What's up with Famo.us' logo and Phinergy electric car's logo?I just read this news today about the electric car
http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/electric-car-with-massive-range-in-demo-by-phinergy-alcoa-1.2664653
Something odd came out of the video. Their logo is almost the same as Famo.us logo. Check it out:

,Ask HN: How Do You Market A Hotel Comparison Website?Any Ideas how you can drive the right traffic to your site without it coming over as spam.
I know the site isn't perfect I am still getting some things sorted. Like the cars and flights and some other shit.
I am saving up money to get the logo re-done.
I used a free 50 google adwords voucher and all google did was put it on pages which weren't relevant. When I questioned it with them, they rang me and said the pages where relevant, which is bullshit.
Here is an example.
Most of my clicks where from http://tvmao.com/
Which was a Chinese site I don't mind the Chinese since it is a growing economy. But there 195 clicks didn't even appear in google analytics. So that wiped 5.80 of my budget.
Here is another example.
gamesandapps.com was 66 clicks which cost me 2.59 of my budget. I don't even know where the site display's it's ads.
So since the display ads wiped out 4/5 of my budget and 90 Percent weren't relevant I think I will stick to search in future which isn't on default so lession learnt, so watch out newbies to the wonderful world of Google AdWords.
Any other sites, which work, to market your site?
My site is www.cutpricedhotels.com.
,Ask HN: Should we have an explicit 'Home' link in our site's nav?Or is the logo enough?
We're redesigning the results page for www.autotempest.com to turn it into more of a one-page web app (ie kayak.com for cars). The 'app page' will have a different layout and a similar but different style from the homepage and rest of the site. I'm wondering whether it needs a clear "Home" link in its navigation, or if a sufficient percentage of users are likely to understand that clicking on the logo takes you to the homepage..
,The Secret Meaning Behind Cardano's Name and Logo,How we fed ourselves for a year & sold a startup...with only 300 lines of codeHello Hacker News,
I’ve been reading HN for a long time now and love the way the community shares thoughts with each other. I haven’t done anything extraordinary or extremely successful, but I want to chip in to the community with this experience that I find pretty interesting.
A year ago, I moved to San Francisco from rural Missouri hoping to join the start-up world. At the same time, I met a friend, Zac, who also just moved to the bay area around that time but had left his job to pursue something more interesting. We decided to become partners and start hacking stuff together.
Since we were new to the city and we didn’t know any one, we decided to build a mobile app that lets people use their phone to read the profiles of others nearby. It was supposed to help people “break the ice” and meet new people. This was our first startup. We coded the product in a week and pushed the product live.
Once live, we got like 5 users, since no one really knew about it. To promote this product, we decided to target events, since we thought that events is where people would like to meet each other. We locked ourselves in a room and asked this question over and over: “What is something valuable we can provide to event organizers so that they can promote our product?”
Zac finally came up with an idea. He proposed that we could build a kiosk where attendees can type in their name, and a name badge would instantly print. Then the attendees would be integrated into our mobile app as well. At first, it sounded insanely dumb (what would my mom think if I told her that I moved 2000 miles away from home to print paper name badges?), and I laughed really hard. But after thinking about it, it seemed “cool”, and we gave it a try.
In a day of work, we wrote the software in 300 lines of code and tested it. We ordered a label printer from Dymo and hooked them up to a Dell Mini 10v netbook. After that was done, we contacted an event organizer, convinced him that our system wasn’t going to fail, and asked if we could print name badges for him.
The event organizer let us try out our system, and that night turned out to be amazing. People thought it was the coolest thing ever to type their name in a laptop and instantly have a name badge print out. At the end of the night, we handed out lots of cards and got lots of people to try our mobile app. It was the first time in my life that there was “buzz” around something I created.
We continued to hit events and print name badges. We bought more printers and lots and lots of labels. We bought a huge travel suitcase to hold everything, and we carried it everywhere to print name badges for events.
