hey what's up guys my name is Enzo and, today I'm going to be showing you how to, create a professional looking logo for, your YouTube channel, now you can also apply this method to, any other social media site like, Instagram or Twitter but for this video, I will be focusing on making a logo for, a YouTube for today's tutorial I will be, using Pixlr a 100% free browser software, that you can use as well in my opinion, is just one of the best editing, platforms out there and I've been using, it for a very long time they recently, updated the interface making it even, easier to edit images so this really is, the best time to be making a new logo, for your channel so to begin with you're, going to want to go to pixlr.com and, click on advanced Pixlr e for the free, version after that click on create new, and now you're going to want to choose, the dimensions of your image um you're, always going to want to go with 800 by, 800 pixels because generally for most, social media websites this is just the, default, dimensions that you want your image to, be we're gonna want to turn the, background off so that we have a, transparent image click on create and, there you go alright so when creating, your logo you want to decide what type, of logo you want a lot of people, including myself have the starting, letter of our channel names centered in, the middle of the image with some, effects which in my opinion is the, easiest to make and the best-looking one, so we're going to be covering how to do, that in this video so first things first, you need to find a font that suits your, channel go to the fonts calm which is, generally the website you go to to gets, different kinds of fonts and I, personally like the modern category so, I'm just gonna click on that you can, click on any of the other ones if you, want, and for this video I'm just gonna choose, vampire wars download the font drag it, to your desktop and extract the files, after downloading the font you can add, your text select the text tool click on, the middle and click add new text layer, now I'm just gonna use um the letter R, as a test letter but of course you can, use whatever you want depending on what, your channel name is click on add local, fonts in order to add the font you just, downloaded the font will appear at the, top select it and there you go, increase the size of your letter to, around 500 position it in the center of, your image now depending on the font, even though it's centered in the middle, it seems to be further rights than left, of course this depends on the font you, downloaded but if it looks like this, Center it manually when increasing the, image size of your font make sure that, it is not too big YouTube crops out a, good bits of your image when you upload, it to your channel meaning if you make, the letter too big parts of it may be, cropped out in the process now a trap, that a lot of youtubers fall into is, making their channel logo too detailed, you really do not want an overly, detailed logo since most of the time it, only takes up a very small area on your, screen for my channel I left the letter, completely white in order to keep a, clean look if you want to go with this, style just keep the letter like this but, since I want to give you multiple, options on how to create your logo I'm, also going to show you an overlay method, in order to apply this method go to, google and search for texture in my case, I'm going to search for a blue texture, after finding an image that you think, would fit your logo download it in order, to import the texture you just download, it into Pixlr simply drag it in click on, add currents and there you go you're, going to want to resize the image so, that it covers the entire letter, [Music], if you want you can rotate the image so, that you get a diagonal texture on to, your logo in order to apply the texture, to your letter make sure that the, texture is one layer above your letter, select your letter click on the magic, wand tool and click in the center of the, image this will select your letter, right-click it and select invert, selection to select the outer parts go, to your texture and click delete on your, keyboard now you have a texturized, letter if you zoom into the image you, can see a white outline to get rid of, this simply delete your text perfect now, we need a background image you don't, want us to be too detailed keep it, simple it should also be a different, color for me a letter since you don't, want it to blend in I'm simply going to, search for a galaxy background, when you find the image you want again, save the file and drag it into your, image click on add currents and here we, are, make sure your background is below your, text also you can delete this third, layer now that we have the background, imported we can add some effects select, your background click on adjustment and, click on hue and saturation here you can, adjust the color the saturation and the, brightness of your background image, before changing the hue and saturation, click on colorize then change them to, suit your logo personally I'm going to, turn the saturation up a little bit, and change the hue to a darker color, [Music], I think this looks pretty good so I'll, hit apply now let's change the text, click on filter and click on drop shadow, you can change the settings to your, likings, I think these settings look good so I'll, hit apply another great effect under, filter is outline simply change the size, and opacity to your likings personally I, would go for a black color as you can, see the effect also extends to the sides, we'll fix that in a second in order to, fix that click on your texture click on, your lasso tool and select the place, where the extension is happening click, on delete on your keyboard and it will, delete the effects one more effect that, I would suggest adding is a blur around, the sides, [Music], click on filter details blur and set the, amount to a hundred percent now we're, done with our logo click on file save, image make sure it's a jpg file and set, the quality to 100% give it a name and, click download awesome we Note: this is not free internet access. The best technical description is free-to-air satellite IP multicast. Unlike commercial datacasting providers, our broadcast stream can be decoded by consumer-grade tuners and receivers. We are currently using a $40 Linux-friendly DVB-S tuner, Raspberry Pi, and $8 wifi dongle. Of course, a Ku-band dish and LNB are also needed, but these two pieces are locally available for $50 in basically every corner of the globe.

Our next project is to interface the DVB-S tuner directly with any hackable wifi router. Eventually, we hope to release a tuner/wifi router for less than $50..

,Failure to launch US phone Covid-tracking apps?What's going on with phone based covid-tracking apps? Apple & Google
have widely released bluetooth based tracking capabilities that need an app to leverage them, and in the US these seem to be state based. The US has a disgraceful national failure to have a countrywide plan for most cv19 issues. The Google & Apple strategy we have seems to be that each state makes their own app leveraging the infrastructure. My state (Washington) doesn't have an app as of now.

Only a few states have released them. Washington State people have been working on an app for a while; commoncircle.us seems to be their website, they have a github site that hasn't had a checkin for a couple of months. Is this effort dead? Their twitter account has nothing since July. Why isn't there an app available or any discussion?

