math, and I'm looking for someone who's interested in doing a self-guided intro to quantum mechanics. Or I'm interested in learning more about early US colonial history, and I want someone to help me pick the five most important books on King Philip's War to skim and synthesize. Or I have an idea for a robotics hobby project, and I want to find someone with a technical background that's complementary to my own. Or I've always gotten stuck on the fourth book of Proust's In Search of Lost Time, and I want to find someone to go through it with me and discuss every two weeks. Anything--you define the terms.
I know formal classes and education are an approximate solution here, but I think that a person's commitment and interest are often higher in cases of self-study, because your motivation comes from being clear with yourself about what you want to get out of your efforts. Self-studiers are a special group. There are also a lot more niche interests than formal classes.
My guess is there are actually a good number of smart people who want to do these things, but they give up because the chance of finding a suitable partner is low. The people with the same interests are often irregularly distributed. and feel isolated. A service that would work at internet scale, especially with more people willing to do this over Zoom, would help to match a lot of these ardent intellectual loners on the long tail of interests.
My initial sense is that a good match between prospective partners would be hard to discern algorithmically, since so much about intellectual fit depends on the nuances of what they want to do. So the actual matching would involve pitching, conversation back and forth, negotiation, etc.
Anyways, can someone point me to previous efforts in this area? General thoughts are of course welcome too.

,Macros for HTML---good or bad?I've been looking at both less.js and more.js with the idea of adding constants/definitions to my CSS code. While doing so it occured to me that, that wasn't what I actually needed. What I need is to be able to give arbitrary Unicode meaningful names no matter where I use them. As a for instance, ♔ is the hex version of 'Black Chess King'. Clearly the official 'name' isn't particularly easy to use, but it is quite descriptive. What I'd prefer, is something more along the lines of —, say &bking; but at a guess the W3C folk play bridge (hence &club;, &spade; etc.) and not chess. This suggests to me that a macro processor would be a solution. Having said that, I'm also aware of how such things are abused (see: 'C' and 'C++') and wonder what those who actually code in HTML or adjunct material would feel about such a thing?.
,Ask HN: Dipping my toes with artificial intelligence and what to expect? (CS)Recently I got accepted into computer club on my faculty. I got opportunity to choose on which team I would like to be, where we would be working on projects and workshops. Before, I got my interests mainly in OS/Systems programming, I had few smaller projects, solid knowledge of C, Data structures, Memory and Assembly. (started writing my Kernel and hopefully it would grow in some smaller OS). One of the colleagues asked me why wouldn't I join Ai team, and I was like nah it is too high level and full of black magic for me. But, I do not know why, that possibility started to resonate in my head for days. Firstly I had some concerns, besides looking at some stuff and seeing all those black boxes and magic happen in ~100 lines of python code.
- I am not sure how much math is needed. And I ask that because I am not having a lot of math on my faculty. First I was chasing EE degree, finished 2 years and I got to the point where I wasn't enjoying anything except math and programming subjects. So I quit and enrolled to CS where I am now. I got really solid background during EE studies, and when I got to CS I was feeling pretty at home with it. And I do not know what to expect with math in terms of Machine Learning, Deep Learning or Neural Networks. It looks to me like a lot of linear algebra and analysis.
- What would be bigger concern to me is how much of engineering you actually do with Ai? What I liked with OSs is that it felt pretty rad to me in terms of type of work you do. Plus you could easily get interested in DevOps or Distributed Systems, and those doors would be open too. With Ai it looks like piping and manipulating data from one "thing" to another. I won't include myself in those 5% of Computer Scientists that design Algorithms and software that is used to realize all that stuff that you import in few modules and functions in your project.
Thank you on your time, I appreciate any help or advice..
,Ask HN: Ideas for Building Critical Mass for Taxi Sharing AppHi HN - I'm working on a side project (also writing a paper on it for class) to help users share taxi rides to save money/time. It lets users enter their trip information ahead of time and matches users with others who have similar trips (they can also chat and see each other on the map to help find each other). It is a mobile app (iOS now, more later) with app engine on the backend.
Of course, the utility of such an app is highly dependent on the number of users using it (a common problem in web businesses).
I have a shortlist of ideas to help build this critical mass but would love some feedback/ideas from HN users.
1) Look for high travel density areas (high number of taxi departures) and market specifically there. Some examples would be getting airports, hotels, campuses, etc to help market the app (value for them is it reduces congestion is a useful service for their customers).
2) Partner with environmental groups or student clubs to get small armies to market directly to users (goto airport taxi stand lines helping to match users and asking them to get the app)
3) Since this app is about saving users money, one way to encourage usage is to simulate this benefit until there is a critical mass of users. The idea here would be that if you tell us about your trip at least 24 hours in advance and we can't find you a match then we will credit your account with $X. Once you reach $Y, we send you a coupon for a free taxi ride. THis obviously has the potential to be very expensive and a target for abuse so both would have to be mitigated.
4) Viral distribution - push a users trips to their social network to match them with friends with similar trips. While an obvious feature, it doesn't seem likely to work as this probably already happens informally and you need a large number of users to actually find a match.
5) One potential way to monetize this app is to charge a lead gen fee to cab/limo companies. However, we could pass value onto end consumers as a discount on their ride. The idea would be that if you use the app to find a match and book a cab with us, you get a discounted fair (because we sell the lead to a cab company in exchange for you getting a lower fare).
I realize these aren't necessarily scalable marketing ideas, but they do have the benefit of being localized to specific geo areas. This is important as you'd rather have your users in concentrated clusters to improve matching.
I'm not as concerned with monetizing the app (I built it because I want to use it), but ideas here are welcome.
Also, I have a prototype built. If there is interest I can record a screencast demo if anyone wants to see it....