The experience was amazing. Not only did we get a lot of people to try our mobile app, but all the attendees thought it was the “coolest” gadget ever. I guess we essentially “engineered” our way into these $600 technology events for free. Many event organizers gave us the front-seats sponsor booth, without charging us a dollar. Some gave us free advertising banners at their events. Most importantly, everyone walked around with our logo on their shirt. We shook all their hands as they walked into the door. Advertising can’t get any better than that. We quickly got our mobile app into the hands of our users, and talked to more than 500+ directly.
Unfortunately, after a month passed, we realized that our initial mobile app wasn’t working. People didn’t want the product. They didn’t want to read profiles about people around them. The mobile app wasn’t useful.
Here’s the weird thing about start-ups: things just happen. Although our mobile app failed miserably, our little name badge printing system became insanely popular. Event organizers were begging us to print badges for them every time they had an event. They were referring us to their friends, and we were hitting events literally every day with our name badge printer. To cater for each event, we forked our original software (which was completely hard coded and not well thought through) way too many times.
Just to name a few, we hit: TechCrunch events, Smash Summit, SF Music Tech, Future/Money Tech, ISA, Twitter events, FailCon/FailChat, TEDxSoma. You can see some pictures here: http://imhello.posterous.com/ .
Eventually, we got so many requests that we couldn’t go to all the events anymore. It was too much for us to handle. That’s when it finally hit us right on the forehead. This is what it’s like to build a product someone wants. Event organizers wanted to use our system. They’ll email you, call you, beg you, and tell their friends about you.
Since we were too overbooked, we decided to charge and up our product. We added EventBrite integration, customization, and polished it up a little. For every event, we would make around $50-$300 dollars (depending on the size and labor).
Soon, this little name badge printing software was now able to support me and my partner’s living expenses. And in the end, we sold the product to a small company. Although it was not an amazing multi-million dollar acquisition, it was an acquisition that gave us enough money to start another company.
The lesson we learned is that something so tiny as a “name badge printing machine” may seem silly and pointless at first, but it led to opportunities you can’t first predict. In our case, it fed us and turned into a small acquisition. We made lots of friends and great people while we were attending these events. Even our $10 Logitech keyboard was touched by many great CEOs and celebrities who came through us to get their name badges. We got completely free promotion and direct advertising.
I think that every startup has opportunities where they can be creative. Every startup can build something on the side and attach it to their product somehow. My advice is that if you find something “cool”, even if it’s small or trivial at first, take it for a spin before dropping it in the trash can. It might just spin into something that can help in the future.
After selling the name badge printing software, we decided to go back and pivot on our initial mobile app. Our new company is called View. View is a mobile app that “tells you what you need to know, wherever you are.” We’re really excited about this app because it’s very useful to our daily life.
We’re about to launch beta very soon. If you’d like to try it, go to http://view.io
Make sure you click the link above instead of typing it through the browser, so we can know you were referred from Hacker News and can give priority access.
Thanks for reading my story!
Felix
P.S. View is not in the App Store yet, but if you’d like to try the iPhone app as a beta tester, shoot me an email and tell me your city/state in the subject line: felix@view.io. We only have a limited number of invitations left, so I can’t guarantee that everyone can try it..
,Offer HN: I'll make a decal for your startup.I make vinyl decals. It's not a business - I do it for fun. It's extremely satisfying to see an idea come to life so quickly, and the labor itself is somewhat therapeutic. I genuinely enjoy the creative process involved with making vinyl decals, and I sure could use a break from these brain-busting college courses. If there could only be one community I would give back to, this would definitely be the one.
So here's my offer: You have a startup. I make decals. I will make a vinyl decal for your startup - for free. You can stick it on your office window to appear more legitimate or slap it on the back of your car for advertising. I really don't care what you do with it, as long as it is your company's logo and/or website. These decals will be 'die-cut' style, meaning there is no background or border. Here are some examples for clarification:
http://www.lorenburton.com/decals.jpg
No trademarked logos (unless you own the trademark). To keep things simple, let's do matte black or matte white only, maximum size 5'x8', and no crazy intricate designs. Single color logo/text (see examples).