Firstly, we got some really helpful critical advice. Thank you all.

Secondly and maybe more importantly are the effects of the logo change on the site. Originally I had no logo on the web app, wanting to restrict the app to the bare essentials and ideally no images at all, also limiting the features / text concentrating on just one core concept. (This is a sort of design challenge I wanted to experiment with.)

Eventually I relented and added a few images inc a logo which was really cheap looking. After lots of complaints, we put a day into creating a new logo, then put up some roughs here for critique, then took on board much of the advice and added the new logo.

The app is scaling quite fast and enjoys decent organic traffic, however a high percentage would bounce straight off, looking at only the landing page. Since the new logo, the stats are very interesting, there is not one hit where they just look at one page and leave, all traffic now spending considerable more time on the site.

I guess this will appear to obvious to some but still it has surprised me and been an interesting eye opener as to the effects of eye candy.

,Ask HN: Serving Vector Images Via Web API?So, sometimes I need many different sizes of the same vector image on a site (i.e. logo). But saving multiple versions for web from Photoshop is a pain in the ass--especially when a year later you need to change the size of the logo and have to go find the PSD again.

How about keeping vector images in a folder somewhere on a webserver in EPS format or the like, and then providing an API that would let you specify the size and image format in the URL, like so:

example.com/vectors/logo.png?width=100

You could set up caching and then everything would be dandy--just change the URL to get a different size. I think this would be great for icons, logos, etc.

I found something similar (http://imageresizing.net/) that requires running a .NET server, but I was wondering if there were other tools out there that did something like this? I've seen approaches that scale an existing raster image, but I like the vector solution better, especially if a pixel-fitting algorithm could be applied (see http://dcurt.is/pixel-fitting). I also tend not to like the results from image-resizing algorithms at smaller sizes..

I've been a regular reader, and very occasional poster, on HN for nigh on ten years now.

I always loved PG's iconoclastic/idiosyncratic "brutalist" aesthetic, but the UI GIFs have felt obsolete since I got a smartphone. I remember the up/down voting arrows started looking blurry on my iPhone 3G, and then sometime later they got better on mobile with the introduction of the higher-res "grayarrow2x.gif".

Now on a retina display, by now I just take the blurry arrows (and YC icon) for granted. I was building an HTML table with column sorting today, and made use of Unicode characters ▲▼ "BLACK UP-POINTING TRIANGLE" (▲) and "BLACK DOWN-POINTING TRIANGLE" (▼). How about swapping out grayarrow2x.gif for these text arrows? I just tried the substitution via Chrome dev tools, and it was a trivial change and looks crisper to me. I'm not aware of any compatibility/support issues with these Unicode chars, but maybe some technical reason not to make this change...

These might seem like niggling issues, but unlike other seemingly low-hanging UI improvements (e.g. increasing font size, which looks kinda tough with how the CSS is structured), I think both of these changes could be made in just a few minutes, and I'd appreciate it on every upvote!.

I've been working on a command line tool for more than 6 months.

A member on Github changed the name of the project, reduced the number of features by removing 3rd-party libraries (all of them are optional in my CLI), and took the entire idea including modularity, plugins and even the mac logo () on the title of the project.

He should have created Pull Requests to contribute to the project instead of modifying the original project and posting it as a separate project in 4 days (vs 6 months that it took to me to organize and create all that code).

100% of the changes he made could have been made through Pull Requests.

,Ask HN: Please re-review my webapp: PlaylistrThe last version seemed to be fairly well-received, but it wasn't satisfied with it, yet. Since I last posted about it, I've made a few changes. The most obvious would be the interface. I'm not sure if anyone who commented on my previous thread has seen the new interface, but it's much easier on the eyes.

Most of the changes are on the backend, but are ones I'm sure a lot of you would appreciate. I've added a proper admin panel, so adding new streams is a snap. (Feel free to request some!) I've also made the playlists generate with titles, so they won't show up in your media player as a list of ugly IP addresses and hostnames. They also use CRLF now, instead of just LF.

You may also login (link is under the logo) using your Google account and your selections will be saved for you, then restored on your next visit.

I created a puzzle game as a side project a few years back. It's similar to a Rubik's Cube, but in 2D instead of 3D. Here's the Google Play listing:

An identical listing also appears in Amazon's and Barnes and Noble's stores. Yesterday, I received a takedown notice from Amazon that advised me to contact Rubik's Cube's security team. Their representative sent me this note:

I'm based in the US and they are based in Sweden. My understanding of US IP law is that puzzle design is not protectable, and I was very careful not to call my puzzle a Rubik's Cube in its description. I don't know what the rules are in Europe.

The name, design, and logo of Cognicube are distinctively mine. I don't believe the concept of sliding colored bricks to solve a puzzle is protectable in the US.

The only thing I can see in their application that is even remotely similar to Cognicube is their logo. It's is an isometric projection of a Rubik's Cube from the corner. In the tablet version of Cognicube, there's a view that shows all six faces of the cube displayed in quasi-3D. It's not my logo, and it's drawn from a different angle than the image in their trademark. (It also has six faces instead of three.)

I know that Hacker News is not an outlet for legal advice, but I imagine you guys may have run into similar issues before. Are EU design rights enforcable in the US? Do you see anything I've done that infringes their rights in the US?

I've only made a couple hundred dollars over the last few years on this project, so it might not be worth contesting, but if I'm actually infringing something, I'd like to know for next time. =)