Final thought: not sure how to handle shipping. Obviously there would be shipping costs incurred, but I don't feel comfortable charing HN for shipping. Any thoughts on how to handle this?
If your interested in a decal for your startup, send me an email at lorendburton (at) gmail.com, with .ai or .eps file attached. Please specify size and color.
Let's have fun with this! I'm interested to see how this idea is received, considering most 'Offer HN' threads have been in regards to services. I am not looking for any personal gain here, unless you consider having fun and bringing ideas to life to be personal gain..
,Ask HN: Are there hourly paying jobs for pregnant women?Hi I am a web/graphic designer who has worked on over 50+ projects involving web, logo, video, and any graphic item. I am quick to execute a project and can pick up stuff easily.
I had a good 3 year run and I was getting regular business from a guy from Asia. Unfortunately he is not responding from the past few weeks and I am totally out of work.
Can you help me find work? I can only work hourly and from home since I am pregnant and have to take care of an ailing family member at the same time. I did try finding work at a web shop but they were not so accommodating when they heard I was pregnant. I am sure they have their own reasons so I am not complaining.
It's best if I receive an hourly payment as I am really short on payments with a rent due this week and a couple of other bills to pay off. I can execute anything design related and which can be done using Adobe.
Please help me if you can. Someone said I can get work if I accept Bitcoin. So I started an account at 15tLDG1PvV1ux2r4wdtmDDNg2BvFfbL9gR . Not sure if this is how it works but I just want to work and get paid soon. I can do any online IT job if there are no design jobs available.
Thanks good folks of HN!.
,Ask HN: Need freelance front-end work to pay college loans while I job-huntHi HN,
I'm a recent CS graduate and several year HN member currently looking for a job at a startup, but it's slow going. My college loans are eating up my savings, and I would love to be able to do some freelance work to help cover those and improve my skills and experience.
I have no problem with very small or one-off projects. If something is worth $10 or $20 for you not to mess with, shoot me an email.
Pricing: For HN members, cheap, and payable on satisfactory delivery. Seriously, you send me a project and a price, and it will probably work for me.
Contact: brianfarr@gmail.com
Here are some services I can offer:
* Convert a design to markup: Got a great Photoshop design or other image and need it converted to clean, valid, and semantic markup? Let me do that while you work on your product.
* Customized a purchased theme: You found that great design on ThemeForest but you need to make some changes and incorporate your logo and branding? No problem. Armed with a text editor and Firebug, I can get this done quickly.
* Basic CMS or Wordpress Theme: Want a basic theme from your design or markup so you can use a content management system and update quickly? No problem. We're not talking about creating an Engadget style superblog or infinitely customizable theme here, just your design and the ability to use an edit box to update your site.
* Fix small problems on web pages: Got some tweaks, bug fixes, and cross browser problems you've been meaning to take care of? Let me wear out the refresh button and fix them for you. I have plenty of HTML, CSS, and scripting experience to figure out what's going wrong and how to correct it.
* Website proofing and reviewing: Get a fresh set of eyes on your marketing and copy, get help distilling your message.
* Web application testing: You're probably getting tired of using it and you're totally acclimated to it anyways. Have someone else try it out, see if anything breaks, give usability feedback, etc.
* Something crazy you just thought of: I have lots of other skills too, so let me know!
Thanks for reading, and don't hesitate to email me ( brianfarr@gmail.com ) with any questions!.
,Ask HN: Book bomb for a Software Development Manager joining your companyAllow me to first set the context. The question is at the end.
On your first day on a new job, you receive a bouquet of goodies. Some of these are essential for you to perform your job (laptop, headphones, mouse, etc.) and the rest are "feel good" things (water bottle, t-shirt, a notebook, a pen, etc. with the company logo on them). I guess the idea is to make your first day memorable, and perhaps down the road, even remind you of this day. I often use a sweatshirt I received from my then employer some 8 years ago, and it still makes me smile to think of my days at that company.
Some companies give books to their prospective new employees (the famous book bomb at Amazon) to help them learn or brush up on a few skills they will need on the job. Employers who do this convey that they care about their people's intellectual growth. What follows is a list of three books that I think would be a good addition to your welcome kit for the new Software Development Managers joining your team.
First is [The Manager's Path][1], which can be a career guide for software developers who have chosen the path of management. The best thing about this book is that it is valuable no matter how far ahead you are on this path. Encouraging your new employees to start thinking in terms of their career ladder and growth path can be a strong motivator.
Second on this list is [Working Backwards: Insights, Stories, and Secrets from Inside Amazon][2]. This book distills the knowledge of ways of working that make Amazon successful. Applying even a few of these methods to your work, even if it is only at a personal level, will produce better outcomes for you.
The third is [Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future][3]. The best part of this book is that it encourages business owners to solve problems by applying thinking that starts with first principles. It also teaches you to ask the questions that lead you to find value in unexpected places.
Question: What would you change or add to this list of books for new Software Development Managers joining your company/team? Why?

,Need advice: How to help my co-founder get her energy and confidence back?My co-founder and I have been working on a bootstrapping project for 4 months. We aren't rushed and can still go without revenue for about a year.
The problem is that she does barely anything for the project. Yes, I could make a 5-item list of the things she's actually done: designed a logo, made a few design mockups she never completed, researched influencers we'll contact later to get the word out... Yet in the meantime I've built an entire mobile web app, and took care of a lot of the design and marketing copy that she was supposed to handle.
We are close friends, and I've seen her accomplish a lot in other areas. I asked her many times if she really enjoyed the project and her role in it, if she wanted to work on other aspects of the project or just give up and do something else. It wouldn't ruin our friendship. She is adamant that she does love the project, and she thinks that she can't work because she's too afraid of failing. It's a difficult project in an area where she has little experience, and it freezes her. We've talked about the issue a lot, both doing some introspection and trying to understand how to make it work, but so far the situation hasn't changed.
I am desperately looking for advice. Is her situation common? Should I just give up and stop here? Is there a specific way that I should handle her which would give her the confidence that she needs? I know, she's my friend, so I should know best, but none of my approaches worked and I'm desperate..
,Ask HN: Which design rights are enforceable in the United States?Hey guys,
I created a puzzle game as a side project a few years back. It's similar to a Rubik's Cube, but in 2D instead of 3D. Here's the Google Play listing:
http://goo.gl/o7X6I
An identical listing also appears in Amazon's and Barnes and Noble's stores. Yesterday, I received a takedown notice from Amazon that advised me to contact Rubik's Cube's security team. Their representative sent me this note:
> (Y)our images of the cube is infringing our designrights. Please see attached certificate. You will have to change the design of your cube or get a license from Rubik's Cube.
> Attachment: http://goo.gl/08Cq6
I'm based in the US and they are based in Sweden. My understanding of US IP law is that puzzle design is not protectable, and I was very careful not to call my puzzle a Rubik's Cube in its description. I don't know what the rules are in Europe.
The name, design, and logo of Cognicube are distinctively mine. I don't believe the concept of sliding colored bricks to solve a puzzle is protectable in the US.
The only thing I can see in their application that is even remotely similar to Cognicube is their logo. It's is an isometric projection of a Rubik's Cube from the corner. In the tablet version of Cognicube, there's a view that shows all six faces of the cube displayed in quasi-3D. It's not my logo, and it's drawn from a different angle than the image in their trademark. (It also has six faces instead of three.)
Compare:
- Their logo: http://goo.gl/oZd0C
- My screenshot: http://goo.gl/3Stve
I know that Hacker News is not an outlet for legal advice, but I imagine you guys may have run into similar issues before. Are EU design rights enforcable in the US? Do you see anything I've done that infringes their rights in the US?
I've only made a couple hundred dollars over the last few years on this project, so it might not be worth contesting, but if I'm actually infringing something, I'd like to know for next time. =)
Thanks!.
,SoCal Startups: I Want to put your logo on my business cards. No strings.Im ordering my business cards for The Startup Cafe and I want to put your startups logo and URL on the back.
How do you get in on this? Simple:
Do you have a Web, open-source, or mobile startup or event located somewhere in SoCal?
Does it have a logo?
Can you design the back of a business card using this template and these guidelines?
Can you upload that design to Flickr and tag it with tscMoo?
Awesome, youve made the cut. Im getting 100 cards printed so get your logo in. First come first served..
,ASK HN: I encountered an online scam operation. What can I do?A family member got sent a link in this format
https://bazaraki.to-dispatch.ink/83923676746
and they were asking them to do some payment verification to receive a payment. They usually target victims that are selling on Facebook, Ebay and other websites. They then craft a specific website for your item and pretend to have paid and send you a link to collect the payment. Because you are a "first time user" they have a specific verification page that you need to input your card details.
For example if you sell a piano on hackernews, they then make a website called
hackernews.3ds-order.online/123123
123123 is the unique identifier of the piano, with a correct image, and on the top left they will also put the logo of HN. To sell the fake page even more.
I did some reverse lookups on their webapp IP (185.106.93.21) and I got more than 40 pages with scammy names.
Examples:
3ds-order.online, payl.online, processing.tel, qhdns.net, rentcars.store, toptyler.com, transferz.online, deal-express.icu, dealy.ink, fast-deal.live
NS servers:
ns1.qhdns.net, ns2.qhdns.net
I contacted some registrars like NameCheap, but they say I don't have enough evidence. I have screenshots similar to this other person that also blogged about this scam [1]
So my question to HN is, what do we do in such cases?

,How do you think of Google SnoopaVision (previous 360 cam video)?Google lies, as always. Do not get fooled.
Google had provided 360 videos since last summer 2015. But seemingly that was not as expected. Yesterday, I watched a single YouTube video and I found there was an icon on the down right side of the video player, which is called Snoopa. Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXjLhFUruzA
And I clicked it, it said "SnoopaVision is in beta, you can watch this video in SnoopaVision mode after 10/25/2016. " If you scope the logo of "SnoopaVision", you would see it's a head of black man. And in the introduction of video of "SnoopaVision" --- https://www.youtube.com/snoopavision?v=mXjLhFUruzA , you can see all the time this black man (a popular singer, or less? ) is "busy" working in Google as an Architect.
(lie 1): But if you watch this video at 00:45, you would find the SnoopaDogg was trying to code like a stupid psycho on a computer in Google. I know people don't code like that in Google, please don't fool us! Show respects to coders, please.
(lie 2): At 00:50, the Snoopa wrote 'dgg' on a board. And seemingly other calculus formulas were all under the shadow of this Architect. Or Snoopa wrote these formulas in Google. Show respects to scholars, please. Or people in Google don't care.
Response: Google was trying to let popular people get involved and brand their 360cam video products. But in the video Snoopa himself looks like a drug-addict, who would say some argot, dirty words even guns pointing at his head. The image was very violent, nasty, low self-esteem, full of weed. By the way, the icon "Snoopa" may make you feel itching. Can't Google have a more flatten icon/symbol for this. Please don't put this heroism for branding your products in 360cam video industry. Or try someone with greater public image. We don't want to be treated as fools as you think we are.
How do you think, guys?.
,Cartoon animal logosi am trying to think of a logo... and it seems like lots of sites have animals for logos...

,BMW reveals the origin of its logo in video form,Ask HN: Fraudulent Google DMCA takedowns – What to do?Hi HN,
We’re a startup and have recently been victim of a series of repeated fraudulent DMCA takedown requests filed with Google against our website, a popular regional/niche (Persian) media platform called arzdigital.com which is very dear to us.
https://transparencyreport.google.com/copyright/domains/arzd...
Each time this happens, lots of our website links are delisted (currently 45 Urls) from Google and hobbles our business. Despite DMCA notifications being sworn statements filed under penalty of perjury, the reporter is making an entirely baseless/false claim using a (presumable) fake name, disposable email, and VPN, so while submitting them is a crime, our website is still delisted. (They’re claiming copyright over our logo, which is completely bogus.) This amounts to a legally-specified denial-of-service, as I understand Google has limited discretion in how they respond to properly formatted DMCA takedown requests.
We are heavily dependent on Google inbound traffic and we generally receive ~750,000 uniques from Google to our website each day which, while we are delisted, We have lost ~250,000 uniques so far. We’re a media platform so without traffic, we’re toast.
We are very concerned that we will lose our rankings and perhaps our entire business (we are small but still we employ over a hundred people) if we can’t figure out a way to stop this from happening.
We already have submitted a DMCA counternotification, however it will take 10-14 days until we are reinstated. Meanwhile, the attacker has recently submitted a second fraudulent takedown notice for another 167 Urls (presumably in response). We are very afraid that this issue will keep us largely deindexed and perhaps entirely destroy our startup that we have worked so hard to build from scratch over the last four years.
Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a person or team inside of Google that cares about this sort of thing? I assume this attack doesn’t work against facebook.com; what is a little guy to do? Is there US-based law enforcement that gets involved when there is such blatant criminal activity? What should we do?
Thanks,
James, Seyedi, and Shabani

,Ask HN: Where can I get cheap die cut business cards? So time and again I decide that I need business cards for something (myself, a business, a friend asks me where to get them).
Most of the time, I use Vista Print. It's standard, cheap, and gets the job done for most run of the mill needs.
Currently, I have a vector based logo that I would like to have cut out of each business card, showing that negative space. I've been searching around for a place that will make these business cards, but I haven't found a printer that will do it, let alone a place that will do it cheaply.
Has anyone had business cards made like this? And if so, where and how much?.
,Ask HN: Journalists, what do you want from story requests?Hey HN, I'm planning a software product in the press space, and I'd like to know what you'd want from someone requesting that you write an article about their startup.
Here's what I've got from some brainstorming and asking around my personal network:
- Startup name
- Hi-res logo
- Screenshots/photos of the product
- Description of the product/service
- History (founders' names, previous startups they've done, investors/accelerators if any)
- Quid pro quo (money, free swag/product/service, etc)
Please let me know if I missed anything, or if there's anything on this list that you don't care about.
I'd love to hear from journalists, OR anyone who's had success generating PR for their startup.
Thanks HN!.
,Ask HN: What are your experiences with contact-less payment? With the increase of contact-less payment in the UK, Im finding that increasingly often when paying by contact-less card that the person at the till takes the card out of my hand and places it on the contact-less reader for me. Surely this removes all security of contact-less payment?
In summary the process works as follows:
1. Youre issued with a contactless compatible card which features a logo similar to the Wi-Fi logo on the card: http://productreviewsuk.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/barclayscard.jpg
2. The contactless compatible reader prompts you with a price, green light and if the purchase is less than 15 asks you to present your card for contact-less, else insert it as usual and use your PIN
3. You hold the card on the reader, wait for all the green lights to fill and then wait for an approved message
4. Leave with your shiny new item (or in my case lunch!)
Heres a YouTube video showing how it works if you havent had a chance to use contactless http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBQjxY-3_uU&feature=player_detailpage#t=34s
I know how to use these readers, I actually think its very clear and easy to use. Ill wait for the prompt, check the price and then present the card for payment. However, as mentioned in my introduction, the person at the checkout keeps on taking the card from my hand and placing it on the reader, meaning I dont have a chance to confirm the price, I could be paying up to 15 without my direct consent.
The problem however is that this is becoming the social norm, and when I've mentioned Id prefer not to handover my card to the cashier I've been made to feel like Im being deliberately awkward or taking control for the sake of it!
What do you think? Have you experienced the same thing? Is there anything that could be done to fix this? Should cashiers be given extra training and guidelines on specifically not doing this?.
